Hopefully neither of the two Disney shows that have been running for far too long already.
I'd like to see CHICAGO take over the title.

Posted: 4/16/06 at 8:05pmWasn't Disney trying to make Beauty and the Beast the longest running musical?

There is no way that RENT has 9 more years left in it, which it would need to run just to catch up to where PHANTOM is today.
BEAUTY is about 6 years behind, but the word earlier this year was that Disney was considering closing the show around the opening of MARY POPPINS (4 Disney shows on Bway actually means their shows are competing with each other).
So I highly doubt anything on Broadway right now is going to go near PHANTOM's record. OPERA will in fact probably live to see its 25 year anniversary.

speaking in terms of length of run;
beauty and the beast(i think it opened 94/95)
rent (96)
chicago(97)
wicked will at some point take it but since disney is disney, and neither of the others cost very much to run and are very popular those 3 will take the title first.

Posted: 4/16/06 at 11:10pmI see Phantom reaching 10,000 easily. I don't see any current show that could come close to that number. As well as Wicked is doing, I can't see it getting to 10,000+. I don't think there's enough actresses to play Elphaba.

Posted: 4/16/06 at 11:30pmI have been saying Beauty and the Beast for a long time, and I still think that. It just keeps chugging along, with steady audiences. It's a classic. Not a fad. Personally, I would like it to be RENT, but I don't think it will.

"Spamalot".
The fact that the audience is full of middle-schoolers and high school boys (as well as the previously untapped 30-male group which is a HUGE market for theater)bepseaks of the timeless appeal of fart jokes.
"Spamalot" has been likened to a big-budget "Forbidden Broadway" and I believe that has been running for as long as POTO.

The A CHORUS LINE revival ^_~
-Adam Shankman.
"I haven't left this building since Windows 3.1!"
"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

Beauty and the Beast will come close, but I really think that The Lion King will be next to take the title.
It could be REALLY close, though. Rent just got a shot in the arm with the movie and all, so it could run at least another three years - I'd like to see Rent at least pass A Chorus Line.
I think it's waayyy to early to judge whether Wicked will outrun the current champions. Wicked is a DAMN expensive show in a BIG house, and is currently at its popularity peak. Whether it can sustain this is yet to be seen. For example, I thought the Producers would run for forever, but it's not looking like it'll be able to sustain thre years later.
Bring this up again in three years and we can talk Wicked.

Posted: 4/17/06 at 4:03pmI think RENT, just cuz we're talking about the NEXT longest running, not another longest running. Rent already has what some 10 years on it? not many other shows besided beauty has that but just RENT's themes i think will make it last
