re: Nine Casting

Haha. Yeah. There's one of he and Banderas, both naked. It's bizarre. Two naked Guidos.

re: Nine Casting

Oh God, there's only one Anita Morris. We lost her too soon.

re: Nine Casting

Funnily enough, though I initially saw Catherine Zeta-Jones as Luisa, Cotillard has grown on my immensely based on pictures alone. I completely agree about that sort of sad quality that her eyes portray, and she's beautiful and natural but not all-out stunning, so I can completely see Guido straying to flashier, sexier women.

Cruz strikes me as Claudia, but I can see b12b's point that she could be more between-the-sheets sexy than placed-on-a-pedestal ethereal. I truly think it could go either way. I'm warming to the idea of her as Carla, actually -- she's stunning in the posted pictures, but also sexy and a touch vulnerable. I could buy her as the vixen. I'm not 100% on her singing "A Call from the Vatican," but I easily picture her "Simple." I don't think that Zeta-Jones looks too old for Claudia given her career history with Guido, if that were the way it were to fall. Of course, it's likely that a lot of this speculation is premature.

And considering the names being circulated for these parts, I'd be shocked if we had to worry about any of Luisa, Carla or Claudia's songs being cut.

ETA: You know, even with the part shuffling, if any of these women are in the film, I'm more optimistic than when we were hearing that Katie Holmes was auditioning for Claudia.

I very much agree.
I still have trouble picturing Cruz singing "A Call from the Vatican." I don't see it.

re: Nine Casting

I absolutely agree with sweetsiren.

With some saying they possibly meant Jones for Luisa, where would that put Cotillard? Would that put Marion for Claudia or Carla?

I think Marion is capable of doing anything, so she could dance around in a barrel and would still be amazing.

re: Nine Casting

My only problem with Cruz is her accent. For some reason I always get SO distracted by her accent. I don't know, but I think I would rather Krakowski over Cruz as Carla. However, I think that if she is directed well, she'll give one hell of a performance.

Which makes me wonder what directorial approach Marshall will bring to the film... Will he use his stage idea like in CHICAGO, or will he use each song as a movie possibility for Guido. That could MAYBE work, and I would say it's rather likely.

Also, I CANNOT wait until next Oscar season. If this movie gets noticed, these women will be getting some serious attention. It's going to be fierce. Cruz, Zeta-Jones, whoever plays Liliane, and Cotillard all in one category. SOUNDS LIKE FUN!

(Although I have a feeling that whoever ends up playing Luisa, whether it be CZJ or Marion Cotillard, will be considered the lead actress.)

re: Nine Casting

The IMDB boards for Nine are heating up. On the one with the Variety article, someone posted after...

"Where are Renee, Nicole and Judi?
Can't believe this and will not go to the movie!"

The fact that people on that board were excited for Katie Holmes to be in the movie makes me want to throw myself in front of a train.

re: Nine Casting

I think I should take back saying that Marion isn't stunning. She's downright Claudia-esque in some pictures, having looked closer. But I think the ones posted here do prove that she could have a good look for Luisa, and her features are a little softer and more normal than I'd imagine in a movie star (which is entirely silly, because all of these women ARE movie stars -- I think that so much of it has to do with styling and makeup). Nice to see that she seems fine vocally, too.

re: Nine Casting

She did some singing in the film Les Jolies Choses, though I haven't seen it so can't judge it. There's a video of her and this French singer Jenifer(who looks like she would fit in this cast) singing Milord to promote La Vie En Rose. There's also video of her singing from Les Jolies Choses.

re: Nine Casting

I believe Cotillard and Jones may both be up for Luisa.
Cruz' accent will definitely work to her advantage in this movie.

re: Nine Casting

Yeah, her accent most likely will...

Well, I hope Jones is victorious... in getting Luisa.

Hopefully, Jones for Luisa, Cotillard for Claudia, and Cruz for Carla.

I guess...

re: Nine Casting

NYC4Life---Cate Blanchett for Liliane. What an interesting idea! I haven't seen anything she can't do yet... and the more I think about it, Liliane doesn't need to be "authentically life sized" or real on screen. She's very much a theatrical show biz creature... so even if Cate concocted a character that wasn't truly French, she definitely could win me over as an intimidating, forceful, slightly crazy, Follies-loving Diva film producer Lilianne!

She could pretty much convince me of anything she wanted to.

And I could see her belting her way through that big splashy number fearlessly, even if she couldn't sing a note, and it would be magnificent.

best12bars- That is what I was thinking when it came to the singing. If she gives the role the edge she does with everything she is given it will be incredible!

re: Nine Casting

Cate Blanchett as Liliane??? Now, that's an inspired choice!

re: Nine Casting

Knowing Cate, I could see her coming up with this whole internal "backstory" that Lilianne La Fleur is completely fabricated as a person. She's not French at all (can't you tell from that phony name?), but rather a poor girl who made good, and grew up to great success as Guido's eccentric producer. She loves him because he's a genius and most likely the only one she knows who's as crazy and "eccentrically artistic" as she is. I could see her as a completely nutty backer of his visionary movies... still intimidating, still a forceful businesswoman who has Guido under her thumb... but every bit as colorful and surreal as the memorable, fictional characters in his films.

And Cate would be brilliant, if she approached it from that angle. Plus, it would make more sense, coming from a woman like this in his life, that she would demand to have a musical as his next film---something straight out of the old Follies Bergeres. No "realistic" French film producer would ever suggest such a thing... and very few film producers that weren't crazy in the head themselves would put up with Guido's antics, lack of professionalism and disciplin, and "childish" approach to making movies.

It could work very well!

Let's get her on the phone!

I very much agree Besty! *in LaFleur's voice* "I LOVE IT!"
I can see her being beyond brilliant in the role.

I love it! I think that the fake french thing is so something Cate would come up with. She is outstanding in everything she does, takes risk, and owns each moment.

re: Nine Casting

Jennifer Garner would probably do a decent job with Carla, but I can picture her better as Luisa, ray.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

re: Nine Casting

I like the idea of Jennifer Garner in this film but I saw her for 5 years in ALIAS dressing up and putting on an Italian accent to spy on people. If she did this in NINE I would inevitably just think that Sidney Bistrow would at some point take the costume off, pull her guns out and start shooting everyone to get some secret Rambaldi code...(dorky I know).
Seriously speaking, I think Garner is too young-looking for Luisa, from the excellent work she did in ALIAS I think she'd be great as the sexy yet vulnerable Carla. She's not my number one choice but I she could be interesting.

re: Nine Casting

You know what I think would be great... if some of these other ladies mentioned, like Garner, Anouk Aimee, Isabella Rossellini, Leslie Caron, Grace Jones... even some OBC cameos from Montevecchi or Karen Akers... would turn up in the "film with in a film" of CASANOVA. It's going to be very surreal anyway with him posturing around (as Casanova) surrounded by an alternate universe of his real life. Why not have it be a who's who of international divas?

All cameos... but wouldn't that make a hugely memorable sequence?
