"Gypsy" won't be revived anytime soon. Even with Bernadette, the show wasn't a big draw.
But in 15 or 20 years, I'm sure some actress we love today will be given a shot. Shall we go through a short list of current hot actresses?:
Sutton has the voice, and judging by LW, the necessary acting chops. Idina has the voice as well, but not the acting chops. Eden. Ehh, no. Cheno?...too much like Bernadette in many ways. Am I forgetting anyone?
In 15 or 20 years, Julia Murney or Emily Skinner!
Karen Ziemba. Remember that Rose is all about the acting, singing is secondary.
I seriously think Idina would be a fabulous Mama Rose in about 15 years. However, she would have to sharpen her acting skills a bit.

Ziemba would be a bit long in the tooth when the show is next revived? Or isn't she as old as she appears to be?
I'm sorry but I will NEVER see Idina as Mama Rose. GYPSY will always remain a classic musical and Idina does not have a classic singing style. Judging by the her performances in musicals and her CDs...I just do not see her ever playing this role.
However, I DO like the thought of Karen Ziemba.
PJ, she would be within a few years of the age Lansbury and Merman were when they played it. I'm not even gonna ask you how old you think she "appears to be."
Liza NEEDS to do the tour. She would be the greatest Mama Rose.

In 15 to 20 years, Rathnait62, Ms. Ziemba will be 62 or 67. Depending on whether you use 15 or 20. That's far too old to play Rose. She's supposed to have young kids at the start of the show. I don't think a 60-something year old woman could pass for having small children.
My point was that she would be too old for the next revival. She would have been age appropriate for the last revival. Not any future Broadway mountings.
And as far as the Liza idea goes; yikes. She should have played the part atleast 10 years ago. She could never carry this show successfully 8 times a week now. Or anytime in the future for that matter.
PJ, I was talking about a revival closer to 10 years away than 20. In 10 years, she'd be the age Bernadette was when she played Rose.
And yes, Liza would have been great. I'm afraid her time has passed not only age-wise, but also as far as handling the rigors of a Broadway schedule anymore.

I see, I see. But 10 years would be much to soon to revive it again. Especially since it would be the 4th revival of this show. It's generally revived 14-15 years after the last production.
You're right, PJ. She would have been a kick-ass Rose though. *sigh*
You know who would have been amazing stunt-casting if they were to keep the revival going? Barbra Streisand. Granted she would never REPLACE anyone, but that would be interesting...
I liked the idea of Julia Murney. I've never seen her act before, so I don't know if she would pull that off. Idina is not a very good idea, in my mind. Neither is Sutton. She's too pure to play it.
Jennifer Holliday. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Just one little thing - is it Mama Rose or Madam Rose? I know everyone says Mama Rose, but isn't she mostly called Madam Rose in the actual show?
Bernadette was the oldest Rose, wasn't she? Age schmage.

Hallie Eisenberg.
That production will be officially recognized as the end of Broadway and musical theatre.
She's only called Madame Rose by a theater owner and the hotel landlord (as I recall). And yes, Bernadette was the oldest Rose.
Julia Murney would be absolutely fantastic, as would Idina Menzel. I love Sutton to death and she is a phenomenal actress, but I'm just not seeing a tall, lanky girl playing Mama Rose.

CAROLEE CARMELLO! Hands DOWN.
(Murney and E-Skins are runners up, definitely.)
Of course, daisy. I can't believe I didn't think of her!

I would love Patti LuPone to play the part, maybe in London? Id also love to see either Liza M or Lorna Luft play the part. I would have really loved to see if Judy Garland would have ever played the part, she would have been great

After thinking about this a little more, I'm going hands-down with Emily Skinner (hehe. E-skins. I like that.) She's got that big, brassy, voice and is a heck of an actress. Though I wouldn't complain if Carolee was booked.
I agree, Idina would be a horrible choice, and I'm a big Idina fan. I mean, she could technically sing the songs, but it would just be/feel/seem ...off ..somehow.
