Well they clearly have to get all of the cartoons out of the way.
Rather than taking a sure-fire hit like Newsies to the stage, lets take a challenge and make Bambi into a musical or something...
i think it would be difficult to bring it to Broadway as much as Id like to see it. Lots of kids in that show. Even if you cast the bigger roles as adults that look like kids theres still a number of younger ones like Les. Im sure putting actual kids in a fight scene every night would be an accident waiting to happen too. Plus a lot of the dance numbers are used as a means of getting from here to there, and that lends itself more to film.
Not to mention the idea of ALL of those settings for one show? As someone who aspires to be a set designer - that gives me a headache like no other.
they would definitely have to merge a few places or be spare with the design...
maybe make the square right next to where they buy their newspapers the same set piece.
perhaps have them waking up in the street instead of a boarding house?
Yea, you're both right.
We should just keep creating musicals based on them having one singular or stationary set like Wicked, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spamalot, Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers, Grey Gardens, Hairspray, Mamma Mia...
Hey, wait a second...
Those have lots of sets in them! Gee golly, who'da'thunk it!
Newsies doesn't hop from a scene on a space ship to a Hollywood western set to a NYC street set to an Italian villa, its all pretty consistent. Even if it did, its your job to accomodate jumping from one to the other of the afformentioned as a Broadway set designer in a creative manner.
you dont think theres a lot of places shown in Newsies?
Boarding House with bathrooms, Lobby of the Boarding House, the Square, Diner, David's House Rooftop, David's House interior, The Refuge, CourtRoom, Meda's place (inside, outside, side stage, show room), The Brooklyn Bridge, the boxing match, The Docks, inside & outside Pulitzer's offices, the basement sleeping quarters, Governors Office and the list keeps going...
I didnt say it was impossible, and Im not trying to be negative, its one of my favorite movies. Alot of the shows you listed get by on having a few scenes with spare sets here and there which I did say was an option. I just think itd be tricky with this show.
Theres atleast 6 different outdoor street scenes- like the trolley workers rioting, david's sister being harrassed, jack hiding from the police- all in different areas of the city. Maybe those could be done on a bare stage with a backdrop.
They had to do the same with Mary Poppins.
Actually, if anyone has this (or was it last) weeks Entertainment Weekly they have a breakdown (from the set designer) of the Poppins set and how they incorporate the majority of it into one of the larger set pieces.
I think anything is do-able and it certainly has the adaptability.
The argument of not having enough young actors seems a little implausible. Just before this recent tour of Annie I was at the Wicked lottery and in front of us was a group made up of I believe 2 families with 7 little girls all there auditioning for Annie and the other orphans, and all very talented. The talent is out there and has been used for other shows, including the afformentioned Annie.
There are also plenty of actors in their 20s who can pass for some of the older newsies.
Hah....I have definitely designed this show all the way through...I even built a mini model. Mine was essentially a unit set of the main square, and each building in the square open up to become one of the other locations.

That sounds like an awesome idea.
And yea, I did the same thing when I wanted my school to adapt Moulin Rouge into a stage show. And yes, it was an all-boy Jesuit institution...
I wasnt suggesting that there wasnt enough talent, I was speaking to insurance, child wranglers, etc. Hiring a child has its complications. Hairspray started out with a child but moved away from it to have less people and less expenses. What I wouldnt want to see is the show treated like Grease where everyone ends up looking like theyre thirty.

sorry sorry sorry!
i make mistakes like that alot.
mybad.
haha broadwayfreak your funny
i love the movie too. i think it would be great to see it on broadway. these people in the business make magic happen on stage, im sure the set designers or whomever works on the scenery and set designs can come up with something amazing. i mean the Drowsy has so many different things going on, as well as Wicked. i think its doable.
