IS HE DEAD?
It's brilliant, it's closing this weekend, and NEXT TO NORMAL is trash.

Posted: 3/5/08 at 2:29pmSkip them both, one's an amusing trifle, the other I've posted on at length elsewhere. Go see ADDING MACHINE, a brilliant musical downtown at the Minetta Lane.

IS HE DEAD?
It's a trifle, but Norbert's brilliant performance is well worth it.

Next to Normal! :)
ok, I'm biased and havn't actually seen Is He Dead haha. But, like Allie said, I just think NtN is an incredible, emotional show that is important for people to see.

Next to Normal ... a new musical that tackles a very difficult subject.
Is He Dead? is nothing you haven't seen before ... completely a "been there, done that" show. How anyone could think Is He Dead is brilliant baffles me ... its just so trite, silly, simple and unoriginal.

Next to Normal is about a woman who is not normal and her family trying to cope with it. I don't really want to give it away. But I thought it was pretty bad. I didn't think the musical numbers advanced the plot of the show therefore I wouldn't even consider it a musical but a play with music. But I highly reccomend IS HE DEAD?

They made a MAJOR change in Next to Normal tonight and it is spectacular ~ mush tighter than it was. I'd definitely say look into it.
(Though in the interest of disclosure I haven't seen Is He Dead?)

wait so should I bother looking into Next to Normal?
YES :) granted, there obviously seems to be some people who really didn't enjoy it. But I personally felt it was one of the better pieces of theater I've ever seen, and I saw it way back in previews when they were still gung ho making changes on an almost nightly basis!
It may not be a completely perfect show (yet), but it's incredibly emotional, moving, with quite possibly THE best performances I have ever seen. Truly. The cast is just brilliant.
I don't want to give much away about the plot because I think it's most effective if you go in knowing as little as possible, but head over youtube and do a search for the show. That'll give you some idea of the music. And if you like what you hear, you'll prooobably like the show :) Well, okay, it's possible you could like the score and not the show itself, but still.
