But my issue with the pevert crying is...is it for show?, or will it enhance this director's staging?
I don't think it's necessary, particularily, but I just feel like there's this overzealous backlash at the incling of it, that's all.
I love all the 12 year olds in this thread who are all up in arms at the thought of nudity "EEWWW No naked people is perverted, eww naked bodies"
Hey kids.....never go see HAIR....just a tip
I think a total full frontal would be a bit distracting but just a bit of skin and if its not to up in your face it isn't terrible, but if you don't have it, it doesn't effect the storytelling

Wow...this thread seems to be filled with....REPUBLICANS!
I think that it would not work, unless he has a different take on the play, it is playing in manhatten 12 years ago or unless it is Company the adult movie.
I don't like that people are referring to gratuitious nudity as "sick" and "perverted." It's not needed more than anything, but a naked body is not "sick." "Barcelona" naked would be distracting and not needed.
Go for It!
They are having sex, right?
Think PASSION,
The difference between sex and love is
a common thread in COMPANY
so I think it is just fine.
Bobby is almost always at least shirtless in that scene
except in the new revival which is just as well...
I know, I know, it doesn't matter, but Esparza, would it kill you to open a couple of buttons?

I do not think nudity onstage is gross at all if it is used in the right way. If there was total nudity in some scenes it would be unnecessary and distracting.

What about Harry Potter in Equus?
How will the 12 yr olds "handle" that?

If they handled Firth I am sure they can handle Radcliffe.
It's not appropriate, but it's not sick either...
Ad I agree with LuvtheEmcee
All of you who think the nudity would be un-necessary, do you even know the scene in question?
Act II Scene 2, Robert has brought April home. He is on the make and really turning on his seductive charms. After they exchange their "worst thing that ever happened to me" stories they begin making out. (The other wives not involved in the scene "pop" into the bedroom to offer their Brechtian commentary.) Soon Robert and April are undressing in prelude to having sex. (The act is covered by the spectacular "Tick Tock" dance where we overhear their comments and thoughts.) This leads into the "Barcelona" scene/song where April is getting dressed to go.
I can't think of very many plays or musicals where the addition of full nudity is necessary but in this case it would seem totally natural. (In most productions I have seen the undressing usually only goes as far as underwear - and note to directors: Colored and fancy boxer shorts as are worn these days were NOT in use in 1970. Plain white boxers or plaine white jocker shorts only!)
Why to Americans have such hang-ups about nudity? It's no big deal!!
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
"unless it's in script, don't do it"
I don't think the script nor the score called for the actors to play the instruments either...
How are those two things remotely comparable? Yes, they're both categorized as directorial choices, but come on. One is absolutely trivial compared to the other.
For the record, I don't agree with "if it's not in the script, don't do it," because if you have to adhere THAT tightly to what's written, then the director's job is considerably scaled down.
i agree with ya emcee to a point. but some shows ya dont need it, and it there to get "buzz" for it, on a side note in all performance versions of Tenn Williams plays there is huge note
"NO NUDITY WILL BE ADDED UNLESS IT IS IN THE SCRIPT " or something to that effect dont remember the excact wording
Well, playwrights do things like that fairly often, don't they? It's not exactly uncommon to put notes about what to do and not to do; plus, there's the idea that playwrights who add a lot of stage directions are really just trying to direct their own plays.
yeah but changing "so and so crosses stage left to get shirt" to "so and so crosses stage left back ass naked and gets shirt " are two diffrent things
Heh, agreed.

I can't see a place that full nudity is nescessary unless they left the bed in the "Barcelona" scene or they do it on the floor. What's the point? You want them to be full frontal to show what message? Robert finally free of repressing his relationship with April? Having undressed on the bed already give this message, so why stepping on the line? Even though they fully undressed before they get to bed, for such a short time? Again, what's the point for a 1 second nudity. If you want to do nudity, make it at least 5 seconds with a full frontal! That will be something!
um...no. not acceptable in theatre.
Umm... TWSFan4Ever, you obviously have not seen much "theatre" if you are of the belief that nudity is not acceptable in theatre??? Honestly...

It's not nescessary. There are those who just want to see how much they can get away with. Sick.

It seems like you're trying to insult our intelligence. OF COURSE we are familiar with the scene. If we weren't why would we even share our opinion. Seriously.
PASSION was different. The opening is one of the most beautiful things I have seen in a musical. It's too bad Marin had to cover up for the filmed version. But it's not like they showed penis and vagina. Maybe a boob here or there in the Bobby and April scene. But I don't need penis and vagina, especially when I'm trying to enjoy a show with my parents.

Nudity is not necesary in any play, period. In my opinion, there are some people who have odd ideas of what Broadway plays are all about.
