re: * New Poll Topic * - Casting Jean Valjean!

As much as I love Colm, I'd like to see Randal Keith cast as Valjean. A better poll question would be who should play Javert. My short list would be:

Terrence Mann
Phillip Quast
Michael McCarthy

I would actually like to see an entire brand new cast. The original Broadway run suffered a lot from "auto pilot" syndrome.

Isn't Colm Wilkinson a little too old to play ValJean?

Yes, of course Colm Wilkinson is too old, come on people, this is so boring.

Someone new - someone who will bring freshness to the role.

My undying vote is for Michael Cerveris.

Michael Ball -

He has the vocal range ( have you heard him sing BRING HIM HOME in his album CENTRE STAGE?), the stage presence, the stage experience ( he has been in big-time musical theatre for the last 21 years - starting from the role of Marius in the original production of LES MISERABLES), the appeal on both sides of the Atlantic, and the distinct experience of singing the role at WINDSOR CASTLE!

this is what I wrote on the poll and I thought it would be good to put it here too:

i know a lot of people voted for Colm Wilkinson, and I would love to see him too, but he will not do it. They had to plead him with him to do that dream cast concert. Cause, he has done like, every other recording. he feels that other people should be given the chance. And not to be mean, but he is getting old.

Raul has the singing voice but I think he would be a better Javert, cause he has those creepy eyes (and don;t get me wrong, i like him) like Terrence Mann does (and I like him too, my favorite Javert.)

I love Raul Esparza, but there is no way he can handle the vocal demands of LES MIS. I do not want to hear "Stars" screamed with uncontrollable vibrato, I'm sorry.

My ideal cast would probably look something like this:

Valjean: Michael Cerveris or Michael Ball
Javert: Michael Cerveris or Robert Cuccioli
Fantine: Marla Schaffel, Audra MacDonald, Victoria Clark or Bernadette Peters
Cosette: Kelli O'Hara, or Sally Murphy
Eponine: Sutton Foster
Marius: Patrick Wilson, Stephen Buntrock

sutton foster has played eponine already.

and bernadette Peters is too old to play Fantine. and her voice is not Les Mis quality.

I know Sutton played the role already, but she was brilliant.

I found this photo of Michael Ball in Jean Valjean costume. It was taken at the Queen's Theatre in London when he appeared post-show with the regular cast onstage, before they were taken to Windsor Castle for that special concert for Queen Elizabeth and state guest President Chirac of France.

Thanks to Cheryl and Carol for the photo.

Does Philip Quast have the high notes for that role? I LOVE the man, but does he really have the range?

Considering he sings the role on the CSR, yes (unless his voice has significantly changed).
