OVER HERE!

Don't you think it's time that Encores! did a production of this show? It had a very enjoyable Big Band-sounding score from The Sherman Brothers (You know, the guys that did the score for the Disney movie about a flying governess). Yes, the original was mainly a vehicle for the two surviving Andrews Sisters, but there were many enjoyable performances, notably Tony-winner Janie Sell, triple threat Samuel E. Wright (who would later play Willie's father in THE TAP DANCE KID), and some guy named John Travolta. My favorite songs are "My Dream for Tomorrow", "Since You're Not Around", and "Don't Shoot the Hooey To Me, Louie". The Sony Broadway CD is still available, so you should pick it up while you have the chance!

Hehe. THere's so many cast recordings on my "need to get" list that it isn't funny.

re: OVER HERE!

I loved this cast album when I was a little girl...Look at the cast, not only the two Andrews Sisters...Ann Reinking, John Travolta, Treat Williams (still love him!) and Marilu Henner...just to name a few!

re: OVER HERE!

Started out as with the title Victory Canteen

I saw this show & loved it & the big band sound. I play the CD often. Dyamite overture. The Andrew sisters were gracious @ the stage door

re: OVER HERE!

This is indeed a fun show. Love the number "The Good-Time Girl", Although we all seemed to remember it as the V.D. Polka, lol!! Given our national and global circumstances, they should get this one up - and SOON!

re: OVER HERE!

jimmirae I was just thinking the same thing!!!

I was going to post "Good time girl" as my favorite song but all I could think of was the "VD POLKA" and I thought... I can't post that... what is the name of that song again! Thanks for the answer! re: OVER HERE!

re: OVER HERE!

Ohmigod! How could I forget a song that rhymes "sock us" with "streptilcaucous" (sp?)? My favorite line from that song is "She'll give you a sore like you've never had before!" LOL

re: OVER HERE!

My school did this last year! We had a very small cast, so I (being a lowly freshman) didn't get in... But anyway. I agree "Good Time Girl" is my FAVORITE song from the show.

Encores! should def. do this!
I get lost, unless, of course, I'm getting found.

re: OVER HERE!

Truth be told, I had to start singing it to remember the OFFICIAL title, I always called it the V.D. Polka, LOL!! Great Song!!

re: OVER HERE!

If a producer could sign 2 BIG names, I bet this could actually run again. How about Liza & Bernadette??

re: OVER HERE!

I'm a huge fan of The Sherman Brothers, so naturally I enjoy this show. I found a copy of the cast album at the library and found it fun to listen to. I would love to see it revived in some capacity in the future.

re: OVER HERE!

Encores...yes definitely. Broadway revival...I don't think so. The show as previously stated was built around the Andrew Sisters. Their impact as performers during World War 2 was still identified with audiences at the time to the extent that after the curtain calls the 2 sisters came out and performed a medley of their hits. Today their core audience is either dead or in their eighties and nineties. In fact when "Over Here!" was to go on tour after the Broadway run, there was a salary dispute amongst the sisters and as a result the plan to tour the show was scrapped. Without the 2 remaining sisters appearing, the producers had no interest in touring. Another fact to keep in mind is that the show only ran 341 performances. With today's costs in mounting a show and the need to have a healthy run to recoupe costs, I doubt anyone would touch a vehicle that initially had such a short run. "Encores" yes..."Revival" seems highly unlikely to me.

re: OVER HERE!

Dimitri is right on all scores.

I saw OVER HERE twice on Broadway. It was one of the most perfectly pitched shows, with not a moment that didn't fit beautifully into the overall scheme. The pastiche material certainly owes a lot to the original hits of the Andrews Sisters, but it took some doing on the part of the Shermans to compose an entire score in that mode. They succeeded.

Also wonderful in the original: Phyllis Somerville.

re: OVER HERE!

Love this cast album! I agree Encores! or an Off-Broadway mounting would indeed be sublime.

re: OVER HERE!

I'm shocked you can still order it. So many OBCs are rare if you can ever find them anymore. Great Score...even if you bought it just to hear "The Good-Time Girl", LOL!!
(There was an older queen in New Hope we called "Ma" that used to do that song all the time, It was a hoot then too!)

re: OVER HERE!

Love this show. It was produced by the (then) married same couple who produced GREASE, and that's why so many of the "creatives" are the same.

I know a couple of sisters who are always looking for work who could do it...Lorna and Liza!
