I saw Saycon nearly fifteen times and never once saw/heard her forget the words. Not saying that she didn't, just saying I never witnessed it.

Caren's one of those women I would gladly pay a ticket to see her read out of a phone book.
I know she has an AMAZING voice, I'm just saying, she's too white to be cast.
TheGaissilent~ I agree. I have seen the show WAY too many times, and I fortunately got to see her as "maureen" this past time. She BLEW me away, but I could definitely see her as mimi.
whatyouown~ too white to be cast? apparently not, she's the current mimi u/s...

jwei, I love Caren's Maureen.
And we won't talk about the fact that I could have seen her as Mimi last Tuesday night and didn't. I'm an ass.
thega~ ohhh that's not good! I would pay ALOT of money to see her as mimi soon...it'll happen
when i found out she was maureen the night i went a few weeks ago, i nearly peed my pants!

Understudys are a different story. There have been black women to go on as Maureen, but they wouldn't actually *cast* a black woman as Maureen full time. Do you see what I'm saying? There have been fully white Angel understudys, but I don't believe there's ever been a completely caucasion full time Angel.
Oh and ugh, I saw Rent wednesday night, Caren was on tuesday! But I love Karmine so...
Well then, maybe it's time for a change.
But actually, that's not necessary. As long as I get to see CLM go on as mimi (even if she is still an understudy) i'll be thrilled.

Jwei123 what's the story behind the picture with all the mimi's. i never saw that before, but whatever it is it looks amazing!

It's from Easter Bonnet last year, I think. It was all the current Rent Mimis (Krystal Washington, Caren Lyn Manuel, Karmine Alers, Dominique Roy) and Daphne.

Krisstofer Cusick played Angel on the first national tour and he is white. He started put understudying Angel and Mark and then took over as Angel.
Girlfriendfromcanada~ You got it right on...

I don't think the degree of "whiteness" an actor posesses has or should have anything to do with it...I believe the only reference made to Mimi's ethnicity is that she is latino, and I know many "white" people who are latino...that being said, with a tan, many "white" people would probably have very similar skin tone to Karmine Alers (who I saw Friday evening)
I saw Saycon 5 times as Mimi and every time she forgot the words in Out Tonight. And this wasn't early into her run...it was right in the middle.
And okay, so Karmine is notorious for rearranging the words to Without You but that girl can sing! Amen to whomever suggested her as a good Elphaba. Her and Caren should take a crack at it..
I was just talking to someone last night- Even if caren didn't play Elphaba (which i think she is capable of), I would LOVE to hear her sing some of those songs. Her voice is AWESOME!

Isn't that a picture from a previous tour?
I'm pretty sure that's Antonique Smith, who was a great Mimi.
It's Antonique Smith :) She has played Mimi, she's got an awesome voice too!
Yeaaah, I couldn't remember her last name.
i'd just like to add my two cents...
cary + karmine = as good as it gets next to adam and daphne...
i LOVE them, and am hoping that they renew.

i saw caren in rent last tuesday. i don't know. i'm very biased to karmine so maybe that's partially why i didn't like her so much as mimi. She had an amazing voice, don't get me wrong, but i felt like something was missing. I would love to see her as maureen though, have never experienced that. i also wanna see karmine's maureen- i've heard she was funny. as for cary- i like him, but i feel he doesn't have enough aggression. i feel like he smiles too much which is not a bad thing by any means.. just in certain parts of that show he shouldn't really be smiley..am i right? when i saw it on tuesday he had a little more than when i saw him in february. he has an awesome voice, i just miss my jeremy :) that's just my two cents though
Perhaps its just me who feels this way but I'm not sure that I see why it's such a big deal for Mimi to be latino or tan skinned. I mean, sure its been a reference and has become a stereotype for the character but there is nothing in the actual show or plotline that would be hindered by Mimi being played by someone of a different ethnicity as far as I know. I understand that its how Jonathan Larson originaly wrote the character but 10 years later, I think it could be open to other ethnicities trying out for the role. (and I stand by that for other characters as well.) I mean Mimi is a role I'd certainly enjoy playing some day (probably very unlikely because I am asian) but I'm just saying that if the actress has talent then it shouldnt really matter much what ethnicity she is.
