I would have to agree with adamgreer. He's not even fond of it AFTER the show. I got lucky the night I saw it and he was in an ok mood. But I have heard some not great stories ~ from more than one person.
Good luck though! :)

Posted: 6/10/08 at 11:01pmIt's actually very rude to try and catch a performer before a show. It's not the appropriate time. Especially for someone who's known not to be so thrilled with the whole stage door scene. I wouldn't if I were you.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 7:58pmI don't know whether this has been asked before but I thought this was the right thead to ask it.. Does anyone know if Laurie Metcalfe is generous at the stagedoor and takes pictures and signs autographs? Just wanted to know whether anyone had heard or actually gone.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 9:04pmWhen I saw November, Laurie Metcalf literally ran away,, yelling that she was late for something. I think yankeefan could back me up on that.

When I met Laurie, we actually talked for five minutes or so, and I asked her for a picture of her self because I looked like crap but she was happy to oblige.
the only one I didn't meet that day was Nathan Lane [ unfortunately

Posted: 6/11/08 at 10:02pm...why is it rude to stagedoor before?
#12re: Nathan Lane Time at Stagedoor
Posted: 6/11/08 at 10:19pmit's rude because the actors are on their way to work and probably do not want to be bothered by people. pretty simple. Of course there are exceptions because some performers are glad to talk and whatnot before the show.

Rude to stagedoor before a show? Please.
They are human beings like me and you. If they can't be polite to you and say they really have to get going, then it is THEM that is rude.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 11:53pmYeah, I agree. Get over it. If someone has the admiration for you to wait to see you before a show, be flattered. Simple as that. As long as they're not a stalker or impeding you from getting on with your business, be polite and grateful.

Posted: 6/12/08 at 12:00amI wonder if some of the responses would change once some posters are old enough to hold a job. Interesting to see if they enjoy being delayed on their way to work.

Well, by stopping them from going in to work, you are impeding them from getting on with their business.

I will agree that performing is an actors job.
This is my issue though, if it were a desk job somewhere no one is going to come up to you and say that report you created changed my life. *ok... MAYBE that will happen. but it's not likely*
However, performers have that ability to connect with the audience no matter what medium they're in. They have the ability to make people forget about everything else in the world and let them get away for a couple of hours. This connection is especially obvious when it comes to live theatre. Because of this connection, the audience feels closer to that person which in turn fuels the desire for a one-on-one interaction. Yes, I'm aware that the actors are playing a ROLE.
I will say that this really wouldn't be an issue if there weren't crazy stalkerish fan-girls/boys of the various shows that are out there. But, honestly there IS, in fact, a respectful way to approach someone on their way into the stage door.
First look at your watch. If it's getting close to call, usually about 30 minutes before "places", then please let them just go into the stage door. However, if someone is 2 hours early than the call, NICELY ask them if they have a moment, but don't be offended if they say they don't.
It's as simple as that. well maybe that's not exactly simple.. but that's the way i see it.
Performers perform, but that doesn't make them deities who shouldn't be bothered outside the theater. Like it or not, they're celebrities to us and our ilk. This kind of behavior comes with the territory. What's the difference between after and before the show? After the show they might not want to sign/ talk. They could be exhausted. There is no PERFECT time to hang at the stage door.
When you do it, just be courteous.

If I were a performer and running on time, I wouldn't mind giving them a minute or two, but I'd try and cut it short.
As a layman, I HATE being delayed for work, but mainly because the people who usually delay me are chuggers. If it's someone asking for the time or directions, I'm much more mellow about it. Yes, I have a time I'm meant to be at work, but my time-keeping is generally good enough that a couple of minutes stopped isn't going to delay me that much, and if I do end up late, it's not my fault.
Ugh, chuggers. That's something I DON'T miss about Bath. XP

Sorry, British colloquialism. Chuggers = CHarity mUGGERS. They stand in the street with clipboards and bully you into giving them your bank details so you can make a monthly contribution to a charity you don't support. But it doesn't matter, because your first year or so of contributions go nowhere near the charity in question, because they have to get chuggers' wages from somewhere. They're horrifically persistent, can be incredibly rude, and always travel in packs, so even if you manage to avoid one, there's still another seven or so in the area, just waiting to swoop. The scourge of major UK cities! I'll take seagulls any day, thanks. XP

I've met Nathan a few times and each time he was gracious and kind. Even during the hayday of THE PRODUCERS when he was no doubt tired and stressed.
He is indeed a shy person at heart and it's hard for him to "open up" and stage door.
