Going on an overnight trip to the big apple and planning on catching two performances. Catching Wicked on Sunday, trying to decide on which show to see on Saturday night. Here are my options:
Pippin: (about 6 rows back, center mezz)
Avenue Q: (about 6 rows back, Center Orchestra)
Once: (Rear right Mezz)
Phantom: (about 6 rows back, Center Orchestra)
Only caveat is that my wife has seen Phantom (in Philadelphia) before whereas she hasn't seen either of the other shows. If it helps, we're in our early 30's.
Shows I have seen(on broadway):
Rent: Appreciated it, but not my favorite
Les Miserables: Multiple times, loved it
Aida: Original cast, amazing
Mary Poppins: Good, but not great
Cats: Barely remember it, saw it over 20 years ago.
Please help me pick!
According to your likes, I would say Avenue Q. It would be a good contrast from the mega musical that is Wicked.
Pippin and Once are divisive in BWW. Q is still a very good, solid show.
In this order:
Once (intimate and heartbreaking)
Pippin (exciting and most likely to win for Best Revival)
Ave Q (Fun and little risque -- think grown up Sesame Street)
I would choose PIPPIN above all. AVENUE Q is a close second.

Based on your reactions to past shows, I would suggest Phantom, if your wife wants to go again. If not, then I would say Pippin.
But I would also recommend two shows not on your list: The Lion King and Mamma Mia.
I would say see "Pippin" but will admit I thought "Avenue Q" was cute but nothing special.

Okay, so it seems that Pippin is in the lead. Has anyone been to the show yet? Are center mid mezz seats any good?
Lots of us have seen it, either in NY or in Cambridge where it originated. MOST of us have loved it (no show is universally loved by everyone). Yes, those seats should be splendid.
Enjoy.
