For a film version, I'd like to see Naomi Watts as Diana.

Wish I had seen that LOVE DMH!
Ok more seriously what about Audra and her husband? One of the best things about the Marin/Jason pairing was the novelty that they were actually married. It was very interesting to watch her husband observe her in that state - I also thought it was so cute how proud Jason was of Marin in interviews. He got to witness her deliver an excellent performance (particularly towards the end of the run. Her first performance was all head voice and wasn't the best).
If we're talking film, Naomi Watts if she can sing, but Toni Collette is a good choice too. Jim Carey has been my choice for Dan for a while, but he may be too old now...
Kyle MacLachlan and Andy Daly as the doctors.
I imagine Diana and Dan to be around the age of my parents, which is 55. Jim Carey is exactly that age. I don't think he's too old.
I thought of having MacLachlan play both doctors as is usually done onstage, but that would probably be hokey in the film version, and skews way too close to MachLachlan as the three roles he plays on Twin Peaks.

They got pregnant in college and the story takes place when the baby would have been 18, so not quite...

That's what I was going to point out. I think the characters are in their mid-40s at most.
I'd love for Carolee Carmello to get a shot at Dianna. She would be stunning.
AKB is so wrong for Gabe. I agree with Carolee Carmello for Diana.

This thread is making me laugh, because I am probably going to see Next to Normal this weekend (Broadway by the Bay in the San Francisco area). I have never seen it before. Now I'm going to leave before I read anything that spoils the show.
I completely agree with many of the names thrown out here for Diana - Carolee Carmello, Heather Headley, Lisa Brescia, Julia Murney, Rachel Bay Jones, Stephanie J. Block. All of them could be excellent. Funny how so many talented woman could easily pull this incredible difficult role off - at least, I think they could. She's a little too old for this role, but I think Charlotte D'Amboise could also be an inspired choice. I think Annaleigh Ashford, Lindsay Mendez and Lena Hall could also do it in a few years Austin P. Mackenzie could be a great Gabe too. Maybe Andy Karl as Dan.
And I love the suggestion of Eva Noblezada for Natalie and Jesse L Martin for Dan.

I would love to see Adam Pascal as Dan Goodman. The "edginess" of his voice and ability to play emotional characters seem perfect fits.
After seeing A Star Is Born, I'd love to see Gaga and Bradley Cooper as Diana and Dan in a film version in the next 5-10 years.
