re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

A "healthy run" doesn't always equate "hit show." MANY Broadway shows run for several years and still lose their entire investment. MILLIE lost money on Broadway. As I believe did DAMN YANKEES.

ME AND MY GIRL and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN are probably the only shows that played the theatre that actually turned a profit (discrediting limited runs like PETER PAN which was part of a touring company).

Plus, there have been several shows like ANNIE 2 and PAPER MOON that booked the Marquis and then closed out of town.

I still say the theatre is cursed! :)

P.S. - No Producer on earth would "pick" the Schoenfeld over the Marquis.

Cursed ... with ugliness! Who the hell picked mauve for the color scheme?

Tale of Two Cities needs a house still, as well. It's a pretty big cast, so I see them going for a big house.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I am so brokenhearted about WIW closing...i can't believe anyone is talking about this. I feel like i just got a divorce and people want me to date right after i came back from filing for divorce. I can't even think of any show at the Marquis anymore. I was also very sad when La Cage closed last year. After winning the Tony for best revival!

Thank you! I'm so upset and I don't want it gone!!!!!!! Especially for cra to go in. The show was the best thing around.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

GO DROWSY!!!!!!!!!!!! (but will it be able to fill a theatre that big?)

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

A Chrous Line.

Remember The Palace has been dark for ages for Lestat and The Broadway was too dark for about 8 months before The Color Purple.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Sorry, but it's Drowsy. (Again, they might opt for the Schoenfeld if Chita closes).

About the Marquis Curse: I think bdwybug55 nailed it. The Marquis is such a barn you need huge crowds, consistently, to make any money there. Michael Bennett made the point with the shows that ran well but still lost money. It must cost a mint to run anything there. I really hope DC pulls it off, if indeed they go in there. Maybe it will; it's had great word of mouth.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I could see A Chorus Line at the Schoenfeld before I could see it at the big, impersonal Marquis...
[title of show] on Broadway. it's time. believe.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

The Daily News reported today that Drowsy has the Marquis.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I have the feeling that DROWSY will take the Marquis.

As for the person who said "A TALE OF TWO CITIES" for the Marquis: I have a feeling that HOT FEET will flop at the Hilton, and ATOTC will take over there.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Im with Piazzalight on this one. DROWSY CHAPERONE seems like a pretty safe bet at the Marquis! Sutton Foster back at the theatre that made her a star, in the most hyped out of town show since Dirty Rotten & Spamalot - in a classic 1920's musical - it just works.

Also agreed about TALE OF TWO CITIES...the Hilton seems like a good guess for it as well. HOT FEET certainly seems like a filler show to me if ever ive heard of one.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I had heard that Drowsy was waiting for the Schoenfeld to open up, but since WiW is closing, Im sure it will go into the Marquis. A Chorus Line is a pretty long time away, and I believe that Drowsy Chaperone would go in sometime in the near future and arent going to wait for Chita to close when there is an open theater. I have no doubts that Chita will close soon enough for ACL to take the Schoenfeld in the fall.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

sorry to sound ignorant but what is this drowsy chaperone you all speak of? i've never heard of it. also, previews for chorus line don't even start here in sf until the summer so it will be a while before it comes to broadway.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

The Drowsy Chaperone is a show originally from Toronto, that played in Los Angeles this past December to rave reviews. I flew from AZ to LA specifically to see it and it lived up to the hype. Very funny, original and entertaining!

anyone have this article they could post?

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I think DC going into the Marquis is like when Little Shop went into a Broadway house. I just think the show is too small and too intimate for such a big house. I think they'd be better just waiting for another theater to open up instead of rushing into it.

I was thinking exactly the same thing RentBoy. Annie Get Your Gun, Millie, La Cage, WIW were "big" shows. The Drowsy Chaperone is not. I would hate to see it fail just because of going to the wrong theater.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

They could wait forever and never get the right house for it. Especially now with every theatre booked and many shows circling to come in. WIW closing so suddenly is the only reason they're taking the Marquis.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

"With a number of shows waiting in the wings for a Broadway home, the Marquis Theatre isn't expected to stay vacant for long. "The Drowsy Chaperone," an homage to 1920s' Broadway musicals, is already rumored to be the next tenant."

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Where's that from yankee? i still think they should wait and see how some of the plays do, Barefoot or Ring of Fire might just totally bomb?

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Me and My Girl, the first show to open that theatre was a smash and enjoyed a long run. So much for the curse.
