After thinking about it and talking to a friend, I agree that someone more associated with the theatre should host. If she is a host, she should co-host with someone from the theatre community.

"And now my best friend Gayle will talk to us about the psychosis of the characters in the revival of Sweeney Todd"
I'd watch her host if only to watch her announce everyone's name like she does on her show...
"and now, ladies and gentlmen...here he is...Nathan Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnne!
*cue screaming housewives*
She will almost certainly do it for "her" show's promotion and a grateful League wil give that show every award they can. Talk amout your moist incestuous relationships! EHH It means the performers have a job so... *shrug*

Sara Ramirez will NOT be presenting. The presenters are always "famous" people that the TV audience knows from movies or TV shows.

dargonit!
ggrr.... well, maybe she can join the cast of tarzan, and be a performing gorilla with a belting musical number in gorilla language- that would make me happy! :)
We should email her. PLEASE host!

yeah, i need to write her!
and plus if she becomes a big tv star, she can definitely host!!!!
The question isn't whether she could host, but whether she will accept when the Tony committee comes to beg her. My guess is no, considering the amount of preparation involved; it's a commitment I don't see her making. She most likely will be a presenter, though.
Just because Oprah put up $1 million of her own money to promote TCP doesn't mean she should be considered to host the Tony's. $1 million to her is nothing and she should have given it to a Katrina victim or a wounded soldier instead of self promotion which she is famous for. Keep her out of Broadway.

They can have David Letterman host. Oprah might be present for Color Purple and Uma Thurman could be there as a big star with the Producers movie and he can do his Oprah-Uma schtick again and start up the feud all over again...lol.
And Sara ramirez could be a presenter, she did win a Tony last year and by the time the Tonys come around she will have been on a pretty big TV show with Grey's Anatomy so she might be a bit more well known outside the Broadway community. Plus they'd be curious to see what dress she'd wear this time around.

If Oprah hosts the night's best musical winner will be as predictable as the year when Mary Tyler Moore came out to present the best musical award to "Thoroughly Modern 'UrineTown was Robbed' Mille."
I, personally, will be thrilled if Oprah hosts the Tonys. In the last few years, Tony ratings have dipped lower and lower. Oprah Winfrey would without a doubt raise those ratings and credt the Tonys with what they deserve. And stop worrying, Color Purple is not going to win Best Musical.

I think itd be cool if she hosted. So far, I can see the show winning Best Musical anyways. Its just a so which so much heart that its hard to hate it , ya know? I mean its hard to be like "that musical aboue rape and slavery sucked." but who knows...Not sure who else would host? Hopefuly not Hugh, cause as we know, he didnt do much for ratings, plus I'm sick of seeing him up there, get someone new ppl!

i personally think it would be pretty cool to have Oprah host the tonys. She's a big str and would bring in a lot of home viewers. Sure, she's a little self serving, but i think it would be interesting to have her host. Also, I've been to the tonys the past few years, and if i get the chance to go again, seeing Oprah i thin would be a plus.
I bet you she does not host .. but participates big time.

I guess she is sorta self-serving, but all the proceeds of her DVD sales go to her Angel - something - foundation. And she has that show where all she does is give free sh*t away to the Hurricane helpers. With all that, who cares if she puts $1 mill. into a project she believes in and loves and is passionate about? i would too if i had the money!

"Talk show host beloved by housewives hosting the Tonys? It could never happen! What's next, she'll turn out to be a lesbian?"
this killed me.
I think, honestly, if we really want to reach a wide audience with the Tony Awards (something that hasn't really happened much lately), we have to throw in the towel a little bit. I think Oprah would probably be good for it.
Also, off-topic, to those of you who don't think TCP will win, who DO you think will win? just curious
Tarzan
The Color Purple
Jersey Boys
Lestat
Chita-Rivera the Dancers life
Ring of Fire
The Wedding Singer
The Woman in White
sorry to threadjack
Oprah hosting the Tonys is a great idea! I'm sure if she did, the show would score its highest ratings ever. I'm for anything that exposes the masses to the wonderful world of theatre! If anyone can do this, Oprah can.

Really, is that what she is famous for? Because I could have sworn that she gave $10 million of her own money on top of the the $5 million she encouraged people around the world to donate to Hurricane Katrina victims. I also could have sworn that her six disc "best of" collection was going to the Angel Network foundation that has helped tens of thousands of families start new lives or send their children to college, and giving christmas cheer to 50,000 African children.
So, if she wants to give $1 million dollars to something that she felt moved by and that has been a major part in her life, who are you to call her self-serving?
On a side note: if the government would help us (us meaning that I was/am a victim of Hurricane Katrina), then we would not need the monetary help of people (famous or not)

Chita Rivera will be a Special Event and not eligible for Best Musical
Bring back Rosie!!!!
Hey Mr. Jamie: bet you could have used that $1 million so how come you didn't benefit from the $10 mill she gave. Where did that go? Believe me if Oprah gives money to anything or anyone, we will all know about it since she is unable to give anonomously (no thrill in that). Hope the "government" helps you out soon since I am sure I can't even imagine how devastated those affected directly by Katrina must feel. I am sorry that our government is not coming to your aid quickly enough. I guess the monumental destruction of this natural catastrophe may be overwhelming to them as well (I like to give the government the benefit of the doubt instead of bashing it at every turn since I love my country and don't want those who wait to destroy us to sit back and watch us mangle ourselves). Sorry for the aside but back to Oprah. I know she has many many residences and I don't recall her offering lodging on a personal level to anyone but then again she may not have wanted to have all kinds of people all over her properties. As you can see I am not a fan of her so sorry if I think she should stay out of Broadway. Hope you enjoy TCP. I think I'll skip it.
They can have David Letterman host.
Did you SEE when he hosted the Oscars?
Letterman? Why??? In God's name, why??
The only decent hosts of any awards shows I've seen in recent years were Steve Martin and Ellen DeGeneres. Period.
I think Chris Rock would be fun, though.
