Zelwegger also has a close relationship with the Weisnteins and Rob Marshall. She's also won an Oscar for a Weinstein movie and has had a better track record at the box office. Why don't they let her pick whatever role she wants and cast around that?
I just don't buy it. Not for this project. That article also says they are trying to "woo" Zeta Jones. Wouldn't they cast her first and than "woo" the others
I think that Zeta Jones is not vulnerable enough to play Claudia and Luisa. I've never seen her project the qualities I would say are essential to those parts.
"the romantic comedy she did with George Clooney wasn't a hit either"
It is called intolerable cruelty and it was directed by joel coen. None of the coen brother films are huge box office smashes. it was the third highest grossing film from them. More money than Fargo and The Big Lebowski!
"think that Zeta Jones is not vulnerable enough to play Claudia and Luisa."
Have you seen her as the wife in traffic, she does a great job in that. You also have to remember she does not do that many movies and is often type cast as the bitch or the diva. She has a range and really does not get to use it. When she did her tv movie and minis thing over seas in the 90's she got to play diffrent range of characters. Try to get your hands on Catherine the Great, it is an A&E mini and she does a wonderful job. The movie and historcal stuff is not amazing but she shows she is an actress.
"It just seems odd to me that she'd be allowed to pick her role out of a dozen options. Especially when she's hardly right for all of them."
Do some research on bob and harvey weinstein, they are the closest thing to the old houllywood studio system and they will let Zeta-Jones pick.

Truth be told, though CZJ is a box office draw, I think most people even remotely interested in a film like this would rather see Jones portray a diva or a snob than to be the forgotten housewife. I think it's more of a question of what the general public will want, and they know that. They also know whether CZJ for whatever role they're wooing her for.
Regardless of what that article said, the role Catherine Z. Jones is mainly being pursued for is Luisa.
If Catherine Z. Jones is such a box office draw why hasn't she had a hit in 5 years? Mind you, I find her to be incredibly talented, as exciting on screen as it gets, and I jumped off my seat when her name was announced at the Oscars.
Also, Luisa is not a forgotten housewife. I mean, she is much more than that. First of all, Guido and Luisa have a great connection, they also still have a sexual chemistry going on, and Luisa may let Guido get away with cheating and whatnot, but she's way smarter than he is and she is always aware of what's going on. The scene when she tells Guido to buy Carla some good clothes so she doesn't look so trashy (don't remember exactly how the scene goes) is a classic example of Luisa's strength. I think Zeta Jones would be able to work the role.

What do you mean by hit? All of the movies she has been in since chicago had great opening weekends. All of the movies were far from flops. The real question is "why does she not get better movie offers". Name a female star you think is bigger box office draw. Most people go see a movie because of hype now and not who is in it.
Plus- Ocean's 12 and The Terminal were really big hits.

Let's put it this way in the reality of Hollywood (isn't that an oxymoron?)... Zeta-Jones is a bankable movie star. She is widely known all over the world. She won an Oscar for a MUSICAL film, and only one other actress (Jennifer Hudson) has done that in the past 35 years. CZJ's musical grossed 180 million domestically.
When you're wisely and carefully casting your new movie musical based on a 25 year old Broadway show, based on a foreign film/art house hit, with limited commercial appeal on face-value alone... She's the very first door you're going to knock on.
And they would let her play GUIDO if she wanted to.
Reality check, guys.
CZJ was cast as Roxie, I believe, then decided to play Velma because she wanted to sing ALL THAT JAZZ.
CZJ was cast as Roxie, I believe, then decided to play Velma because she wanted to sing ALL THAT JAZZ.
She should've pulled a Whitney Houston. When they tackled her to play Deena Jones back in the days, she was demanding that she got to sing Deena's AND Effie's songs...
Now, Zeta Jones as Guido Contini, I can see it. Why not make it a gender-bending production? Jones as Guido with Matt Damon, George Clooney, Jude Law, John Goodman (as Saraghina), and Clive Owen in the supporting roles...THAT will get people to see it.
Anyways, I definitely see your point, Best12, and you're right. She IS a bankable star. I'm not sure what the discussion is about anymore, I'd love for Zeta Jones to be part of this movie. Apparently all of us disagree in the roles she should play, but interestingly enough we all agree that she fits well in the world of NINE, I think that's the reason they'd allow her to pick her role because regardless of which one she ends up playing, she'll have detractors and supporters.
Just for fun! My picks:
Liliane: Meryl Streep
Luisa: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Claudia: Anne Hathaway/ Laura Benanti
Carla: Marisa Tomei
Saraghina: Sara Ramirez
Guido's Mother: Sophie Loren
Not bad choices.
If I was completely in charge of casting (HA!), I'd pick:
Guido- Antonio Banderas or Javier Bardem
Luisa- Toni Collette or Catherine Z. Jones
Carla- Jane Krakowski, Marissa Tomei, Salma Hayek, Kate Winslet, how about Jennifer Garner?
Claudia- Penelope Cruz
Saraghina- Sara Ramirez
LaFleur- Juliette Binoche, Demi Moore
Stephanie Necrophorus- Donna Murphy
Guido's Mother- Isabella Rossellini
Oh, Toni Colette needs to be in this. But I don't she and Bardem would work well together.
Maybe she could play Guido's mother. Although, that part is written for a soprano.
Thirty-five year old Toni Collette as Guido's Mother???
Well, I don't know about Guido's mother. I think NINE is such a beautiful song, although it's chances of making it into the film are iffy.
Sorry. That picture is huge.
OH!
Helen Mirren for Liliane?
How about Maria Bello as Carla?

Ha, sheets and all.
I wish Mary Stuart Masterson were a bigger film star so she could reprise her turn as Luisa, though Marshall probably wouldn't cast her to stay away from the stage production as MichaelBennett theorized about the reason why Banderas isn't playing Guido.
Do you all love my av?
It took me a while to find the perfect pictures.
Google Bardem's name and see what the second or third picture that comes up is.

Are you talking about the nude pictures? Javier Bardemn has done many nude scenes in movies.
