I completely agree that Sondheim is UNDERrated. When a local college was doing A Little Night Music, I asked numerous theater friends to go with me. (All of which replied, "What is A Little Night Music?") After telling them that it was by Sondheim, most of them replied with "Who's that?" I was in utter shock. I then went forth explaining many of the shows he had written lyrics and/or music to. The only ones that they recognized were West Side Story, Into The Woods, and Gypsy.
With Company being my favorite show, I abruptly burned numerous copies of the Original Cast Recording and scattered them about my friends. Hopefully, they'll gain a new and appreciative understanding for the genius Sondheim is.
-On another note, I think a very over-rated musicals are Cats, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera. As Stewie said to Peter from Family Guy, "You...you are the worst thing to happen to musical theater since Andrew Lloyd Webber!"
I'm as jumpy as a virgin at a prison rodeo!
