Posted: 5/5/12 at 12:35amBeacon School, a public high school in Manhattan, is putting on reportedly the first 'Spring Awakening' revival in New York City. Kudos to the cast, crew, director/teacher and the school for tackling such topical yet timeless material. Their dedication and enthusiasm for the show is infectious. Anyone else seen other high school productions of 'Spring Awakening'?

Well, they cant do the sex scene, but I can't imagine they'd change anything else. (I mean, why do SA if you need to change everything.)
And on another note: High Schools are begining to perform August: Osage County -- and its pissing people off.

Posted: 5/5/12 at 11:10amThe OP said that it is the first "revival" in NYC...NOT that it was the first high school production of the show...

Posted: 5/5/12 at 2:07pmMy High School in Texas did August, but we changed the pot scene between Jean and Steve to a drinking scene, and most of the language was replaced, for instance, "cooch" became "birth canal",

Oops. Forgot to include a link to the N.Y. Daily News article.
The director told me she believed the Beacon production was the first New York City high school one. Have there been others?
She also mentioned what she hopes her students tackle next season: 'Sunday in the Park With George.'
Have there been many high school productions of that?

Posted: 5/7/12 at 12:14pmReminds me of the "first Off-Broadway revival" of The Fantasticks I saw years ago. Turned out to be an amateur group that rented a tiny space near Times Square for a couple of weeks. There were probably six people in the audience and at most four after intermission though I can't verify that. I believe there were a couple of Equity actors in the production which made me believe AEA had an Amnesty Day and were just passing out memberships at Wal-Mart next to the Pepsi Challenge tasting booth. It was one of the worst productions I've ever seen anywhere in the world. And that's not hyperbole.
