"I would pay $500 to see Carol Channing as Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady."
LMFAO you have no idea how amusing that was for me to read. I sat here saying/doing my impression "The Rain In Spain..." but all channing-like

I am finding myself doing these Carol impressions a little too often, and cracking up each time...

In all actuality...Carol did If I were a Rich man from Fiddler on a TV special with Pearl Bailey from the 60's...
I'm not joking, she actually did, and when I saw it, it was the first time I've peed my pants since the time Mrs Bankard wouldnt let me borrow the bathroom pass in 1st grade.

Motormouth in Hairspray: "Cyome on myiss buttercup, we're gyonna ryap this mother up..."

I am beyond serious...Pearl Bailey did a song from Music Man (either 76 Trombones or Trouble, I cant remember)
Do an amazon.com or Barnes and Noble search for Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey (DVD)
I promise u it happened

Now there's coffee splattered on my computer screen...
And there's an image of Carol and Pearl singing "Do You Love Me?" going through my head...

Posted: 8/20/04 at 10:40amIn all seriousness - I wish she would do an autobiographical one-woman show along the lines of Stritch's show. If she would really tell the warts and all truth, I think her story might be every bit as amazing, if not more so.

How about Kim in Bye Bye Birdie?
"How Luvleeee to beee a Womyan"
It would add depth to the show if she was older than Mr. Macafee (and even Ed Sullivan!)

Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:10amI was just thinking about the Channing/Bailey concert as well. I have it on DVD and watched it for the first time a couple of months again. Her "If I Were a Rich Man" was truly the most bizarre song choice in the show, but it was damn funny to watch.

Roles Carol Channing (TGC) MUST play:
Lady MacBeth ("Out, out damned shpot. Out I shay!")
Millie ("Gimme, gimme")
Guinevere ("I Loved You Once in Shilench")
Maggie The Cat (Think how divine she'll look in that slip!)
Blanche duBois ("They told me to take a shtreetcar named Deshire and transfer to one called Shemeteries and ride six blocks to Elyshian Fields...")
Marian The Librarian ("Till There Wash You")
...and Mae Peterson. Enough said.

Posted: 10/19/04 at 8:25pmThere seems to be a linguistic progression (I use the term loosely) nowadays to pronounce any "str" sound with an H. Shtreet, shtrive, etc. I wonder if Ms. Channing is the role model for this?

I'm currently a dramaturge (as well as minor cast member) for my college's production of "Sunday in the Park With George". At one delirious point late in the process, the director and I started singing the Old Lady as played by Carol Channing...
"Shunndaaaaaysh dishappearing..."
Needless to say, we scared the hell out of our Dot.

SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!!!
Ms. Channing is one of the American Theater's NATIONAL TREASURES.
She starred in TWO classic musicals from THE GOLDEN AGE: GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1949) & HELLO, DOLLY! (1964).
Don't you bunch of junior high schoolers KNOW that she will FOREVER be associated with the immortal "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"?
WHO gives you the RIGHT to defy such a talented artist?
All you jokesters, just listen to what critic Rohan Preston wrote THIS VERY NIGHT about her one-woman show (currently in Minneapolis):
"Channing made her Broadway debut in January 1941. Nearly 64 years later, she is still going--still charming and entertaining, EVEN IF SHE NEEDS PROMPTING TO REMEMBER HER STORIES AND SONGS.
The octogenarian legend reminisced, told jokes, and did endearing rendentions of songs for which she became famous in the theater.
SO WHAT IF SHE NEEDS TO BE PRODDED TO JOG HER MEMORIES FOR TALES ON SUCH "DEAR FRIENDS" AS ANN MILLER AND ETHEL MERMAN. It is not every day that you get to see a legend, EVEN IF FADED, taking trips down Memory Lane.
While she name-dropped during the show, SHE FORGOT TO MENTION THAT JACKIE KENNEDY CAME TO SEE HER...........
That's enough!
I can't hold it in ANY longer--my sides are shaking...!!!
