Totally disagree with you guys about casting for Nine. Bardem? Cruz? Do any of you remember when they use to put movie stars in movies?? Look at how quickly POTO (THE LONGEST RUNNING MUSICAL IN BROADWAY HISTORY) was in and out of the theatres. The film is forgotten already because of the two "unknown" leads. Could we please re-think the casting?
Cruz may not be a HUGE star, but she's hardly unknown.
Although I like the choices, Bardem and Cruz were chosen by Marshall and Weinstein, not us. You're not disagreeing with us (aka "you guys") so much as the Variety report on the casting (see first post).
Bardem and Cruz have both been nominated for leading acting Oscars, and are "hot" right now in Hollywood. Cruz has been all over the tabloids, glamour magazines, TV entertainment shows, and fan magazines ever since her association with Tom Cruise.
If not them, who? Any better suggestions, or just disagreement?

"Hot right now" doesn't always translate into "talented." Paris Hilton is "hot" right now. I guess my beef IS with the big decision makers. I just wonder why "you guys" think these names constitute a great cast.

Because both Bardem and Cruz have proved that they are great actors in other films. That's why we think it's good casting.
I think these names represent good casting because they are well regarded European film actors with a strong presence in American film. NINE will never have the potential box office gross of THE PRODUCERS or PHANTOM, so to bring their box office failure into the debate isn't entirely relative (these films also had problems beyond casting...)
The truth is, there are very few female movie stars at the moment who can open a film in terms of weekend box office. You could cast Adam Sandler and surround him with Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Cameron Diz and Drew Barrymore and the film would still be a long shot for box office return.
The only way NINE is going to have huge box office is if it wins awards or if they cut the music and add a couple of bridges being blown up.
So why not cast stars actually suited to the European aesthetic of the material?

"Blowing up bridges..."
*shouted ala Lilianne Montevecchi*
I LOVE IT!!!
Seriously, redmustang, are you just going to bitch, or do you have any actual ideas?
EDIT: And MB--That's my TOTAL DREAM CAST. OMG!
Well, I must confess as I typed that that I thought to myself -- I'd totally go see this cast in NINE even if they are about as Italian as a trip to Alberton's.
By the way, redmustang, it's not like BIG STARS equal big box office. Titanic and Lord of the Rings had no huge stars (when they opened). Hollywood names, yes... but mega-stars? No. Not even Leo DiCaprio, back then.
But they blowed up real good!
EDIT: ...and I buy all my s'ghetti at Albertson's! Chef Boyardee, too.

Sorry for being in a bitchy mood, best12bars. Just got home from seeing The Invasion.
Oh, GOD, that'll do it to anyone.
All is forgiven.

I would kill to see Meryl Streep as Lilianne Montevecchi.
Black hair, short hair.
Talk about intimidating.
Liliane LaFleur, you mean?
Yeah. WOW!
I totally say Liliane above and just copied it.
BRAIN LAPSE!

Streep would be great, if a bit too Miranda Pressley-ish. I basically consider Meryl Streep to be a genius but we all know she can do LaFleur and have a pretty good idea how HOW she'd do LaFleur, now why don't get an actress who is also right for the role but who'd be able to surprise us and fulfill us with her choices? (then again if someone can surprise me with good acting is Streep).
And americanboy, to me LaFleur and Montevecchi are almost interchangeable so it was sort of funny to see I'm not the only one.
I'm sorry, but since when is Penelope Cruz not a movie star? She may not be the first (or the 50th) name that pops up when you think about a big box office star, but she certainly has the star power, classical beauty, and acting chops that make up a star in my mind. Not sure if she'll do the film or not, but it can't be denied that she's perfectly suited for this movie.
Bardem is a great actor who really is hot-ish at the moment, with the help of the stars they're pursuing for the female roles, he'll be able to carry the film.
Too bad Streep is doing another musical, but she MAY look into this.
She does well in those scene-stealing featured roles, and Liliane is most definitely one of those parts.
But I think Streep is THE best choice for the role, but if she is unavailable, maybe a little MINELLI!
(kidding.)
Ya know... Liza wouldn't be half bad as LeFleur. She would have the camp value that I think Lilliane needs to have (perhaps not as over-the-top as Minnelli but a certain flair) and I think could pull of the accent. Her voice may be way too past it's prime but "Folies Bergeres" ain't the toughest song in the world and she really is a pretty damn good actress and interpeter of song. I don't think she would ever be cast but it could work. Anyone else think she would have made a good Louisa in the 80s?
I wonder if Binoche read for Lilliane. She seems a tad too young for the role. She should be about 10 to 15 years older than Guido... young enough to have had probably more than a one-night stand with Contini but old enough not to appear a contemporary of the three leading women. Of course, Chita and Eartha were both a little too old for the part but both were great in the revival.
Grace Jones would be one fierce Lilliane but then would she need that butch bodyguard? I'd think she'd be able to take care of herself.
If Marshall has said he wants to start filming in March when do ya think the picture will need to be cast? The suspense is already starting to kill me.
Z.
Liza would have been a good Liliane 20 years ago (if the character weren't French)when her dance skills were still in top shape. She certainly doesn't seem very European though.
If the film is shooting in March, they could easily be casting until February. A lot of deals aren't signed until fairly last minute because of existing schedules and negotiations.
I just don't like the idea of a LaFleur that is in her 70s or 80s like Rivera, Kitt, or Dench are.
I think Liza doesn't really belong in the world of NINE. I don't find her threatening enough to be the sort of terrifying producer Guido can't stop shaking off his mind. She may be able to sell the camp behind "Folies Bergeres" but not the first part of the number (the "when we had lunch you told me you couldn't wait to do a musical" dialogue) which is the whole reason for the number to even be there.
Jodie Foster as La Fleur!
(think about it before you freak out)
I'll still say Streep is the best choice.
Here are some names I will throw out there:
Glenn Close?
Diane Lane?
Nicole Kidman?
(Kidman looked fierce in the trailer for GOLDEN COMPASS.)
Just a few thoughts.
You know Foster speaks fluent French, has acted in French films, and has the accent down pat, right?
You know she's a double Oscar winner...
...and a star...
...and a good age for this character...
The big question would be can she pull off the song well enough... and can she play "comedic intimidation" well enough.
I believe that she could.
Did I mention she's also a film producer (like Liliane) in real life.
