To All --
I have a trip planned to NYC in late May 2008.
I have my 8 of my 9 slots filled for shows but have one left (Sunday afternoon - and also Sunday evening).
I have to choose between:
Cry Baby
Boeing Boeing
The Country Girl
Glory Days (new post on this site indicates this is going to open in a month at Circle in the Square)
Off-Bway - The Four of Us (will get this for Sun nite if it has a performance)
I cannot decide which to see. I figure if Cry Baby is good, I can still see the original cast in Oct/Nov (my next trip). But I like to see this stuff before the Tony Awards to make up my own mind. Boeing Boeing and Country Girl are probably shorter runs and will not be up 6 months from now.
HELP... Any suggestions??
PS - I have either seen everything else or have a ticket to see it (although would have liked to see August:Osage County again but oh, well - saw it once already and bought the text for it).

see Cry-Baby.
OR if you're not already seeing it, go see August: Osage County.

To all -
I go to NYC 3 times a year and see about 8-9 shows each time.
Of what is on Broadway, I have seen pretty much all of them once I finish this visit (bring on the Tony's). On this visit, I have:
Tue - Les Liasons Dangerous
Wed (matinee) - Top Girls
Wed (eve) - South Pacific
Thu - Passing Strange
Fri - In the Heights
Sat (matinee) - From Up Here (Off-Bway)
Sat (eve) - A Catered Affair
Sun (matinee) - open and not decided
Sun (eve) - open (Off-Bway or nothing)
What I have not seen:
Gypsy (saw the Bernadette Peters one and don't have the opening to see a "repeat" with the WONDERFUL Patty LuPone - have seen Patty in other shows so this is not a MUST SEE for me given all the others I wanted to see).
Boeing Boeing
The Country Girl
Cry Baby
Little Mermaid (not really interested)
I LOVED LOVED Osage County when I saw it in January. I had originally booked a ticket in November when the strike hit the day before my arrival for a week (ouch). By the way, during that first week of the strike, of the 8 shows I had booked only 2 were cancelled (the others were non-profit, Young Frakenstein and off-broadway). That was strange, disappointing and a little fun all at once.
As for my choices now:
(1) I saw Hairspray in Seattle AND in NYC - LOVED the show. Not sure Cry Baby can duplicate the quality but I do like John Waters subversiveness and humor (or at least the "clean" movies).
(2) Would love to see that Country Girl cast - not sure I am that hyped on the show though.
(3) I just saw the movie version of Boeing Boeing on TCM (LAST NIGHT - how weird) and was not impressed. It is a little dated - but LOVED my favorite Thelma Ritter as the housekeeper - a role another of my favorites - Christine Baranski is playing (I think). I love farce but again, this seems dated.
(4) Have a fear that another unexpected show may come up (like Glory Days) that I would want to see last minute and I won't be able to. Also have a Sunday evening open so any off-Broadway may be able to fit into that slot (LOVE Sunday evening performances - saw Sunday in the Park in previews on my last Sunday night in NYC last visit in January).
ALSO - I will not be back in NYC until October/November - so have to hedge my bets that Cry Baby will make it that far to see it then (although would like to see it BEFORE the Tony Awards).
HELP me decide this last slot...
Thanks again TO YOU ALL

Posted: 3/13/08 at 2:46pmI would say see The Country Girl - just to see McDormand, Freeman and Gallagher on the stage together should make it worthwhile.

Posted: 3/13/08 at 3:04pmI'd pick Country Girl--McDormand and Freeman are two of the best if not THE BEST working actors today...

-Jeff Bowen's worst onstage line flub.

Posted: 3/17/08 at 2:02amI saw the world premiere production of Four of Us and was very disappointed. It's a middling effort after the briliant "Bach at Leipzig".

I'd go with The Country Girl just for the cast.
but if your worried about Tony's then you should probably see The Little Mermaid because it's sure to get a ton of Noms.

Mealz1042 - I AM seeing In the Heights - already got a ticket (at a discount no less). This is for the last slot in my visit.
To all -- thanks for your input. I (maybe stupidly) went with Cry Baby. I think maybe I should have gone for The Country Girl after reading the not so great reports on this board.
I also bought the rip-off Show Insurance and am thinking about pushing this back to October trip and going with The Country Girl.
Any more opinions from those that have seen previews of Cry-Baby??

Posted: 3/18/08 at 12:57pmCheck out Fuerzabruta on Sunday evening. A fun show. My friend saw Cry-Baby last night. Said the first act was ok but the second act was awful.

uncageeg -- thanks for the input on Cry-Baby and Fuerzabuta.
I don't like to do this often, but may even eat the ticket for Cry-Baby to get a ticket for The Country Girl. Its always a shot in the dark with some of these shows (even as well read on the upcoming stuff as I think I am).

Try Alter Boys off-Broadway.
Upbeat, perky, cheap and hilarious. IMHO.
