I'd love to see Beth Leavel try it. She'd sing the hell out of it and I could just really see that working.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

There is no "Mama Rose" in Gypsy. The character is MADAME ROSE, sometimes called Mama and mostly called just Rose.
Now that we've gotten that cleared up, I believe that after Patti Lupone's interpretation there should be a GYPSY moratorium. Give it a rest of 10-15 years and then bring it back with a new dynamic star that can put her own spin on the part.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
This show is playing to 80% because of the performances by Laura Benanti and Patti LuPone (and Boyd Gaines and Leigh Ann Larkin, but Benanti and of course most importantly LuPone are the reason the show is doing any kind of business). To use Lenora Menetz would be pointless, even if she is brilliant, the reality of the business is she hasn't been able to have the marquee name that every single woman who has played Rose on Broadway has. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any marquee name who would replace LuPone. Talk about a tough act to follow!

Christine Andreas would be sensational. Different but sensational.

Wow, Sara Ramirez could sing the SH*T out of the score.

Gypsy’s the kind of show that should close when its star leaves. Not just in the case of this production, but as a general rule in regards to Gypsy. The role of Madam Rose requires a star, and every star deserves to have her own production. Each production, therefore, can be tailored and reinterpreted to showcase her strengths. The appeal of Gypsy is the performances, not the production design. There’s no reason to have a revolving door of stars cycle through a single production of the show a la Phantom or Les Mis.
Every show deserves great production values, no matter who the star is. The original GYPSY had settings and lighting by the legendary Jo Mielzinern and costume by the amazing Raoul Pene du Bois. Their contributions are part of the original success of the show. Broadway audiences also deserve the entire package. A star turn is always exciting but theatre is a collaboration not a "solo" performance. and real animals too.
To be honest, I want the next revival to be a true revelation of the show. I would like to see either an all-black cast (so many black actors out there that could blow this show through the roof!) - or (and I kind of want this more) a gender-switched Gypsy. A stage dad and his son. Can we say Barret Foa as Gypsy?
I would really like to see Liza play Rose. She would need a chaperone to make sure she stays off the booze and what not during the run, and it'd have to be a very limited engagement.
Liza never doing GYPSY is such a missed opportunity, so is Bea Arthur.
Arthur Laurents has said, though, that Liza wouldn't be right for Rose because Liza begs for the audience's affection, whereas Rose "couldn't care less". That said, he also said Patti had no sense of humour and no consonants. It seems his opoinions are harsh but not written in stone.
"appeal of Gypsy is the performances, not the production design."
Why are so many people uneducated about theatre? The only way to make a show appealing is to have each design and performance area balanced. Any good director, designer, composer, performer, etc., can tell you that a show is not just about its stars. It's about each are working together in unison. If there's an imbalance everyone can tell.
"Light the candles! Get the ice out! Roll the rug up, it's today!"

If you want to get technical her name is Patti LuPone. Now that we've gotten THAT cleared up, even the critics (see both The Times and The Post) refer to the character as "Mama (actually Momma) Rose". It has become the vernacular, even though she may never called Momma Rose in the show.
