Yes, you can bring binoculars. Just no cameras in the house. And some of my co workers arent the most tactful of people so sometimes people jump to conclusions and yell if they see you with binoculars thinking its a camera. If this happens don't worry about it - there are just some stupid people out there.

Yeah, dress circle isnt the best since you cant see the top of the stage (dragon, elphaba flying, etc...) Also the "box" seats and the seats all the way on the end on orchestra for about rows A-F are rough....

I saw the show last year and I sat in the Dress Circle. Fabala is right, I couldn't see the top of the stage, but the seats were ok. The theatre itself is pretty huge.

Another difference from New York- only two tall tower pieces roll on the stage to make scenes instead of 4. This only ever bothers me during the Wizard and I when Elphaba is singing and as she brings her hands down the towers move towards offstage, as if she's pushing them with her "power" and there's a second beat where she does it again, only there is no second set of towers to magically move. re: Oriental Theatre in Chicago Sad.

I saw the chicago cast this past summer with my younger cousin from Germany. The cast is wonderful. It was my 3rd time seeing it and I thought the show was in good shape. Kristy is an excellent performer. I have seen Idina and Julia(on tour). They were all great. I loved Kristy's voice. The theater is big but not a bad seat there I was in row P on the right side orch and it was a good seat

Your ignorance is showing. Oriental is perfectly acceptable to describe a building or object. The only objection to the term is in its usage to describe people, and even then it seems to only be controversial in North America.

Fosse76, the broadway response to that is "Everyone's a little bit racist, sometime"

I saw Courtney Corey's first performance as Elphaba and thought she was great. It was nice to have a non-screamer in the role, but with a strong belt.

I sat in the 4th row on the side almost near the wall and could still see great (as could the people behind me who insisted that this was the theatre Lincoln was shot at....oooy).

sorry for bringing the thread back from the dead, but im seeing beautiful and i was wondering if the obstructed view seats in the dress circle are bad. I figure that this show isn't played high up much. Is there a pole there? the seats that im talking about are rows GG HH JJ KK and LL seats 5-9.

When I sat there, it was an overhang that cuts off the top of the stage.  I haven't seen Beautiful, so I don't know how much would be missed.

To poster #31 - get a grip

It is a shame you cannot take pictures of the theater itself. Most of these old theaters are very photogenic due to the ornate plasterwork. The Oriental along with many other loop theaters (most sadly gone) had most of furnishings auctioned off in the 60's or 70's. The Oriental used to have elephant chairs in the foyer which were gorgeous. The same firm that designed the Oriental did the Chicago. At least you have some palaces downtown. NY has none.

Our theaters are quite lovely. Unfortunately they're also gigantic. The rear mezzanine feels like a million miles away. I haven't seen beautiful but I'd go with partial view dress circle over anything higher any day. I have sat in the dress circle for several shows and never had an issue, but I've usually been close to the front, which can make a big difference.

Although you still have a few left, you have lost a ton of ornate theaters over the years.
