I feel like what I said before the production designs of Gypsy were misunderstood by some people. I just meant that there is no “chandelier” in Gypsy. There is no major set piece or design element that is so integral to the legacy of the show that it is not open to reinterpretation by new designers in subsequent productions. When people go to see Phantom they want the candelabras coming out of the stage, the boat, and the big Masquerade staircase and everything that they’ve seen in pictures for the last 20 years. That design of that show is legendary. That’s not to say that the production designs of Gypsy, or any other show, are not equally as important in contributing to the success of a show, just that they aren’t set in stone.
I rather see Tonya Pinkins before Lillias White, though White's voice is a thousand times more suited for the role. And Murphy has talked extensively about how she suffered major health issues during WONDERFUL TOWN (and the fact it was her first time on Broadway after two miscarriages). And she missed TWO performances during LOVEMUSIK, technically only one since the first one was canceled. So get over it. She'd be legendary as Rose.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
