I'd have to give it to Christine Ebersole, just because she and I are married, but Alfre is a good runner-up.

WOW...speechless. Pajama Game over Sweeney Todd? I enjoyed both of them, but I was sure Sweeney had it in the bag. Oh well...I guess Tony voters like fluff?

And I think it's hysterical because
1) I think this production of Sweeney is quite good in some aspects, not so good in others and ultimately a bit overrated. I actually predicted that Pajama Game had a decent shot at winning because I bet that while voters respected this Doyle production and knew enough to publicly express positive things about it, I've found in 30+ years of Tony watching that when voters mark their ballots they usually actually vote for the show and performances that they really enjoyed the most -- not necessarily the ones that got the best reviews. And I just knew more of them had a better time at Pajama Game than Sweeney, so I think it's funny that my theory bore out again this year.
2) I find it HYSTERICAL how upset and caught up some of you get over these things. If you don't have a personal stake in this -- like actually being nominated yourself or personally knowing someone nominated -- why on earth would you let any of this bother you? What does Sweeney winning or not have to do with your life?

I don't know. Personally, I've never had a problem with people being emotionally invested in things. Seems rather human to me.
