Not for another four months!
I thought she gave a pretty powerful performance, but iconic? No.
Bette Davis in All About Eve is iconic
Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is iconic
Olivier in Hamlet is iconic
Anne Hathaway in Les Miz? Not iconic.

Let's just say...my interest in the film died with Anne Hathaway's character.

"Awards don't mean anything, and they have nothing to do with the general public liking it."
Awards mean plenty to the people who made the picture and the company that distributes it. And when it makes half a billion bucks, that would indicate that at least some of the "general public" liked it. Of course I respect that you didn't like it but it's almost as if you can't bear the fact that a lot of people did.
Starship-My interest in the film died when Anne Hatheway opened her mouth but was reborn when SHE died.
"3 Oscars out of 8 nominations, 3 Golden Globes, 4 BAFTAS, a slew of other honors and a gross of half a billion. Yeah, it was dreadful."
I am assuming your "it was dreadful" is sarcastic. But, just because a movie wins awards, doesn't mean people have to like the film. It's almost like you can't stand that a lot of people really, really hated it.
I'm sure a lot of people did 'really, really hate it', but I think his point was that it seems like a lot of people also at least enjoyed it enough to vote for it to win a few oscars, or recommend their friends/family to see it (evidence in the large box-office grosses).
The majority of the box office was from viewers overseas, it only made 148 million here, which isn't a ton these days. I think a lot of people saw it just because they loved the musical, doesn't mean it was any good.

Award worthy? Yes. Award winning? Yes. Iconic? No.
It was a heavily promoted movie that scored at Oscar time. Two years later I don't think it's very well remembered. I doubt anything about it is headed towards iconic status.
The version dubbed for German release is Teutonic.

"But, just because a movie wins awards, doesn't mean people have to like the film."
This is true, but the film's gross income suggests that most people did like it. Awards speak for the industry insiders, but the money speaks for everyone else. If it were seen a turd of a film by the majority of the movie going public, word of mouth would have sucked and the movie would have tanked at the box office. You may not have liked it, many here may not have liked it, but that does not stop the film from being a success on all levels that count.
All of that being said, I enjoyed Hathaway's performance in the film, and I thought it was great. If she were on stage I would likely have compared that performance to Rubin-Vega's performance in the first revival, which was not so good.

Sutton, I was being sarcastic. It always amuses me when someone who doesn't like something, which is everyone's right, is outraged that other may have liked it. No, awards and grosses are not everything but they are an indication that some people admired the picture. To simply dimiss it as a piece of crap seems a bit lazy. But then this is a board for theater enthusiasts, not cinephiles.

Sure, some people did admire the picture, and I'm sure some people liked it. No outrage from me. It's not "lazy" if it's true, and for me it absolutely is.
Buying a ticket is not the same as liking the film.
Wait. Stop. We're supposed to accept as a given that "CZJ" was iconic in Chicago?
Mr Nowack--you just hit the nail on the head - you can only decide AFTER the event.
This thread is actually the first time that I have seen so many emerge and reveal their honest[negative] thoughts on her performance. Advertising bombarded us ,daring us NOT to like her.
Well golly I didn't reckon y'all had such mighty strong feelins for Miss.Anne Hatheway. U guys are funnier than a pooh bear in a beehive.
Iconic? Not at all. She deserves to have her acting card taken away for her performance in Les Mis. I would have rathered she win the Oscar for her work in The Dark Knight Rises or The Princess Diaries.

For me, it would be Bride Wars.
