Bestnurse....since when is GIVING some of YOUR money to anything supposed to be put in relative terms?? I think if someone is willing to give ANY of THEIR earnings or possessions then it is always in absolute terms. It's not, "All celebrities should give money relative to their wealth". Who says they HAVE to give? NO ONE!
Has Ted Turner? Bill Gates? Sam Walton? or any of those people given money? No, I don't think so. And I'm sure you'll try to give an argument that they have given anonomously, but honestly when those people are as high profile as that, then it's QUITE hard to do ANYTHING anonymously.
And the argument about why doesn't she house people in her residences???? That doesn't even need an answer. Have you opened up your home to people you don't know that have gone through a crisis? Maybe you don't want her on Broadway, (even though too late she is, being a producer and all), and I'm sure she doesn't want to start trying to TAKE over theater. She had a vested interest in this project, so she decided to give money to help it out? What's the problem with that? So it says "Oprah Winfrey presents", I'm sure that had a lot to do with marketing (very successful marketing at that), and not Oprah's self serving nature, that you claim she has.
I don't really care if she hosts it or not. I don't see her as having the comic nature needed in order to do it, so in that respect I can see where you're coming from. But just because you don't "like" her, or thinks she's trying to slide into a Best Musical win, is just absurd. Oprah doesn't NEED favors!!!!! OR for people to like her, she's a billionaire, luckily for her, MILLIONS do like her, LOVE her. So I'd say she's doing alright.
Hey b-wayhereIcome:settle down. I know millions of people like Oprah which is great. I am not one of them. Really, I should not have wasted this much time on this subject since there are hundreds of other issues in this country to get worked up about and Oprah should not be one of them. It's not worth my time. Merry Christmas!

Good.
I'm Jewish though. Thanks anyway! Happy Holidays!
We may never know all of the people that have given money to relief unless it is announced. Oprah has given money to causes I never knew until someone told me. They don't go around announcing everytime a celebrity gives money to a cause. Usually not unless it is a huge event like the hurricane. I assume the reference to Bill Gates was for the hurricane. We do know that he donates huge amounts for causes and may have donated to the hurricane as well. A lot of times it just isn't made public.
Also, if the richer portion of our country were to always give anonymously, they'd find themselves being hassled for never giving anything (as far as the general population knows.)
And, actually... Sam Walton's dead. He can't really give anything any more.
That said, I hope Oprah doesn't host the Tony's for selfish reasons, but if she does, good. At least there'll be more viewership and more exposure to Broadway for the housewife crowd.
OMG, i love Oprah and it would be so cool if she hosted them.
