"I doubt most of the people on BWW, particularly the vicious ones are actually in the business. Most people on Broadway and Off are actually pretty nice." -jrb actor

I completely agree with jrb. I find the overwhelming majority of my colleagues to be generous and great people to work with. I've never understood the general negativity on this board, and it's a reason I spend little time here.

"This is the internet. The whole point is to be vicious." See, I don't get that at all, roninjoey, but I commend you for trying to be more positive.

"For example, MAMMA MIA! has outstanding music, but the script blows. It's been on Broadway since 2001 and is still getting at lease 90%. I think it's had a nice run - now it is time to free up the theatre for a new show." Not sure if agree about the outstanding music or the script blows parts, but I don't get this, either. There are theatres availiable. Why close a show (even a mindless piece of fluff) if people want to see it?

Good luck, and welcome, Peace. There's lots of good guys out there. The nastier ones are just noisier.

After this semester as a Production Assistant with my college's theater department, I don't think I WANT a job with a Broadway play. Not even sure if I want to be in the audience after this month either. Don't worry, I won't criticize any Broadway shows though.

Dean: Can I tell you something? Lorraine: That depends on what it is. Dean: I think you're really really pretty. Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.

The Broadway community is by far the best thing to be a part of in my opinion. Great people, nice people, not always honest, but then again, who is...

Ghostlight2, that was pretty uncool of you to take my statement, which was clearly intended as a joke as it was extremely hyperbolic, out of context to criticize it. I proceed to follow it up with some very positive statements about how I agree that people get too judgemental, but allowing that all people are prone to do it, including myself, and yourself, as you proved by posting that at all. While I'm not sitting here crying about it, I'm just saying that it was a little mean of you to take a potshot like that.

This thread is getting pretty pathetic with people piping up to talk about how nice and non judgemental they are and patting themselves on the back. I'm sure you've all had bad things to say about something or someone or other.

When will we all just accept that

1)Everyone has an opinion.
2)Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
3)Not everyone's opinion will be the same.

And finally, in the grand scheme of things, if thirty Broadway houses played to an estimated average of 1,000 people each, that's 30,000 people a night, or 210,000 a week. Compared to those numbers, the opinions represented here are but a miniscule representation of everyone who sees theatre.

What if someone has a job in a Broadway play? Or an off-Broadway musical? Should they respond, or is this just for those in a Broadway musical?

Edited. I see Jerby already made this point. So ... yeah! What he said.

There are probably a lot of young kids posting (no age of majority here) judging from the syntax sins. And there are probably more than a few professionals dropping in. It's a mix.

Personally, I have nothing against anyone stating their views and opinions - that way I get to blather on as well.

But I think the Broadway Deathwatch threads (which show will close next?) are counter-productive and sad.

And as for long-running shows vacating, if all the theaters are filled, someone may get the novel idea of building a few more, or converting old movie houses, of which one or two are still existant.

I'll apologise to you, roninjoey, but in all honesty, I did take your statement seriously as there was nothing there to indicate you were making a joke. All I did was say,

"I don't get that at all, roninjoey, but I commend you for trying to be more positive".

No insult intended, I wasn't being sarcastic, but rather absolutely sincere. You'll just have to take my word for that. Sorry my remark was misconstrued.

There's no need for hatefulness on this board. Criticism? Yes. But, I think it should be respectful.

I think too many people get caught up in cattiness. Makes em feel better about themselves or something.

Well said JRB. While I enjoy posting on this board, there are some users that I would love to slap. Updated On: 4/17/06 at 08:26 PM

as one of the "younger kids" who posts (i'm 17)...i can understand the reason a lot of the "older" posters would get irritated with a lot of the posts, but i think a lot of us are respectful with our opinions, posts, etc.

i, personally, know a lot more about broadway than just wicked and rent and mamma mia -- but i don't claim to know everything AT ALL (some students seem to think they're omnicient with this kind of stuff).

i love hearing about productions that i don't know a lot about, since i can't get to NYC very often. i take everyone's opinions with a grain of salt, which i think a lot of people don't do enough, but overall, i enjoy the fact that i can learn so much from so many posters who know about different aspects of theatre that i'm not as well-versed in.

and for those professionals who post, thanks. even if a lot of times we don't know that you're working, etc. it's nice to know that information sometimes comes from a first-hand source here.

that is not to say, of course, that non-professionals don't know anything. just to when it comes to the "business", first-hand experience is nice to hear :)

First of all, being in a Broadway play or musical or working on a show doesn't elevate your opinion above anyone else's. Being in an industry doesn't make you an expert any more than not being in one precludes you from being an expert. Having said that, I get what you're saying. Alot of the negative stuff can sound like sour grapes from a bunch of theatre wannabes (that's a shout-out to my homegirl in lieu of throwing shade)but alot of it is justified.

Alot of theatre sucks, alot of tv sucks and alot of movies suck. People who are in these industries know that what they do is mercilessly scrutinized, reviewed, what have you and the price you pay for being the recipient of that criticism is fame and fortune in whatever form that may be. I'm not saying people in the arts deserve it, but they have to expect it and deal with it.

Except Melanie Griffith. She deserves it.

Poor Melanie. She tried. She tried very hard. And I suppose she succeeded, didn't she? The theater was full, wasn't it? I give major praise to someone who steps out of their realm and ties something different and has the guts to do it in public. Now there are those who say she had no right to be up there, performing such a complex and demanding role. So don't go. Don't buy aticket. I'd love to find out how many people asked for refunds.

What strange logic, Marshmallow. Do you have any idea about the number of weeks each year that most actors don't work in their chosen profession? It's not reasonable to believe that for each show that closes, another one will immediately take its place and create immediate re-employment. So, while you don't see a problem if a show that you don't like closes, you might want to think about the performers and tech people who will be out of work. While I don't like Lupone, Peters or Buckley or The Wedding Singer, I don't hope for failure for them.

Hey "Peace," no shade intended, if you are recently in a show on or off-broadway, and you want to shout it from the rooftops, don't be coy. It's annoying.
