re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Why does the Marquis have 'bad luck' with shows? It seems that there are so many shows that go through that theatre.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

There is actually a theatre legend that the MARQUIS is cursed -- based on the fact that two theatres were torn down to build the Marriott Marquis hotel. I'm sure someone else can elaborate on the story...

Thoroughly Modern Millie had a good run...

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I was so surprised that Millie ended that fast. I didn't even get a chance to see it on Broadway. I saw the tour and I thought it was great.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

How long was The Woman in White there for? When I was there in Oct. it hadn't even opened yet.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Millie was actually my first show that I saw in New York. I fell in love with it, and it still is one of my favorites. Can someone please elaborate on the legend about the Marquis?

Which theatres were torn down?
that's a really big mic...

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I'm crossing my fingers, too, for Drowsy Chaperone.

Does PIRATE QUEEN have a theatre in mind?
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Is it just me, or does Pirate King have flop written all over it? The days of the British blockbuster are long over.

"In the 1980s, the Gaiety, Astor, Helen Hayes (46th St), Morosco, and Bijou theatres were razed--amidst a storm of protest--to build the Marriott Marquis hotel and theatre. "

I'm still disappointed that WiW closed... Can't Chorus Line come in sooner or later?

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

They name a theatre after you, but if you are dead they take it away, I guess those with houses named for them should enjoy it now, one day it will be the "Shell Oil Theatre". I guess they will eventually name the Gershwin the "Menzel" too - and "Wicked" will still be playing there.
Rosie - You feel like opening another show, We have a dark house!!! (She could bring back "Taboo", LOL! Now that has never been done!)

It's a ways off, but remember Princesses? They're looking for a November opening, says IBDB.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I am so brokenhearted about WIW closing...i can't believe anyone is talking about this. I feel like i just got a divorce and people want me to date right after i came back from filing for divorce. I can't even think of any show at the Marquis anymore. I was also very sad when La Cage closed last year. After winning the Tony for best revival!

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I said in the WIW closing thread that I wouldn't be surprised if Drowsy Chaperone nabbed the Marquis.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

People forget that the first tenant at the Marquis was a hit (Me and My Girl). Don't forget that both the revival of Damn Yankees and Annie Get Your Gun had healthy runs as well.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

i think MILLIE had a healthy run too
but that is a cool legend! :P
so if the legend is true, neither CHAPERONE or CHORUS LINE can go there because i want them both to run for a long time! :)

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Chorus Line is a ways off yet. That would mean the Marquis being dark for a fair few months. Given the bottleneck of shows waiting for a theatre, I think it's a safe bet it won't be playing there. I have a theory about where Chorus Line will end up.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

The theater is just too big. It takes a mega popular hit like "Mamma Mia", "Wicked" and "Lion King" to really suceed in those huge theatres like the Gershwin, Marquis, Palace, New Amsterdam. Not that I am personally a fan of those shows but I definitely think that is part of the reason shows have a hard time lasting at the Marquis.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

I think it was "The Little Dog Laughed" that was looking to rent a Broadway theatre but there were no openings. Maybe they'll take WIW's place.

Not gonna happen.

re: Next up for the MARQUIS?

Drowsy is taking the Marquis, though I think they are hoping the Schoenfeld still opens up.

Times They Are A-Changing is the next tenant at the Palace.
