wow, what press release did you get half of your last post from?
Oh my god, clearly neither of you are going to persude each other on this issue. As a fan of both 9 to 5 and Next to Normal, I understand both of you but this is getting childish. Debate it in the Tonys thread if you must.
nexttolectric - you're an absolute fanatic about this. CHILL.
Keely wanted to show up and start dropping negativity and wishing bad things on other shows, i was just showing that if thats what she wants to do, fine, there's plenty of negativity to drop on the marshmallow that in 9 to 5.
nexttolectric - you're an absolute fanatic about this. CHILL.
and you're a bad troll, you're no good at it at all. Which is kinda funny cause you try so hard to troll people.
Ah, yes. That is the mature way to go.
Why do I bother?
And a "troll" is FlyingMonkey... Chip... BwayBabe4... any sock puppet.
I just don't like what you like. That doesn;t make me a troll, buddy.
Honestly, 'troll' and 'sock puppet' don't mean anything. They're words that originally had meanings that got warped and twisted beyond recognition. Like 'hilarious' and 'cool' and 'amazing.' So basically, you can call pretty much anyone a troll or a sock puppet and there's no use arguing against it. Everyone has a different definition anyway. Especially the bona fide socks.
Okay, now this thread is getting upsetting. Let's just celebrate Next to Normal's transfer. It's miraculous. As for Ripley vs. Janney, I haven't seen Janney, so I can't make a fair judgement. Obviously I'm an Alice fan though, and obviously EVERYONE has their Tony favorite--- but let's leave that to another thread, please. This one is for celebration, not argument.

I can't believe people are honestly having Tony arguments about two shows that HAVEN'T EVEN OPENED YET.

This is amazing. They have just made the season more exciting. I will definitely see this. The most interesting thing is I wonder who Alice just bumped out of the best actress category. Wow this just awesome!

I think the fact that NEXT TO NORMAL has been added to the new Broadway openings just makes it a stronger season than we expected and this is very good news. It may also open up the Best New Musical category to include the shows which are not the mega blockbusters like Billy Elliot (I have great admiration for this show as well), but I also think TITLE OF SHOW, THE STORY OF MY LIFE and NEXT TO NORMAL have great value to different audiences and therefore, deserve and may possibly get some equal recognition by The American Theatre Wing as do the huge shows. The more new plays and musicals and revivals that open this season, the richer we are in every way. This economic meltdown is still just beginning so news of more shows opening gives hope to many people who love the theatre and want it to thrive, even and especially during these hard times. I know the Broadway League may be looking at the number of tickets sold as their measure of what deserves a Tony Award, but there are many other voices who see the value of each new play or musical, as well as the revivals, also in need of distinguished recognition.
I totally agree that ticket sales shouldn't dictate who gets nominated but I have to suggest a thought... You say "TITLE OF SHOW, THE STORY OF MY LIFE and NEXT TO NORMAL have great value to different audiences," but I personally think all three of them play to exactly the same audience... the audience of musical theater fans who are already predisposed to like the musical theater experience, and THAT audience is really not "different" especially when it comes to the Tonys. While they may be good shows, I don't see them as shows that bring any new or "different" audience into the theater experience.
I'm telling you right now.
The commitee will not shut SHREK, 9 TO 5, or BILLY out in the cold. The three biggie's are getting spots. I assure you.
That leaves one spot for the smaller artsy show (such as STORY or NEXT..) and that makes perfect sense too.
I could see SHREK not getting a nomination, in the same vein of LEGALLY BLONDE's snub a couple seasons ago, or AIDA's snub several years back.

I think it'd have to be either Foster, Channing or Graham (alt. Grant if she gets thrown into that cat).
Glad to hear it's coming to Broadway though, definitely shakes up the Tonys race this year.

yeah, I think this will make Alice Ripley a Star.
Really you don't think its going to make more folks notice her voice went south about 10 years ago
now there is a reason to wake up in the morning.. haha:)
SOOOO HAPPY
My head just exploded! This just adds to the list of shows I have to see.
"now there is a reason to wake up in the morning.. haha:) "
Really? I assumed there would be other reasons that could maybe come before a show.
- Family
- LIFE
- Career or Education
- Partner (?)
honestly, is the bashing of alice's voice necessary? please!
her acting is infinitely more important in this show than her singing anyway.

I tried not to follow the Arena Stage changes too closely, knowing I'd eventually get to see it staged again and I could go in with less preconceptions.
I am excited.
Personally, I think her voice adds so much emotion to the piece, that say Scott's and Spanger's could not.
