Is it just me or is WONDERFUL TOWN not the hysterical show that the critics say it is. Although Donna Murphy did give it her all just about found about as much success as possible, the show itself was not that funny. I noticed that the audience, as a whole was not laughing all that much and Donna Murphy didn't even get much of a standing ovation like most stars like her often get.
I completely agree- I don't see what is so wonderful about the show...besides Donna Murphy (who was quite good, but not phenomenal)
I wanted to love it, or at least like it very much but it was just okay.

Yes, I agree some of the jokes were a little too repetitive. The score and Donna Murphy are what makes the show work.
What about Jennifer Westfeldt?
Really? I loved the music, the score, the acting, Gregg Edelman,
Donna Murphy.
It was romantic, fun, silly, touching.
I thought it was much more then wonderful.
Actually it was tied as my favorite musical this year.
Wonderful Town and Q were my favorites then Wicked in that order.
Actually the order:
1. Q
2 Wonderful Town
3. Caroline Or Change
4. Wicked

Oh yes, sorry, I didn't mean to discount Jennifer.
I'd also like to know how Jennifer Westfeldt is...I haven't heard much about her.
I loved Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen. She has a very nice voice and she's lovely and is believable as the irrestible Eileen. I loved her in Kissing Jessica Stein also.
Goodness, for the last time, people!
New York is a CITY! Jeez.
Jennifer was wonderful she has a beautiful voice and she is a great actress and very pretty.
There is not a bad thing i could say about the show.
Uh oh, Jrb__actor will dump on me again, and I've already ticked him off this week... I posted a couple of times on this, but the show just isn't all that funny. I missed Roz Russell's way with Ruth big time. Only Ken Mandlebaum has come out and talked about how Murphy simply isn't the comic tornado the role requires. Accomplished, charming, a better singer (especially in act two) to be sure. But is she really screamingly funny? The Carol Burnette sketch material in Edelman's office? It's pretty tepid stuff, heavy-handed at times. And Edleman ... for my hundred bucks, a man who needs the 101st reason to be lost. I just don't get him, in a romantic context. He and Donna are about as exciting ... well, as they look in that tv commercial. There's nothing wrong with this revival -- but other than the orchestra on stage (the REAL star), blasting Bernstein's music (and often seriously crowding the actors, requiring "Conga" to be crammed on the apron, when it should explode and fill a stage), what's worth the money? Or thrilling enough to justify its existence? If all of you adore it, great. It's pleasures are legit, but it's still summer stock -- no, Encores -- thrown on a big stage for big prices.

Auggie,
Roz Russell is dead. Deal with it.
Conga and My Darlin' Eileen are the two best numbers in the show. I agree with the fact that Conga! is defintely hurt by orchestra being onstage. I mean when Ruth climbs the fence it looks like shes climbing the orchestra from where i was (dead center)
Both numbers work well but would've worked better with more room. Not every number should be cramped(most don't work as well in my opinion like the other great numbers Christopher Street and Pass the Football(both are great though))
I think i was just rambling on too long no matter what the show is great,
Oh, Dolly, Now come on, you're ever biased. After all, Carol Channing replaced Roz in WT -- remember? -- and couldn't sell tickets.
oooh I smell a bitch fight coming on between Auggie and Dolly!!!!
I'm placing my bets on Dolly (sorry Aug). Dolly is one tough, butch man!
Go Augster!!!
I loved every second of that show and thought Donna Murphy had great comedic chops...

That kooky Corine and her ties again!
Kooky Corine,
I love them both. But if i had to choose i would pick Q!
I'm afraid it'll take something far more stimulating than this WT to inspire a bitch fight in me. Anybody who loves it, who swoons over La Donna -- you win, you win. Anyway, how can I fight? I'm in my neck brace this week.
I was just listening to Arthur Schwartz on WOR, he does a food show and talks about things happening in the New York area, theatre, restaurants, etc. Anyway, he said he saw "Not so Wonderful Town" last night. He thought it was excrutiatingly dated and mediocre. He was annoyed that he wasted all that money. Updated On: 2/25/04 at 12:24 PM
Go Auggie!
I liked wonderful town a lot...but it did take some time to build up any sort of energy and at times, Donna Murphy was the only one who seemed to realize that it was a musical COMEDY...also, to be true...I thought Jennifer Westfeldt (who I loved all over in Kissing Jessica Stein) was really a bit to bland for Eileen...despite her wonderful voice...s'all I got
I bought 2 tickets for Tuesday.
I can't wait to see it again. Come on people go and see the show it is marvelous. I AM ON ROUND TWO.
