Posted: 4/15/06 at 1:10pmConsidering how well it's doing in the box office, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Wicked.

I second that, pandajen. Although I'm not sure if it's deservant of that title.
I would hope for RENT. Great music, great message, great everything!

WICKED is the only show on Broadway at present that might be able to vie for that title. I personally think PHANTOM will actually out run RENT, BATB and maybe even THE LION KING.

Posted: 4/15/06 at 2:11pmRegrettably, I agree with Michael. PHANTOM is still going unbelievably strong, it won't be closing anytime soon. As much as I'd like to see a show like Rent overtake it, I don't see PHANTOM closing anytime soon to enable that, unless ALW & Co. decide to close PHANTOM "on top" while ticket sales are still good. And I doubt that.

Easily BEAUTY & THE BEAST. It opened before any of the other shows mentioned here, and it's one of the few kids shows on Broadway. The parents take the kids to see BEAUTY, the grandparents take them to LION KING, and if TARZAN succeeds, they'll take 'em to see that. As long as children continue to be produced, BEAUTY won't be going anywhere. I could also say that as long as tourists exist, PHANTOM isn't going anywhere. But WICKED could change that down the line.

My first instinct said "The Lion King" but "Beauty and the Beast" has an additional three years ahead of TLK...I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Disney produced show.

Posted: 4/15/06 at 4:05pmI have to agree with everyone that thinks it will be Rent, followed by Wicked. I think Rent will have just enough staying power to pass Phantom (If only by the slightest margin). The movie definitely helped it's chances by bring in new fans. Wicked on the other hand I think, will become the unreachable star of broadway runs. This show is a phenomenon, the likes of which I have never seen. I can't see it running out of steam in 10,15,20 or even 30 years from now the way it is going. I think it will set a mark for performances that no one will ever reach again.

It will take a bit, but I can also see MAMMA MIA! becoming one of the longer running shows... after BEAUTY, RENT, and THE LION KING. WICKED will most likely continue to be sold out by performance 7000 at the rate its going. So if I was to sportscast this one, assuming nobody shows up to Phantom and it closes.
PHANTOM closes.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST passes PHANTOM.
RENT passes PHANTOM.
CHICAGO passes PHANTOM, then closes soon after.
THE LION KING passes PHANTOM and CHICAGO.
THE PRODUCERS closes before reaching LES MIS.
and amidst it all... MAMMA MIA! continues its climb.
Many years later... WICKED passes them all.

I don't understand why everyone is saying Wicked. Yes, it is incredibly popular, but also, has only been running for three years...it's a bit too soon to be saying that, considering Phantom has it beat by about 14 years and over 6000 performances right now.
