Nice But Semi-Cheap Hotels?

How much is "cheap"?

Will you be needing one bed or two? If you need two, then bidding on Priceline won't work for you.

If you don't want to stay in Manhattan, you can try hotels in Long Island City or in Brooklyn or Jersey City. But if you do this, you won't be able to go back to your hotel for change of clothing, rest, etc.

You can try looking on hotwire.com to see the rates for the dates you plan on being here. That will give you an idea as to whether that weekend is particularly expensive or not. Hotel room rates fluctuate. Since you haven't said when you are going to be here, who knows whether $340 is actually reasonable or not.

There are some cheaper hotels if you venture further from the theatre district. I have never stayed here, but The Gershwin Hotel had pretty good reviews. I got a room during Tony week for $129 per night for two standard twin beds and private bathroom on a website called EasytoBook. The hotel is located 7 E27th Street. Again this will be my first time, so other posters might know it better. There were some others in the same area (33-27sts) that had good prices but they were shared baths.

I think it ultimately depends on what you can live with. My partner and I are travelling from Sydney and looked for a reasonably priced hotel but in the end went with nicer hotels at a higher price as lots and lots of reviews for the cheaper ones were complaining of either bad service or being unclean.
July is peak time but I think you could do better than what you found pricewise.

the Gershwin is all-sold out for those dates except for dormitory rooms

the Pod Hotel has available rooms for the bunk pod, but you'll have a shared bath which I'm not sure your father will like

from what I can tell from looking at the internet websites, $340 isn't that unreasonable for 2 beds for that weekend; the catch is that you need 2 beds

A room with 2 twin beds is running for $159.20 F, $175.20 Sa, $143.20 Su

yeah, if your really research the internet on all the sites like hotwire, etc. you can get some incredible deals. i stayed in the Hudson , by Columbus Circle, for less than $200 last summer. in fact, i think closer to $150. Great hotel and service.

When I go to NYC, I stay at the Holiday Inn on 57th Street. It's about half the price of the theater district hotels, and it's only a 15-minute walk to Times Square.

I recommend the Herald Square Hotel on W 31st. No frills but comfortable. Book through their website.

The SALISBURY HOTEL, 212-246-1300 (123 W 57TH ST) is $219.00 per night for a standard room with two beds. It's on the nice block, across the street from Carnegie Hall between 6th & 7th Avenues. Hotel rates fluctuate (just like airline fares) but that is the rate right now for the weekend you're going.

I have stayed at this hotel in the past. It's location on 39th Street (btwn 8th & 9th) puts it at walking distance to most of the theatres. It was clean and the staff was friendly

I used to get good deals at the Skyline Motel - 10th Ave. at 49th or 50th St. Nice rooms, nice lobby and retaurant. Only problem is that the walk to The theatre district is a little iffy for young women alone. You'd have to take a taxi back after dark. No problem during the day, though.

The last time I was there was 2002 - I paid $99 a night. I know prices have shot way up since then.
