If anyone here is a regular viewer of Conan, you know that there is a hilarious sketch about "New Off-Broadway Shows" where they are musicals of recent news events. SOO hilarious!
The ones last night were "To Catch a Predator-The Musical!", "Spacin' Out" (about the whole astronaut thing), "Goin' Nowhere Slow" (about JetBlue) and many more. I think it is so genius! I want to know what other people think of this great sketch spoofing the whole Off-Broadway genre.

Off-Broadway isn't a genre.

I love those bits too. I saw one in fall of '05 where they did "Oprah The Musical" with Tom Cruise (played by Wedding Singer ensemble member Nick Kenkel) jumping on her couch, an 80s tribute show featuring a musical version of the "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial, "This Week's Episode of 'Lost'", "Stomp" featuring Abe Vigoda, and a 3-hour musical of the Thong Song - "The Song of Thong". Funny stuff.

"Off-broadway is a location"

Not really. There are several Off-Broadway theaters located right in the heart of the Broadway district. "Off-Broadway" is merely a contractual designation that has more to do with the types of the union contracts being used for a given show and the size of the theater housing the show than anything else.

Oh god, those are amazing. I missed the newest one but my favorites would be This Week's Episode of Lost and Infomercial: the Musical. And there was another one parodying the 80s commercials with the old lady falling is pretty great too.

hehehe LOL! I loved CUP! The Musical - spoofing STOMP. So much hilarious stuff. I guess I think of Off-Broadway as a genre because the musicals are generally "underground" ideas and not really mainstream. The budgets are low and the actors are unknown. Not that that makes them bad or anything, but I guess it's all left to one's personal opinion. For example, "indie" is a music genre, until that artist makes it big, then they are known as "alternative rock".

Does anyone remember any more great ones??

LOL I loved "Letters from Iwo Jima - The Musical!" it was literally just guys doing kicks in big envelope costumes with japanese writing on them. = )

WOW! That's gotta be one hilarious box of doorknobs! Of course, there's always the possibility that you're humorless, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

No I have lots of humor, believe me! I tend to find more humor in people who don't try so hard to be "funny"...they just are by being themselves. I don't find his humor to be very smart - I just think it's marginal humor and a bunch of sillyness.

Again, that's just me. I still watch to try to see him in a different light...but no luck yet.

that's the point - he is supposed to be silly. He said that that has always been his sense of humor and he is just being himself when they do those sketches. I think he is the funniest man alive!

And I know I have posted this many times but I really think he should be in a Broadway show. He is such an amazing singer and has stage presence - and tap dances. Yep he is pretty much the world's perfect man if there ever was one. In fact in 2000 he was offered the role of Harold Hill in The Music Man revival but had to turn it down because of Late Night. I would have walked around the world 3 times to see that!

He was breathtaking in "Trouble" at the Emmys - I hope he knows how good he really is. Maybe just 2 months off of Late Night to do a Broadway show - I'd be fine with that.

I've mentioned this in other threads but I am making a list of the roles I think he could play really well on Broadway! Those other threads have gone to waste because I failed to find any fellow Conan lovers - but thank God I've found some now. Add on to the list if you think of a part that would be great for him!

Billy Flynn in Chicago
Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone
Wizard in Wicked
Bert in Mary Poppins

PS: Is anyone else totally feeling "Horny Manatee - The Musical"???? LOL = )

"The Phantom of the JuiCER!!!!"

ah, I remember that one...

He really is a genius in his own right. His comedy is so fresh and so un-scripted I'm sure most would agree his sense of un-scripted comedy has not been scene since the days of Johny Carson. He's a brilliant improv. artist and has a wonderful talent for sketches. He's also a wonderful musician and does have a voice (beneath that 6 foot 5 girly-man body of his... :-P ) He is a breath of fresh air compared to Leno and Letterman on the late night line-up....

..and yes, he would do wonderfully on Broadway, but in his own one-man show. I don't think it would be to great for him to step into the shoes of a present role...but if ever a REALLY good one came along, I'll be on line!

totally - like a Martin Short type of thing would be incredible. Maybe about Conan himslef, like his rise to fame and how things were tough at the beginning. Actually some college kids have created a movie-musical. Pretty fantastic stuff! Here's the link: http://www.conanmusical.com/watch/

and just in case you missed his Emmy brilliance!

So you want to know what people think, but only people who agree with you???

Okay, Phantom of the Juicer for example...just please explain to me why that is funny? Honestly - I wish I saw where the humor is. Help me out.

to explain phantom of the juicer -

one of the off-broadway shows was "infomercial! the musical" and it was these 2 guys in cheesy sweaters talking/singing about a new product, and when the product appears you hear the classic POTO song and this guy dressed as phantom singing "I am the phantom of the juicer!" it was the best. if you don't find the humor in that than you need an elbow transplant

secondly, when I asked what "people" think I meant the cool people that have been agreeing with me about conan's awesomeness or anyone else that has something positive to say. PLEASE NO NEGATIVITY OR HATERS IN THIS THREAD!!

I think Conan himself is hilarious when he isn't scripted, like when he just kind of talks after his monologue, or when he warms up the crowd before tapings, or when he does interviews. But I think the overall writing for his show (for the sketches, monologue punchlines, and feature segments and stuff) can be pretty lame.

i agree that he is best when improvising - but I also think that the writing is genius. "Inspired silliness" I guess would be the correct term.
