Nessarose and understudies

I heard an, um "unconventionally not technically legally acquired" recording of "The Wicked Witch of the East" and I'm sure it was Shoshana as Elphie but it didn't sound like Michelle Federer as Nessa. The girl doing it had a much bigger, brassier sound to her voice. I saw Michelle Federer once, but it was my first time so I was taking in a lot of information-but I don't remember her voice being that big. Has anyone seen any of the Nessarose understudies? Do you know who I might have heard on that recording?

It was probably Shoshana. She did go on at the end of December as Nessa. If it wasn't Shoshana, it was probably Cristy Candler.

Shoshana went on as Nessa? I know Eden did too-how come they aren't credited with that in the program?

i believe that are officially listed as standby for elpahaba and understudy for nessarose so it would be listed down in the understudies not the standby section (same with stacie morgain lewis now who's the glinda standby/ nessa u/s)

I believe it's Shoshana and Jennifer Laura Thompson.

It was probably Cristy Candler.

what was the date of the recording??? if it was october, it was probably shoshana. but if it wasnt, it was probably cristy candler. cristys voice is very similar to michelles, shoshanas is pretty different. so if it was similar to michelles voice, it mustve been cristy.

I've heard that shoshana didn't do that well as nessa, she was plain and did nothing that shows off her belt, she just sat and sang.

well in shoshanas defense, nessa doesnt have the greatest material to exactly show off her belt. that being said, much credit to michelle federer and jenna leigh green (in the tour) for rising above that and playing the part perfectly.

I have The Wicked Witch of the East from one of the times Shoshana went on as Nessa. It's the best I've ever heard. Better than Michelle, Cristy and Jenna Leigh Green.

i have jenna, michelle, and shoshana and i saw cristy and jenna live. theyre all good in their own way b/c they perform it in their own way. cristy was better than i expected (her being the understudy.) shoshana was my least fav, she is MUCH better as elphie, nessa just doesnt show off her voice. jenna i think is the perfect nessa. michelle is amazing, also.

Yes, I have seen Heidi. She was very good and I felt played the role very well. She played Nessa a little darker than usual, but it worked out very well, and she did more than a great job. She is also a very nice and kind woman, I met her one day before one of her shows, and she was very nice, and more than willing to chat and take pictures. A very nice woman indeed!

Thanks for the info everyone-I saw Heidi Kettenring in Chicago (and will be seeing her again this Sunday unless an understudy is on) and she was very very good. Really made the most of that part. I think there's stuff to be found in it, but you just need a very smart actress to bring it out. I'd like to see Jenna-is she better as ELphie or Nessa? I REALLY cannot see Shoshana as Nessa. I'm sure that was interesting.

Meg, Shoshana is an AMAZING Elphaba. I saw her live and i LOVED her (and this was after being addicted to the CD forever and seeing Stephanie live). Her No Good Deed is just spine tingling, as is her Defying Gravity. Shes just flat out amazing!
