Well if it's a revival, so is Kinky Boots.

A blank post from finebydesign, just like of of his/her posts with words predicting that Cinderella would be a complete flop and "not survive the winter."

You're asking us to predict the actions of an irrational and inconsistent Tony committee, the issue being whether or not this show will be deemed to be a classic under the Tony eligibility rules. Good luck with that.

I guess it depends how they define 'new musical', is it a New musical? No its been around for years. But is new to Broadway.

OK, we will, but what winter were you referring to? The one that ends in two weeks? I think based on the multimillion dollar advance, it's a pretty safe bet it will stay up for a couple of more weeks. Not to mention the fact that it's been selling out the Broadway Theater, and grossing over $1 million a week during previews. And according to Riedel's column today, it took in over $250,000 on Monday. So what are we going to see, exactly?

When I made that prediction I did not know Mary Poppin's was closing. That said, I don't think the show has legs. Outside of the diaper set, I don't know how they can keep it open without any stars. It got "ok" reviews, but Matilda hasn't opened yet and Annie is already to start stunt-casting. I'm not shocked by the numbers it's getting, but that's a frothy little bubble.

Actually, I think that the show has two stars, one named Richard Rodgers, the other named Oscar Hammerstein. Actually, it's three stars if you include the name Cinderella. And you said many other things about how crazy it was to mount this show, which we can all review by researching your posts.

In addition, it has a future star (I'd actually say current) in Laura Osnes, who I think is well on her way to being one of Broadway's brightest.

I don't care what any of us thinks about a particular show after seeing it. We each are entitled to our opinions, and while I might disagree strenuously with someone else's take on a show, I respect their right to express their opinion. What bothered me so much about your posts was that you seemed to delight in trashing Cinderella months before the first preview performance.

I don't think it's a dumb poll. I'm sure the Tony committee (ever unpredictable) will spend a lot of time discussing this issue.

I'm also curious to see what posters here think.

Keep in mind: When Little Shop OH made its Broadway premiere in 2003, it fell under "Best Revival of a Musical" because of the hit movie and the fact that it was placed Off-Broadway. Cinderella has a lot of movie adaptions and it has been on Off-Broadway, so I wouldn't be surprised if it falls under "Best Revival". But, I'd say that will most likely fall under "Best Musical" because of the new book and songs.

Although, when a show that has been on Broadway before is revised with a new book it's generally considered a revival. I think there are points to make for this being either, but I'd call it a revival if it were up to me.

This is a show that has never been on broadway. Its in the best new musical category. Look at all the disney shows... all movies before big hits on broadway... none of them were considered revivals. It wouldnt make sense for it to be a revival.... Pippin, Mystery of Edwin Drood, Jekyll and Hyde, and Annie have all been on broadway and they will be the four in the Best Revival Category. and As of now, ANNIE has the best chance... although we havent seen Pippin yet... I have a feeling those two will duke it out. Drood will be closed and Jekyll.. well... lol... Good luck Annie and Pippin!

Most, if not all, of those Disney shows weren't stage versions before they played Broadway, though.

Neither did Little Shop and it was classified a revival.

Best Revival is between Drood and Pippin, whether or not Cinderella is in the category. They're both strong contenders for very different reasons. But don't underestimate the amount of good will Drood and its' cast have in this industry, just because the show is closed.

Cinderella should be considered a new musical, in my opinion, but I could really see this going either way.

Is there even a proper definition for a new musical? This whole thing/process seems really unfair. Most of the Disney shows came to Broadway like this. Did Baz's La Boheme get listed as a revival? Contact had all canned music. So weird.

The cast of Drood is amazing, yes... I expect some nominations for the show of course... but we all know that the Tonys are about politics and money. DROOD will not be profiting at all from a win... it was a box office flop, and thats a shame... but the tony will go to ANNIE or PIPPIN seeing that they will still be open... and as far as money and box office... pippin seems like they need it more... Annie has been at the top of the box office since they opened, grossing an average of a million dollars a week... Im excited to Pippin... saw drood and loved it... but also felt as though the cast didnt care the night i was there... and honestly i wouldnt have either if i was them... no one was in there mezz. ugh... it was awful. that show depends on having butts in the seats... it was awkward. Ill say it again... Annie was stunning and updated... and Pippin had amazing reviews out of town... They will be duking it out.

If we are going by Tony committee rulings in the recent past Cinderella should be classified as a revival.

Oleanna, which had never been on Broadway, was classified as a revival. I believe Don't Dress For Dinner was called a revival last year even though it too was making a Broadway debut.

Whether one agrees is up for debate, but if you go by their past rulings a show that has been around for a decade or more and has had productions in the New York area will most likely be considered a revival.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

I posted the link to the Tony rules in a different thread last week, but the question for the committee is going to be whether Cinderella is considered to be a "classic", which if I recall correctly is left undefined. If it is deemed to be a classic, it will be eligible as a revival and not as new. This can go either way, and I would not look to precedent because the committee has proven to be consistent only in its inconsistency.

If I had to bet, (and again, it's a 50-50 proposition), I'd bet on it being considered new, because: a) it's never been on Broadway; b) the book is completely new; and c) perhaps most importantly, I guess that Robyn Goodman will campaign mightily for it to be new, and as far as I know, she's pretty respected in the business. At least, I've heard nothing to indicate otherwise.
