does anyone else think that the casting of Jennifer Hudson is a huge mistake?
curious other.... who would u have preferred as Effie?
and just heard ONO and it doesnt bother me. I mean its Different certainly but i think it will serve the movie fine. What i do love is the real disco feel of it.

I think the casting of everyone of the Dreamgirls is perfect.

I agree with Pippin.
And I like this. A lot, actually. For those of you saying that Beyonce is adding her own spin to it, and it's not right for the time period, keep in mind that Curtis was aiming to create a new, never-before-heard sound. Beyonce's vocal stylings would definately be that in the 70s.
I think it is great. There is nothing wrong here that some mixing cant help.
I love the photos on this site.
Lorelle: "Deena ate my grammy!"
That may become my new signature.
The Underdogs' production is flawless! what's wrong with it? it sounds lush and extravagant like the 70s.

well at the test screening for the film, and all other press she is called the "show stealer" so most likely it is just you.

I don't listen to the radio much, but this past weekend I turned on 103.5 KTU in New York and they were playing a "remix" version of Beyonce's ONO. It wasn't that great compared to the OBCR.
OMG, this is great. But, I agree with Michael Bennett that it does not seemed mixed completely. Beyonce's voice is a lot louder than the music, which sounds a little muffled. But, I love it!
DECEMBER NEEDS TO GET HERE NOW!

I still find it hard to believe that this has been officially released or that this is the final version.
I think it sounds great. This is gonna be a big dance hit this year I think. Beyonce sounds fierce. Can't wait for And I'm Telling... A little over four months and counting!!
Cheers,
Christopher
all I can say is, after writing the screenplays for GODS & MONSTERS and CHICAGO, then writing and directing KINSEY, I trust the taste of Bill Condon, who is writing and directing this new treatment.
That doesn't mean the music producers haven't made some missteps. But overall, I have high hopes for the film. The trailers look great.

Kringas, where did you avatar image come from? Is that pre-WICKED, or was that designed to look like WICKED? I'm fascinated...

It was in a newspaper here in Chicago. Some church ripped off the Wicked poster.
I still don't think the single has been officially released. Besides being found on a blog devoted to the movie and a site devoted to Beyonce, there's no mention of it anywhere on the internet.
This definitely doesn't sound like a final mix. But the elements are all there, and I'm very impressed.
I never thought the Dreams version sounded much like a disco song in the Broadway show, even though it was supposed to be one.
I'm glad they're getting the authentic disco sound in it for the movie.
I agree, this does not seem to be the final mix. But I liked it. By the way, thanks for everyone who helped me decide which "Dreamgirls" cast recording to get. I ended up getting both.
Cant wait for the movie... and Jenn's "And I am Telling You"
GOD BLESS everyone.
I like it....this just fuels excitement for the film for me.
I think it sounds perfect. It reminds me of Diana's singles in the 70's

Sure, Beyonce sounds great, but she doesn't sound period at all.
Especially if they want a more Diana Ross feel to the story, her riffs are completely out of place.
I'm suspecting there won't be much difference between Hudson and Beyonce, vocally.
I'll just have to wait and see though.
Sigh.

Well, you can really tell the difference between the two in their "real" vocal styles. Jennifer's vocals are warm, full, and very soulful. Beyonce's is mainstream R&B gold. Those are two different vocal styles that I think will contrast perfectly against each other.

I actually like the movie version of "One Night Only". Atleast Beyonce is more believable as Deena than Audra. I'm guessing there will be dialogue in most of the instrumental parts, including the beginning of the song. I've listened to it over and over but it has made me realize that I didn't want to hear the rest of the soundtrack until I see the movie. Sure, I would love to listen to Jennifer's AITYING but I feel like I want to be surprised to see it on screen. I've heard Jennifer's acting on this song was really good so I don't want to dampen the effect by listening to the song first. I won't be surprised though if this song is everywhere come December. I guess the only other song I'd listen to before the movie is "Listen" since I intend to get B'Day.

Wow - a sneak peak of "One Night Only"!!
"Dreamgirls" recieved it's first "test screening" a couple weeks ago to an audience that was unaware of what they would be seeing. As reported by those in attendance the "work in progress edit" recieved sustained applause during and after the screening, including a standing ovation by some after Jennifer Hudson's (Effie's) "And I Am Telling You"....and this was from a selected audience that was waiting in line to see "Pirates of the Carribean"!! A representative from Dreamworks has said they had never seen an audience respond to an early "test screening" the way this audience did!
As for the release of "One Night Only" track - this is indeed the real thing - Dreamworks would've pulled the link had it not been - by all accounts, this mix is the official Soundtrack mix (but perhaps not the mix/edit as it will be in the film). I love how authentic to the period the arrangement sounds! As for Beyonce's slightly nasal vocals (and occasional slip into a southern accent on vowel sounds) - the jury is still out.
After hearing this arrangement I can't wait to hear Jennifer's soulful version of "One Night Only"!
I keep saying, I haven't seen these producers make one misstep so far. The casting is inspired (Eddie, Jamie and Beyonce will appeal to all the food groups and have huge crossover audiences) and they seem to be doing it very authentically. There is no embarassing mistakes in the retro look and because they have SUCH a good director with a great eye (have you seen Gods and Monsters) this will probably be more of a prestidge piece along the lines of The Godfather. It looks very plush and yet still looks like something Michael Bennett would have approved.

I never thought I'd ever hear "Dreamgirls" compared to "The Godfather", hehe...but I totally get where you are coming from!!
This film, unlike some recent movie musical projects (cough, cough) is being helmed by a truely inspired writer/director, a writer/director who was also responsible for the award winning screenplay of "Chicago", a director who as a young man was in the audience at the Imperial theater on opening night of "Dreamgirls" 25 years ago!
David Geffen has been sitting on the film rights for years...waiting for the perfect director to bring a fresh, unique vision to the material.
Bill Condon UNDERSTANDS how to adapt broadway musicals on film and anyone who has seen the "behind the scenes" feature on the official website will surely see evidence of his genius!
So yes, "Dreamgirls" is indeed a prestige project of the highest quality and will no doubt be a cinematic "offer you can't refuse". :)
