As I've said repeatedly (and after seeing the film last night, I still think so), I'd love for Hayek to play Carla. She'd be able to bring the immense sexuality of the role to the screen and she would be magnificent in songs like "Simple." Don't think she can sing but I'd love to see her as Carla. However, since she's pregnant she may want to take some time off from the film and might not be back in shape by the time filming starts (though Weinstein said that they wouldn't mind waiting till 2009 to get the stars they wanted).
I also wanted to comment on the fact that I had forgotten how many men populated 8 1/2 (it was Tommy Tune idea to make every single character but Guido a female, an idea that almost made Yeston find a new director). In the original script, I believe Le Fleur was a man, for example. I wonder if Marshall will add Guido's father to the movie or the man dating Gloria (can't remember his name). It'd be interesting to see if there'll be any men apart from Guido and what roles they'll play.
MB, I'm not sure if you were joking about Alley, but that's the kind of actress I'd like to see for the role. I don't think Zeta Jones is matron-ly enough.
MB, that cracks me up.
"I've lost 75 pounds... dancing on the beach with young boys!!!"
EDIT: And wickedfan--Guido is the film director and Lilianne La Fleur is the producer.
I still think Tomei would be a superb choice for Carla.
Or Jenna Elfman for that matter...
No! I'm dead serious about Kirstie Alley. I think she'd be brilliant. I just don't know if she could handle the song.
I could see Tomei as Carla. She could do the blousy sex thing that Sandra Milo does so well in 8 1/2. Reportedly she's not much of a singer though...
Yes! Kirstie Alley sounds perfect.
I'll pass on Tomei, not a fan. Kirstie Alley sounds great indeed and honestly I wouldn't mind seeing a Saraghina who doesn't hit all the right notes, it'd make her more grotesque and earthy. There's a lot of belting in "Be Italian" but I don't think it requires a wide range, does it?
How about we cast, you know, some actual ITALIANS in this.
Not saying that it's necessary. But, in a musical like this that really celebrates Italian culture, it's upsetting to see nothing but Hispanic actors suggested.
There is a bevy of Italian actors and actresses that I would like to see attempt this. It would be nice to see a mix. I, for one, think Tomei would be wonderful.
Well, for what its worth, several of the leads in 8 1/2 weren't Italian...

And Rob Marshall proved how much he worried about cultural ethnicity when he cast Geisha--where to most people it was even obvious the majority weren't Japanese. It doesn't really bug me personally but just saying
As for the post about lip synched movies not doing so well with lotsa lip synched singing in the last 1/4--an interesting theory but one I don't thinK i buy with--what about movies like The Fantastiks where all the singing is done live?
Some of my ideas:
Luisa - Mira Sorvino
Carla - Marissa Tomei, Brittany Murphy
Claudia - (Dare I say...Christina Aguilera?)
Saraghina - Aida Turturro
I like Christina Aguilera. But I HONESTLY think she would have a hard time not riffing and singing from her throat. I'm not sure she would know how to sing a show tune, especially those of Yestons - which borderline opera.
Aguilera has a FABULOUS upper register.
And if they can teach Fantasia to quit the "Yea Yea's" and not be as nasal in THE COLOR PURPLE...I'm more than sure Aguilera can modify her technique for the film.
And she's definitely a knockout.
I just somehow doubt Aguilera can really act...
Or play the ethereal muse and obsession of an Italian film director.
She did a fabulous impression of Samantha from "Sex and the City" on SNL. Not that that really qualifies.
I doubted Fantasia could act but apparently she's doing very well in THE COLOR PURPLE. I doubted Beyonce could act but she did a fine job on DREAMGIRLS.
It's simply an idea. Stranger things have happened.
Well assuming she can act and do comedy - maybe she would work as Carla (if they really wanted to cast the role that young) but I agree with ray - she's really not the mysterious, aloof Claudia...
Nothing against Aguilera, I even think she's the only who can actually sing out of Britney, Simpson, et al. But she's not a NINE woman, IMO. I'd even take Tomei before her.
Mira Sorvino would be an interesting choice though.
Does anyone think Marshall will include men in the film?
He would practically have to men in the movie somewhere. My guess is that the film will have more the structure of something like his CHICAGO, where there is a slightly more realistic European setting and than the "Spa" of his imagination in which he is surrounded by the women.
What do you all think of Sorvino as Luisa? Too young?
And Turturro as Saraghina?
Sorvino is actually a good vocalist. I think she could sing the part. I've always just found her to be a little lifeless. She's definitely not too young...
I think Aida Turturro could be a fabulous Saraghina. That's a great suggestion.
I agree, Aguilera's voice is better for Carla.
