Hi All,

Would love thoughts on a second show I can bring my 11-year-old daughters to when we're in NYC for a weekend in early May. We're seeing School of Rock Friday night (their choice, as they're currently in a local production), but need a second show for Saturday night.

They're big Broadway fans and of what's currently running, they've seen Aladdin, Matilda and Les Miz. I've already seen Finding Neverland so don't want to repeat. I was thinking of either Fiddler, She Loves Me, Tuck Everlasting or possibly Daddy Long Legs off Broadway.

Thanks so much for any advice!

For 11 year olds? I'd say Tuck

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I'd say either Fiddler, Tuck Everlasting or Wicked (most pre-teen and teen girls love that show).

I'd say Fiddler - it never goes out of style and is timely.

Wicked, Lion King or Tuck (probably in that order)

*sigh* Just send them to Wicked. They will probably love it and you will hate it because they will be singing the songs constantly. It's like Frozen on stage: decent yet overhyped songs, crazy good production values and great performers.

I appoligise for any spelling mistakes. I may be on my mobile. Clumsy fingers and small little touchscreen keys don't mixx. I try to spellcheck, but I may miss something.

You all are amazing - thank you for all the suggestions!

We're not big fans of Wicked, believe it or not (can I say that here?!), so I'm thinking Tuck or Fiddler may be the best choices, based on all your suggestions. I personally would kill to see Laura Benanti in She Loves Me but I have the feeling it may be too slow for 11-year-olds. :) Thanks again!

You can definitely say that about Wicked here, many of us are on your side. There are much more artisticly interesting things on stages right now, I cannot speak for others but for me Wicked seemed to be the first musical to come to mind when you said tween. Just keep in mind that Tuck has not opened yet or even started previews. That is not to say that it will be bad or it will be great, but to say we don't know what the Broadway version of it will be.

I know I'm probably in the minority but I found Fiddler slow as molasses. And I really don't see the appeal for tweens.  The daughters who are supposed to be young are played by older actresses. I would take them anywhere but there. All the kids surrounding me when I went looked bored to tears.

I don't know anything about Tuck so I can't speak to that.  Or Daddy Long Legs.

I really thought Fiddler was excellent but I don't think it would be my suggestion for your girls.

I wouldn't rule out She Loves Me.  I think they might really enjoy it and I don't think they will find it too slow at all.  And I know you will love it!

I would say She Loves Me.   Really, really well done.  I honestly think every review I read last night (opening night for She Loves Me) was positive.  And if you like going to the stage door, Zachary Levi is great.  Signs autographs and takes pictures with everyone.   I think the girls would be bored to death seeing Fiddler. Haven't seen Tuck, so I don't have an opinion there.

I didn't even think of that..Zachary Levi..voice of Eugene/Flynn Ryder in the Disney movie "Tangled" is the lead here in She Loves Me.

I don't know many Tween girls ..and their parents..who don't love that movie.

Daddy Long Legs or "Cagney" -- any chance they've watched any Turner Classic Movies?  Daddy Long Legs is very sweet and Megan McGinnis and her real life husband, Adam Halpin, star in it.  And it's very "New York" early 20th century -- "Cagney" starts out in NYC, ends in Hollywood.

If you are in NYC on a Friday, at Birdland at 5:15 a bunch of musicians from Broadway pit bands play big band music for an hour til about 6:15 or so and then go to their respective jobs afterwards.  The food is very good at Birdland -- anyone I've sent to the Friday big band show has raved about it -- it's a unique place for dinner, and in the heart of the theater district, W 44 between 8th and 9th.  There's a good chance that if you're going to a musical on Friday night one of the Birdland players might be in the orchestra for the show you'd be going to -- the girls would probably get a real kick of that -- they could go to the front of the house and wave to him or her later.

What about the King & I? It's an amazing production of a great show.

She Loves Me.

Make sure and stage door after the show. Willing to bet they would enjoy the fun provided by Zach Levi.

Let me add Finding Neverland to the list, all lot here hated it, but it really is an enjoyable show, best thing ever, no, but a fun enjoyable night out, yes!

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Tuck would be my first pick.

She Loves Me, Fiddler, and King & I would also be great.

I would add "Something Rotten" to the list others have provided, it is very funny and I assume 11 yr olds have heard of William Shakespeare.

I would go with Tuck, what I heard and have seen of it looks really good.

Unless they are major musical theater nerds and listen to the cast recordings of the classics already I would stay away from King & I, Fiddler and She Loves Me, as much as I liked the latter. Both Fiddler and King & I are almost 3 hours with a very long Act 1, I liked them but I even found that a bit long to sit through. Seems though for 11-years olds, again, unless they have already developed a love for the classics.

Something Rotten could be a good alternative, but I don't know many many shows they know (from OBCs and such) to get all the references. It's only half the fun if most of those go over your head... and there are lots of inuendos in the show as well, which might be a consideration...

Daddy Long Legs is now one of my favorites musicals, and if you want to take them to a more quiet, intimate show as a contrast to SoR, go with that one over She Loves Me. The themes of that show are much more relatable for kids than She Loves Me, which is a straight-up romance.

Something Rotten, Finding Neverland, Wicked, or even Phantom...Aladdin can never go wrong either
