re: Next show to close?

EponineThenardier, there were a ton of people behind ASU, but it still closed anyway. The Palace is a huge theatre, and it'll be hard to file people into such a big theatre for a show that doesn't have much hype.

My vote is Lestat.

re: Next show to close?

I didn't think Festen's numbers were that bad. And it must cost next to nothing to produce.

I can't believe people aren't saying WELL. It was in the 20's last week. But hopefully with the great reviews it will pull through. I love that show.

Anyway, my vote probably goes to RIng of Fire.

re: Next show to close?

Actually, with a cast of 20 (including understudies), some of whom due to their "name" status are likely making quite a bit more than Equity minimum, FESTEN is certainly one of the most expensive nonmusicals in town at the moment. The star salaries in Odd Couple and Three Days of Rain might cause those shows to have a higher weekly cost, but given that they're both sold out, it doesn't really matter -- they're raking in HUGE profits. FESTEN isn't so lucky and probably can't get away with too many weeks of sub-70% attendance.

The Tonys are in about two months. Most shows will hang on and even lose money until then, just in case a miracle happens and they end up winning something and getting a boost at the box office. However, nearly every year, a bunch of shows end up closing within a week or two after the awards come out (some years as many as 6 or 7 shows), so I'm guessing we'll see that scenario play out again this year.

As much as I love it, I can't help think that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will be gone soon. I LOVE that show, but I'm just not quite sure how long it will still be on after Norbert's gone.

re: Next show to close?

DRS's numbers are just fine. It may lose a bit after Butz leaves, but it'll at least last out the year. We'll see how much it struggles when the box office traditionally dips in February.

As long as DRS is above $600,000 every week, they have nothing to worry about.

Excuse me, people are paying over $100 per ticket to see a show these days. We can't be charitable and give "chances" to things when our hard earned money is involved.

re: Next show to close?

I'm puzzled why someone would rather that Ring of Fire close before something else. Is it only that Neomystyk29 doesn't like Ring of Fire? As long as it sells enough tickets to keep the actors and the musicians employed, I can't see why anyone would want this or any show to close.

re: Next show to close?

There is a big argument that "a show of better quality and merit" deserve the space.

On some level, I agree, but on another level, if the show is breaking even every week (whcih in essence should not warrant it's staying open for very long), and everyone is having fun and getting paid, then why not?

re: Next show to close?

Yeah, true Thesbijean, there are plenty of sh*tty shows still running on Broadway that should have closed forever ago. I dunno, I find it sorta insulting to the theater community to keep a show running for longer than say, 10 years. It is excessive and they've made PLENTY of money. But whatever, its all business.

Next show to close...Hm...I'm actually surprised Ring of Fire hasn't closed yet, but if they're willing to pay the money, then I guess it should stay open. Its not going to get nominated for anything, so I imagine it will close sometime after the Tony nominess are announced.

Lestat is actually doing good at the box office, at least from the past couple of weeks. We'll see how the box office slips after the reviews, but with Elton John's name attached and its great location in Times Square, I imagine it will do just fine for a while.

re: Next show to close?

Wow. What a gruesome subject this is. I was uncomfortable the first time a subject like this was proposed but here we go again.

Say what you will about shows you don't like but they are the children of their composers/writers and the lifeline of hundreds of individuals behind the scenes, on stage and in the f.o.h. who have all pinned their hopes on their show's success. Most shows, even the crap ones, are a labor of love (except for Rockabye Hamlet and Carmelina which had to be the spawn of...but I digress...) I just kind of feel that most of you, if you had an ailing child would be offended if the neighbours took wagers on when the kid was going to die...

But hey, it is, at least for a few more months anyway until Bush strips away the rest of our rights, still a free country and I'll defend to my stage death your right to contribute to this subject. It just seems such a shame that we, who obviously have such a great love for Broadway, couldn't find a more positive use for our negative energy (like organizing a whispering campaign that watching movies causes cancer, so if you want to save your life, see a Broadway show.....)

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee ... and anyone who thinks Wicked should close ... I'll put a spell on you!

Anyone who thinks Spelling Bee should close I'll push you off the bleachers and take your helment away.

It may be true but I can't imagine a day without my precious Spelling Bee. I'll forever be in denial that it has to close someday.

re: Next show to close?

Spelling Bee is one of the least expensive to run and most profitable shows (percentage-wise) on Broadway. It's going to be around for at least a couple of years.

re: Next show to close?

Festen or Ring of Fire. I don't think fire will last much longer considering Company needs a theatre for the November opening so it will take one of them. And Lestat will get better, just give it time, I dont think it will close too soon.

re: Next show to close?

I can see some potential in Lestat belive it or not. I mean it could start a new 'gothic' era in the world of musicals. That made no sense.
#49

re: Next show to close?

Spelling Bee is going to last at least 4-5 more years. It's very cheap to produce, word of mouth is excellent as were reviews, and its one of the best musicals on Broadway right now. It's not going anywhere for a while.

I think Well will be going soon. 20-30% for Well compared to Bee and Lestat's 80-100% is unavoidably evident. Well will be next to close.

Lestat hasn't even officially opened yet. I think Well will be gone by May.

re: Next show to close?

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that given its across the board rave reviews, WELL is going to stick around through the Tonys at least. Jane Houdysell is probably the favorite to win Best Featured Actress and the play will likely compete for Best Play, Director and Lead Actress. Now, whether a win or two will be enough to turn around its box office fortunes is a questionable, but the producers knew going in that it was going to be a tough sell with no celebrities on board (while every other play in town has major box office names involved), so it would be odd for them to throw in the towel even before the nominations come out in a just month's time.

SOUVENIR posted similar box office numbers a few months ago -- and didn't get nearly the same kind of positive reviews as WELL, except for Judy Kaye's performance -- and still ran almost three months.
