NYTW Artistic Director Stepping Down

NYTW sent out a public announcement via email that James Nicola, artistic director, is stepping down, and will finish his tenure on June 30th, 2022 - so he will have one more full (?) season under his artistic direction.

No word on why he's stepping down, or what direction they will attempt to go with his replacement, but based on the recent discussions in the theatre community, I would think that they're probably going to go in a less "cis white male" direction.

Either way, it seems like big news to me. It's not every day one of the major NYC non-profits gets a new artistic director.

I love a few blocks away, maybe I’ll throw my hat in the ring :)

Agree there is going to be a lot of pressure on the demographics of the replacement

In the Playbill article, he explains "In July of 2022, I will reach the age of 72. In my mind, that has always been the moment to interrupt whatever patterns there might be in my life, and to leap off a cliff into reinvention. So that is my plan. My departure will be over a year from now, as I intend to see NYTW back to welcoming audiences into our theatre and provide the theatre ample time to plan for a smooth transition. I look forward to new adventures and to cheering on the next Artistic Director to create NYTW’s future." https://www.playbill.com/article/new-york-theatre-workshop-artistic-director-james-c-nicola-to-step-down-in-2022

As good a reason as any to step down after 34 years.

So many straight white males to replace him with, so little time...
Listen, I don't take my clothes off for anyone, even if it is "artistic". - JANICE

Don't forget less "old". Honestly, sometimes I feel like one of my identities isn't getting enough (dis)respect here.

I agree that Nicola had a great run. Congratulations to him and the best of luck to his successor.
