I have a bad feeling they may be considering Kidman for Carla.
I guess you could interpret it that way Jazz - after all the entire thing is in his mind - the way 8 1/2 works - his relationships with Saraghina is just as real as his relationship with Carla. All these women are the great loves of his life -- its all symbolic so time/space isn't that relative.
Its of course arguable whether the movie shoot even exists at all:

That is just one of the many reasons why I think NINE has the potential to make a great adaptation and actually work as a movie musical. As you mentioned in another thread, MB, the less realistic the musical is, the more feasable it is to see it adapted for film.
P.S: I was listening to "Follies Bergeres" a little bit ago, I cannot wait to see what Marshall will do with this number. I hope it's even more stunning than his great vision of "Cell Block Tango" in CHICAGO. I also hope that Montevecci, Shelly Burch, Kathi Moss, or Karen Akers get a cameo. Perhaps one of them can play one of the nuns at Guido's old school.
But the real question is...will the film still be called 9 (NINE)? Technically, if they keep with Fellini's original thought on the film's title - he movie musical should be called "9 1/2."
The musical on stage was titled 9 because the creative team thought by musicalizing 8 1/2 - it was 1/2 of a new project. A film remake/adaptation is probably worth 1/2 more...
Of course people would think it was a musical of 9 1/2 weeks but that might actually boost ticket sales.

About songs being cut..
There's NO WAY they can cut MY HUSBAND MAKES MOVIES, and BE ON YOUR OWN.
But of course it could happen. Marshall loves cutting songs. He cut ME AND MY BABY and MY OWN BEST FRIEND from the Chicago film, which are 2 GREAT songs.
I just can't imagine those 2 Luisa songs being cut. Amazing songs.
My first thought on casting for this was Sophia Loren MUST be in this, so I'm with best12bars for Sophia Loren to play Guido's Mother (and she can/could sing too).
Really? I thought "Me and my Baby" was a horrible song. I do like that they incorporated the music into the movie, though.
MAMB is classic k&E. And it's a showstopping number for Roxie. A dance number Zellweger would probally never be able to handle.
But I still feel cutting MOBF was a true travesty. Both songs were originally in the screenplay, but were obviously cut.
I'm actually more upset that they cut I KNOW A GIRL.
I think Zeta-Jones would have killed in that number.
Zeta Jones would've sounded great on I KNOW A GIRL. But it wouldn't have fit with the Marshall concept though. Same for WHEN VELMA TAKES THE STAND.
MY OWN BEST FRIEND and ME AND MY BABY fit perfectly with the concept of everything in Roxie's head, but sadly Marshall cut them.

I think it could have worked.
If Roxie can imagine Velma trying to impress her in I CAN'T DO IT ALONE, I think she could have noticed Velma's jealousy of her new found fame and envisioned Velma performing that number as a means of stewing in her own envy.
In fact, I think Roxie would have relished a moment like that.
But, that's just me.
I don't like any of the songs that were cut from the movie of CHICAGO. I think Marshall made the right decision.

I'm just pulling for the Overture to be included in some way, even if it's transformed to an instrumental underscoring.
I have such a love for MY OWN BEST FRIEND, I always have. I think it's a THRILLING moment on stage. It perfectly sets up the feud between the two, and the way it leads into the act 1 finale is perfection.
I think another travesty is that there really was no way to fit CLASS in the movie.
My query is why they included MISTER CELLOPHANE. Yes, it's a wonderful number. But, why would that be taking place in Roxie's head?
She never gave him a second thought, even when they were together. Sure, she looks at him as she's being driven away from the courthouse...but I feel she'd be more likely to envision Velma singing I KNOW A GIRL then Amos singing MISTER CELLOPHANE.
They kept in "Cellophane" to have another male perspective in the movie.
LJay- you just love CHICAGO as a piece of musical theatre. Thats fantastic, but all those songs would have slowed the film down. If CHICAGO as a movie had even one more song in it - it would have become exhausting.
I'm sure many songs in NINE will be cut for film. It gets boring watching people lyp sincing to music for 2 hours and 40 minutes.

- Good point. I guess that's why RENT and PHANTOM were so god damn dreadful to sit through.
But I do sincerly believe they tried their hardest to fit CLASS in the movie. It's obvious they REALLY wanted it in the film, but there was no way to make it work. And I'm fine with that. Otherwise I was fine with I KNOW A GIRL, ...VELMA TAKES THE STAND, and especially A LITTLE BIT OF GOOD being cut.
I saw an early screening of CHICAGO with "Class" included in the print - and it wouldn't have mattered if the number were better conceptualized - at that point in the movie, the audience was getting tired of hearing people sing (lipsync). You could feel the tires deflate during that musical number. There is just a disconnect that happens with pre-recorded sound after a while.
We've all talked about this before - but I think there is a reason the most successful movie musicals - WEST SIDE STORY, SOUND OF MUSIC, OLIVER! etc have significantly less singing in the last third of the movie.

Depending on Marshall's vision, you could expect any of the following to be cut: Germans at the Spa (almost a given), Not Since Chaplin, Contini Submits, and even ,yes, Nine. We should expect anything.
Marshall proved to be excellent at making decisions when it comes to cutting songs. While I wish some of my favorite songs had made the final cut ("My Own Best Friend," "When Velma Takes the Stand," "Me and My Baby," "I Know a Girl"), I can see how cutting them made the film more successful and efficient.
Right now I wouldn't mind if "Nine," "The Germans at the Spa," "Getting Tall," and "The Script" were cut. The Grand Canal sequence will inevitably be trimmed or rewritten as dialogue. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if "Bells of St.Sebastian" didn't make the final cut.
I just hope all of Carla's and Luisa's songs stay.
Wow...so interesting to read everyone's interpretations of Luisa, Carla, and Claudia. Here's my two cents:
I agree with all of you about Luisa. Definintely was once something extremely special to Guido, but he's come to take her for granted. Guido figures she's always been there and always will be. He depends on her much more than he'll ever admit.
His relationship with Carla is fueled by passion and physical attraction. However, he sees this as an affair, she sees it as a long term commitment. I think he likes her, but she loves him. She's willing to make changes for them to be together, but Guido will never take this step.
I've always seen Claudia as the one woman who has managed to go on without Guido...and he can't handle that. Yes, at one time they had a relationship, and she still cares for him, but she has moved on. He will always be a part of her life, but he is no longer the center of it. However, Guido thinks that all his ideas come from Claudia. He feels he needs her to create his new movie. I think that often this role is cast too young. After all, they have made at least 4 movies together, so there is definitely history there.

Ok...I think I would have to boycott this film if they cut "Getting Tall". To me, that's the pinnacle of the entire show. That's the moment Guido finally "gets it". I couldn't see getting rid of that number at all....but we all know anything is possible!
As far as "Germans" goes...I say cut it! (And I was a German when I did this show!) The story line is fine without it. "Nine" would provide for some great flashbacks....and potentially the double casting of Guido's mother.....one as the young mother, and one as the older (dead) mother. And again "Bells of St. Sebastian" could end up being a gorgeous on screen numer...but who knows????
I bet there will be an entirely new Grand Canal sequence. That goes on forever in the musical. I'm sure the reprise of "Unusual Way" will be gone along with "Germans" "Nine" "The Bells of St. Sebastian" - I bet other moments will be turned into dialogue and other numbers simply trimmed.
I think its very possible "My Husband Makes Movies" will be ditched or replaced with a new song.

They must mean Judi Dench for Guido's Mother. I adore the woman but a Lilianne she is not. I also like the idea of Sophia Loren as Guido's Mother. How about giving something to Patti Lupone? She'd be great as Stephanie Necrophorous. Not a big part but she'd make it memorable.
I think you're right.
