...for those who didn't get enough of Jim Steinman with DOTV, look no further for his return! Personally, after 40 years of Neverland this and Dream Engine that, I'll believe it when I see it.

I had never heard that back story before. I think it sounds really interesting to see how it all fits together.

This could be interesting. Meatloaf performing with Constantine Maroulis stole the show at last night’s Songwriters Hall of Fame per twitter.

Jordan: Glad to see your sense of taste is as far off as your youth. (Apologies to Jerry Herman for so abusing his line.)

tazber: Really? That's pretty much the only back story Steinman has ever given these songs. He's been working on this (in some form or another) since his college days in 1969. Think Brecht's Baal crossed with Star Wars, crossed with A Clockwork Orange, crossed with West Side Story, with a dash of rock and roll, and a thin skein of Peter Pan over the top. Peter Pan played as gang warfare in a post-apocalyptic NY -- I couldn't make this up if I tried.

He's announced this numerous times before, more regularly since 2006; the Showbiz411 article alludes to a planned West End run, but it leaves out the fact that the original West End run was to have been a "Cirque du Soleil on acid" spectacle in a specially designed venue, with BMX riders, motorcyclists doing astounding stunts in mid-air, parkour, 3-D visuals, and a corps of amazing dancers from around the world. A creative team was announced that rivaled, and in some cases presaged, the unfortunate Spider-Man (the redoubtable and late Eiko Ishioka on costumes, Mark Fisher on set and theater design, animation by Gerald Scarfe, lighting by Marc Brickman, artistic involvement by ILM in their first stage venture, and backing from Sony/BMG).

As with DOTV, Steinman was picking creatives too small to deal with a spectacular spectacular, like Wilson Milam to direct, and Stephen Clark to co-author the book, both of whom have reportedly since been jettisoned. It's no wonder the bloody thing hasn't surfaced in its current form so far, and if you look at the scripts for Dream Engine and Neverland, both on Steinman's website, you can see why some things stay in development for over 40 years.

From what I've seen so far, there's not much good I can say about this current rendition: "a meditation on Captain Hook and friends," the article calls it, as if the person we really want to know about in the Peter Pan tale is Captain Hook. (If we did, we certainly wouldn't want to hear about him cloaked in this extra "atmosphere" Steinman chose to sink the story in.) The only even remotely interesting thing is that apparently he's framing the whole story as a flashback from the older Wendy waiting for Peter to come back, but the only thing that's interesting about it is that no one, to my knowledge, has ever tried such an obvious twist.

Anyone who changes their scree name because they don't want to be associated with what they said when they had it and then makes an announcement about doing it, is a troll.

Or a repentant soul. They rhyme, it's so easy to confuse the two. Now, back to Jim Steinman and his acid dreams!

The back story here seems so much more interesting then the show you came here to discuss.

Repentant souls with some snark. Where's that musical? Let's use the Go-Go's songbook for that.

Jordan Catalano, just because you have been on this site for 7 years and your status is "Bway Legend", that doesn't mean you can go around bashing others. I have seen you around the board alot, and very rarely do you have a nice thing to say about a show or a person. So shut up, or start being nice.

This is absolutely right; his "Legend" status does not give him the right to bash others.

His (a) deep knowledge of theater; (b) excellent memory in recalling the things other posters say; and, (c) superior wit in pointing out all our foibles do.

Party on, Garth.

BAT OUT OF HELL is my all-time favorite, non-musical-theater album. I haven't a clue what it has to do with Peter Pan or Wendy or Captain Hook, but I'm certainly intrigued.

I admit Steinman is a huge guilty pleasure of mine (Bat Out of Hell and his gloriously ridiculous flop girl group album Pandora's Box - Original Sin, which he has mined for songs for Celine and others since, being my faves, though Bad For Good, the album MeatLoaf wasmeant to do as the followup but his voice was too shot from drugs, is pretty good as well, some vocals aside). It's true that this homoerotic, post acolyptical, Peter Pan thing seems to have been on and off again for ages--I thought, starting with Bat out of Hell he had already used all the songs from it. But I suppose if this is called a Bat out of Hell musical it won't matter.

I wish I could see his Joseph Papp produced 60s musical though (was that Dream Engine? the one with all the sex and killer nuns that Steinman claims Papp thought was the most brilliant thing he'd seen).

I always thought the music videos Steinman did in the late 70s were meant to relate to his weird Peter Pan concept. Here's the hysterical Bad for Good video, complete with near naked Lost boys dancing around an, I assume, sexualized Wendy figure (it's too bad MeatLoaf didn't record the album, Jim really shouldn't sing...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jujSbje7pZA

(I find it a hilarious example of forced denial how many Steinman fans refuse to accept that he's gay after things like this...)

The thundering melodies, the D&D imagery mixed with West Coast soap opera, the lyrics that make no sense...you know you love the Steinman!

No, it doesn't. Just because he knows alot about theatre doesn't mean everything that comes out of someones mouth that's not his is stupid. Because its not. When somebody has a good thread, he always finds away of bashing it. It is true that he probably has a lot more knowledge of theatre than most of us, that doesn't mean he can abuse it by hating on everyone else. I just wish he would shut his rotten mouth and start being nice on BWW.

I remember reading somewhere that the song "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" (the Celine Dion thing) was from the Peter Pan scenario, too. I think I even remember that it was supposed to be the opening number with Wendy looking back.

Any idea if that's still the case? Musically it seems so far removed from the "Bat" stuff.
