Is it possible that all four Best Musical nominees from 2005 (Spamalot, Spelling Bee, Scoundrels and Piazza) will still be running? Sure seems that way. And I'm not sure I remember that ever happening before. Can anyone?

the only show that's questionable is Piazza. It may close in March, it may close in July.
Yeah, although it continues to do very decent business, generally around $500,000 a week - certainly better than I thought it might be doing by this point.

True. very strange. I also think that the 06 Tony may be the first to see a jukebox musical nominated for best musical...maybe?
Well, don't forget Mamma Mia was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Didn't win any, though.

It hopefully will be
Color Purple
Drowsy Chaperone
Lestat
In My Life or Woman in White
I'de deffinetly put Jersey Boys in the running..

Jersey Boys is definately in the running. Unless, of course, the Tony Committee decides to once again ignore jukebox musicals (which I can't say I'm totally against... but, I digress).
On a side note... In My Life? Are you serious?
You really think In My Life has any chances of getting a Tony nod? That'd be quite interesting.
So far I believe the first three slots of the Best Actress in a Musical category will go to Patti LuPone, LaChanze, and Maria Friedman, wondering if Benanti will get a nod for The Wedding Singer, and also Kelli O'Hara will probably get a Best Actress nod.
As of now, I'd say the nominees will be:
The Wedding Singer (expect positive reviews)
The Color Purple (expect positive reviews)
Jersey Boys (mostly positive reviews)
and the last slot is wide open. If The Drowsy Chaperone comes to NY with some tweaks and adjustments to what the critics from San Fran didn't particularly like, it may take the last place. In My Life will NOT be nominated for Best Musical. There is no way in hell. I will personally go to the Music Box and throw lemons through the windows if it does get a nod, but it wont so I dont intend on buying lots of lemons anytime soon. Lestat seems like it will be recieving mixed to negative reviews (again this is just a guess) so being a public hit via word of mouth will be the main thing it will rely on to get a nod and a possible (POSSIBLE) win. The Woman in White may very well get a nod for a few reasons. 1) Its ALW's first big Broadway show in quite some time. 2) It's already a big box office hit. 3) The whole Maria Freidman thing could very well result in a sympathy nod (she will defnitely get nominated for what I hear is a terrific performance in WIW). As we know, it got mostly negative, some mixed, and one or two really strong positive reviews. So, like what I said for Lestat, the main thing it's relying on for a Tony nod is the audience.
I think Chita Rivera: The Dancers Life is deemed a "special theatrical event" for which it will most definitely get a nomination and a very possible win. Ring of Fire may very well get a nod as well. It seems like Walk the Line (the critically acclaimed Johnny Cash biopic) will be nominated for a slew of Oscars, very possibly winning some, which will draw attention to this show. I believe it got positive out of town reviews which doesnt hurt. A Tale of Two Cities. Hmm. Again, I think mixed reviews; so a nomination will depend on the audience's reaction. Im on the fence about this one, though. Mary Poppins will be a pretty big critical success if you ask me (London reviews were VERY positive) and audiences love Mary Poppins (although it could go two ways...the CHITTY way or the LION KING way....we'll see), so I think as of now, Poppins has the edge to take the final slot of the Best Musical nominees. And finally, Tarzan. Expect mixed reviews unless it's as visually arresting as Lion King. It should be a hit with audiences but critics...well, they're another animal all themselves.
So there you have it, even thought it wasn't asked for. WickedRocks' Tony predictions! Hahah I love how this thread wasn't even about this topic. :)

Interesting choices Wickedrocks; however, Mary Poppins & Tale of Two Cities aren't opening this season. So that takes those two out of the running. I think the nominees will be:
Women in White
Color Purple
Jersey Boys
...and...maybe Wedding Singer, if it gets the kind of
musical-comedy feedback as did Hairspray.

OK, I think the last time all the Tony nominees from the year before were still running at the next Tony time was 1995, which only had two nominees, Sunset Boulevard and Smokey Joe's Cafe.
The last time there were 4 nominees and all four ran until the next Tonys was (I believe) 1982 with Dreamgirls, Nine, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Pump Boys and Dinettes.
Nice bit of trivia.......
I think that if Drowsy Chaperone comes to New York with Sutton Foster, from what I've heard, both the show and the actress will get a Tony nod.
I think Wedding Singer is given too much credit as a guaranteed hit. I've heard the music, and it isn't that good. Very 80's wanna-be music. I thought this show could be the next Hairspray but the material just isn't as strong.
I sure trust that the new "Sweeney Todd" gets the credit it deserves, and once again, LuPone astounds, as always (at least for me!)
It seems to me (from what I have seen & heard) the Chita piece will be in the special category, unless they revamp the whole thing for Broadway which doesn't seem to be indicated. I always wish Chita well, She's just amazing!
It would also be very nice to see Bernadette host if she would, Otherwise - Perhaps Liza & Rosie? LOL I know but they would be a HOOT hosting together!
Thanks, Margo. Yes, it must have been the 1982 roster of musicals (though poor little Pump Boys closed two weeks after the 1983 ceremony).

Where'd ya hear the Wedding Singer music? Is it available online anywhere? Doesnt seem to be much press around this show just yet.
Wickedrocks, Mary Poppins wont be there cause it does not open till after the tonys.
Unless for the first time ever they nominate a show that has ever opened.
I think the Tony people should let WICKED in on the running for best musical. Q is a great show but really...Anyone can see how much better WICKED is.
I don't think The Wedding Singer will be nominated for Best Musical, there's a lot of shows based in better sources and with better creative teams behind them. I personally believe it is going to be:
The Color Purple
Woman In White or The Drowsy Chaperon
Lestat or Jersey Boys
A Tale of Two Cities
I think material based on literature is more likely to be nominated than shows based on a campy film, also Jersey Boys is likely to get a nod. because according to critics/audience it is a great example of a well-done catalogue musical where the songs are seamlessly intertwined with the book which for a show created with pre-written songs is hard to do.

wickedfreak: um... ok... ?
Will Tarzan get any nominations?
Sorta going off Wicked freak's comment I did always think it'd be interesting if they had like a "Best on Broadway" Tony, sorta like how TV shows can be nominated every year but there is also still a best new series category and new shows could win the best show thing. I mean the one problem is that you'd probably have one show winning it year after year but still an interesting concept. I wouldn't give it to Wicked tho. It would never happen tho
