I am sorry to who this offends, but what is happening with "BROADWAY FANS" on this site. To set the record straight, Broadway HAS, in fact, existed for more than this past year. Musicals DO, in fact, exist other than LITTLE SHOP and MILLIE. These aren't even CLOSE to being a "good" musical on my scale. Please Please Please if you are going to post about the BEST something or the BEST something else, Please Please Please some song other than "Defying Gravity". That song is nowhere NEAR being in the same universe as any "good" Broadway song, again, on my scale. I am sick of these 12 year olds who are drowning us ACTUAL "theatre aficionados" in glitter and pubescent hormones. okay, yes, they get to me across the internet. explain that. ugh, please someone say i am not alone...
.
no wait. "No one is alone..."
for you kiddies out there, that was from "Into the Woods", which didnt really exst because you were not alive for it.
sorry.

Posted: 5/22/04 at 3:19pmHee. Yes, it seems that a lot of the posters here don't know about the existence of musicals before Rent, but don't paint everyone with the same brush. There are some really amazing, intelligent, and very articulate posters here who have forgotten more about Broadway than I'm ever likely to know. And if that's not enough for you, go to ATC. :) Updated On: 5/22/04 at 03:19 PM

Posted: 5/22/04 at 3:27pmI really cant stand a lot of you posters! WHO CARES WHAT PEOPLE ENJOY??????? For instance you mentioned "Into the Woods"! I love that show but also love "Wicked"! Just because you dont enjoy new stuff doesnt mean you have the right to belittle those who were not alive when "good" musicals were around! God forbid a new generation likes Bway...its not their fault Bway is turning into American Idol, so dont condem them!!!!!!!

Wow that just seems like a blatant attack on everyone here. Make no mistake, I'm not offended in the slightest.... but I think the thing is we have a lot of young posters and a lot of NEW Broadway fans... it makes sense that they don't know a whole lot before the past few years. I don't think that's any reason to persecute them though.
My 2 cents.

ohhh no. i enjoy new stuff. but i think that some of the people here should look to the past as benchmarks and not deem WICKED the be-all, end-all musical. which it is not. enjoyable, yes.

Posted: 5/22/04 at 3:36pmWas there a point in that? That was a weak attack. Jesus Christ, you don't own people, if people like certain shows and certain songs more than others, than just let it be. Who CARES what 'your scale' is? And don't start targeting '12 year old posters.' I think that if many of them appriciate Broadway, then that can be respected. There is no way to define a 'real' Broadway person. You just seem very stuck up, and irritable. Take a Prozac, and let the matter go.

What if some people actually like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and MILLIE? What is wrong with that? Just because you didn't like them doesnt mean its a bad show. What justifies you to be a real Broadway fan?
#8re: NOT REAL BROADWAY FANS.
Posted: 5/22/04 at 3:45pmI am 16 years old, which would make me a "kid" as you put it. My favorite shows are those hokey musicals from way back when.... Gigi, The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, and last time I checked, none of those were written in the last 16 years. Don't say that those who like all of these new shows are "kids", because many of the people that constantly talk about the new shows are not under the age of 18 or 21 or whatever age you are making this judgement about.

NuggetMonkeys, listen to me. I have been around probably longer than you have. I saw Merman eight times in person. I saw The Lunts in "The Visit" and "The Great Sebastians." I saw Olivier in "The Entertainer," Paul Muni in "Inherit the Wind," Gwen Verdon in "Damn Yankees." I was at the opening nights of "Hello, Dolly!" and "The Odd Couple." I saw John Gielgud and Margaret Leighton AND Katharine Hepburn in different productions of "Much Ado." Okay? Okay?
And you know what? I adored "Millie." And "Hairspray." And "Proof." And I haven't seen "Wicked" or "Avenue Q" yet, but I have this feeling I may like them too. And, yeah, I've heard Menzel sing "Defying Gravity" on Letterman and I pretty much did NOT like it, but so what? That doesn't make me right. Meanwhile, I LOVED Chenoweth singing "Popular" on the Today show. Different strokes for different folks.
Oh, by the way, I thought Reba's performance in "Annie Get Your Gun" was a match for Merman's, and Sutton Foster in Millie blew me away big time. There's always room for more excellence on Broadway.
I'll be singing "Never Say No" from "The Fantasticks" at the Standing Ovations benefit tomorrow night. Will you be there?

Posted: 5/22/04 at 3:48pmI don't condemn either the older posters for having their view OR the younger set for theirs. The bottom line is people have different tastes and many of the younger posters tastes come from the shows they were exposed to Broadway with. Not everyone starts off listening to the classics or what some of the older posters consider the golden age of musicals. And some older posters are so stuck in their golden age of musicals, they can't enjoy the shows of recent days. To each their own.

Posted: 5/22/04 at 3:50pmOn top of rude and obnoxious, your post was also COMPLETLEY stereotypical. And as you can see by some of the posts you've gotten back in reply, many people, both 'kids' and older, disagree with you. I'm fifteen, and I wouldn't consider myself anything like what you described. And thank you very much, CJR.

Posted: 5/22/04 at 3:53pmUmm who said this board was only for "real" broadway fans anyway? It is to talk about broadway...and seeing as how most of these shows are currently playing-it would make sense to discuss them. Don't get me wrong though I get tired of all the Wicked etc. posts also, but again as everyone else has said to each his( or her) own.

I kinda see where NuggetMonkeys is coming from, sort of. For example, why don't we talk about Marissa Jaret Winokur anymore? Why is it that about 1 in 4 threads are about Wicked? Mainly because this board moves with the times and talks about what's happening now as opposed to what's happened. So I can see why people talk about stuff that's happening now, but I don't like it when they forget about people just because they've been off Broadway for six months (eg, Sutton Foster's name doesn't spring into every dream cast anymore, when she was in Millie she did...)
My biggest annoyance with the board, if we're going to be all honest here, is that people seem to be very narrow minded.. eg, Sean Combs is on Broadway? So what? Broadway is about money. Good on whoever decided 'let's put somebody very famous and very controversial into a play'. Yes, we'd all like to see the role to go to some fresh-faced drama graduate, but it just wouldn't work. Theatre is not about that. It is about doing new things.
And also - there is more to life than Broadway musicals. There's a few people here who need to widen their knowledge, perhaps go and see an Ibsen by a small fringe group.
But don't get me wrong - I love this board, honestly. To say it's like a family would be taking it a little too far, but I do feel I've got to know a lot of people on here and I look forward to logging on when I get bored.

Your point about "Into the Woods" is wrong. It was revived in 2002. So, yes, we were alive for it.
I'm 16 and my favorite shows include Wicked, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Little Shop of Horrors, The Music Man, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, Rent, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, etc. So, yes, it is possible for a "kiddie" to like old shows as well as new shows. The reason we talk about Wicked is because it's here and now. Why talk about The Music Man when it closed years ago? There's nothing to be said about it now.

Posted: 5/22/04 at 6:16pmBeing 15 and all, I disagree with you completely. I go to see every show I possibly can, and have seen shows such as Miss Saigon, les Miserables, Assassins, and Caroline, Or Change. And having seen all these, I am probably most appealed by newer shows, such as Hairspray, Wicked, and Avenue Q. People are entitled to their own opinions, and you seem to be tho one who is acting "childish."

In a nutshell ....Nuggetmonkey... it's not what you said as much as how you said it. You unbeknowingly invited a few pies headed your way.
You are asking young people to contribute something they are unable to do. How can a person reflect on 5, 10 or more years of theater exposure at 15-20 yrs. old, which I beleive to be the average age-group here. (correct me if I'm wrong).
Broadway has changed so drastically over the past 15-20 years. And so has it's audience.
For every young guy and gal getting involved in theater, hopefully that's one more adult that will have a broader view of life than those who have tunnel vision when it comes to the Arts. The more hs/college kids dedicated to the Arts, the more performing arts program will be in demand, the more creative talent for the future and so on.
Enthusiam is hard to briddle. Hey! I was sold on The Beatles, now half of them are dead. All in good time for everything! Peace!
