I still say go with Megan Mullally. She is a bit older than Depp, but she doesn't look it at all!
Singing aside, I think Christopher Lloyd would make an awesome Judge.
Sweeney: Johnny has it. Although Kevin Kline would have been fab.
Mrs. Lovett: Streep....was born to play this role
Johanna: Anne Hathaway
Anthony: Jake Gyllenhall. I hope. :)
Judge: Christopher Lee.
Beadle: not sure.
Beggar Woman: Helena Carter or Toni Colette
Pirelli: Alan Cumming
and finally
Tobias: Jamie Bell (I could see him finally getting an Oscar nom for this)
Depp could very well be dubbed over. I really want Streep but because it's Burton he might stick Helena Carter in there. Anne Hathaway performed 'Kiss Me' at a Sondheim benifit and she stated that she really wants to work with Burton. I can imagine she's got a big shot at getting this role.
It's very unlikely they'll dub Depp. Hopefully no one will be dubbed.
I feel Depp is almost too good-looking for this role. It won't be hard to realize how Lovett is infatuated with him and his looks.
I wonder how the opening and closing ballad would work in a film. That will be very interesting.

Sweeney Todd: Johnny Depp(It's now official)
Mrs. Lovett: ?????????
Pirelli: Martin Short or Alan Cumming
Tobias: Freddie Highmore(I really hope he gets it, I think he would be perfect for it)
Johanna: Anne Hathaway or maybe Amanda Bynes(if she does good in Hairspray)
Anthony:???????????
The Beggar Woman: Helena Bonham Carter
Judge Turpin: Christopher Lee
The Beadle: Glenn Shaddix(Otho from Beetlejuice). I had someone else in mind for The Beadle but I can't remember who it was.
Maybe they could have Victor Garber in a cameo as Jonas Fogg

Sweeney - Johnny has it....we can't fight.
Mrs. Lovette - Meryl Streep. But since Johnny's not that old they will most likely get Toni Collette
Pirelli - Alan Cumming
Anthony - I forgot his name but he was in the South Pacific Concert.
Tobias - ???
Judge Turpin - Jonathan Pryc
Joahnna - ???
Beadle - Alexander Geimagni (sp?)
Beggar Woman/Lucy - Patti LuPone
I always thought that Emmy Rossum would make a FANTASTIC Johanna.

This whole thread is making me ill, as the speculation becomes more and more bizarre! Does anyone remember the "less than stellar" results of the two musical made into films and released this past year ("Rent" and "The Producers") and they, at least, had much bigger followings than "Sweeney".Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but there is absolutely NO REASON to make this movie and I predict that they will lose a bundle of $$ on it. Just my opinion....
RENT failed because it was a bad translation of the musical without any name actors to sell it.
THE PRODUCERS failed because it was basically the stage musical put on film without any changes. It was EXTREMELY evident that Mel Brooks didn't direct it...it missed his magic. It was as if all the actors were playing to an audience that wasn't there.
SWEENEY could be immensely successful with the right cast, right concept, and with Burton's following.
Whoever mentioned Amanda Bynes as Johanna has to be on crack.
I'm on the bandwagon for Anne Hathaway as Johanna; her "Kiss Me" from Sondheim's birthday concert a while back was phenomenal.
While I'd love to see one of the recent Tobys do it, I guess they're going for a child. If Jamie Bell can sing it, he should do it. I think that mid-late teen age range would fit it really well.
Ewan as Anthony would be nice, if not a little old to play a "hot blooded sailor"

If they didn't have to digitally enhance her notes in Phantom, I'd be all for it.
The suggestion of Anne Hatheway sounds good.

Is there anywhere that I can hear this?
I too like the Anne Hathaway as Johanna suggestions, but she doesn't seem like an actress that Tim Burton would go after...
If Toni Collette isn't Lovett I may throw a little temper tantrum, I just love that woman. Although most of the other suggestions would be fine by me (Streep, Mullally, even Lupone) just not Nicole Kidman...I just don't think that she would do well in the part at all. I'm also just not really a Tracy Ullman fan...

Since they cut Green Finch, Johanna probably isn't nearly as difficult to sing now. Anyone else think Kristen Bell could pull it off?
As for Lovett, I'm with those who want Megan Mullaly.

They cut Green Finch?
Can this be confirmed? If so that sucks, considering it's one of my favorite songs.

I think the cuts were discussed earlier in this thread. The script could always be revised, but I doubt the song will end up in the film.

Anne Hathaway is the only actress I can think of who would probably make a good Johanna. I'm not sure if she'd take the role though. Tobias is supposed to be played by a child in the film so why not give the role to a newcomer?
I'm very much intrigued as to who will be playing Mrs.Lovett. The thought of Tracey Ullman even being considered for this part makes me a little sick. I believe they should get a first-rate actress. Kate Winslet proved to have great chemistry with Depp in Finding Neverland, she should definitely be considered for Mrs.Lovett.

I would hope that Anne Hathaway would take the role, but it's kind of different of a part. Definitely NOT Emmy Rossum tough. We'll see what happens, but I agree with some of the others... I don't think that the show will translate well onto the screen. I hope, in any effect, that Tim Burton will choose people outside of his realm. It would be nice to see people that suit the roles well.
In my OH SO humble opinion, Tim Burton was one of the worst things to happen to the movie. His "vision" (if that's what you can call it) usually overpowers the actual story. He's way to whimsical and just... well, wrong. But, I 'm THRILLED for this movie. I'll go see it no matter what.
I've gotten used to Johnny and think that Helena would make a GREAT begger woman. I agree with whomever said Chris Plummer as either Fogg or The Judge.
Anyway, I really don't have much to add. Cyndi would be AMAAAHZING as Lovett, I think. Toni Colette would also be another Begger Women possibility.
Johanna is extremly hard to cast. Maybe NBC can make a reality show "The Search for Johanna". It would send ratings through the roof :)
Emmy Rossum would make me loose total and utter faith in this movie.
Ullman is also a bad choice, IMO.
I think this movie will be insanly hard to cast and I'm oh-so nervous to hear the score changes that'll be implemented.

NathanLaneStalker - are you thinking of Jason Danieley for Anthony? He'd be great, but I doubt they'd cast him, seeing as he's somewhat unknown, even in theatrical circles.
Lovett: Megan Mullaly
Anthony: Ewan McGregor
Johanna: Anne Hathaway
Beggar Woman: Nicole Kidman
Tobias: Get an unknown - I think Freddie Highmore is far too young for this role. I see Tobias as being more of a teenager.
Pirelli: What if they got some opera type to sing this? My vote: Andrea Bocelli
Beadle: Unsure, though since it seems that all his music is cut, a big Hollywood star could definitely do this.
Judge: Jonathan Pryce would tear apart this role, especially if they are adding his "Johanna" to the film
The idea of Annie Lennox as Mrs Lovett is interesting to me.
Whoever mentioned Juliette Lewis, she can sing, but she's not a soprano.
Anne Hathaway has stated that one of her dreams is to work with Tim Burton. She has also stated that she loves Sondheim. If offered the role (which I'm sure she will be) I can't imagine her turning it down.
Also as an interesting note, Anne was originally signed on to play Christine in Phantom (the film) was was forced to withdraw because of her contract with Princess Diaries II. And I think (but don't wuote me) that a similar thing happened with Hugh Jackman (cast as the Phantom) but he had to leave because of the "Boy From Oz."
I reallly want Jamie Bell as Tobias. Really badly.
I think Hathaway is too old if they go with the way she is written in that draft of the Logan script I read. She is supposed to be 15.
Hathaway was never "signed" to play Christine. She may have been offered the role and turned it down, but if she had actually signed a contract, the story would have been in the trades.

Yes, Anne Hathaway was offered the role of Christine but she had to turn it down because Disney would not let her out of her contract for Princess Diaries 2. At the end of the day she got to make another movie with Julie Andrews instead of being in a horrible film adaptation of a rather mediocre show (just my bitter perspective on the issue).
Even if Johanna is 15 in the Logan screenplay, isn't Hollywood known for casting actors who are much older than the age of their roles? Just a question. I just really think Hathaway would make a great Johanna. Although if a bankable star is cast as Mrs.Lovett they could take more risks in casting unknowns for the younger roles.

The three actresses that I thought would do justice to Mrs. Lovett would be Imelda Staunton (whom I love on the OLCR of Into the Woods), Toni Collette and my personal choice Emma Thompson (whom I also think would make an ideal Desiree in A Little Night Music).
Personally, I wouldn't have gone with Burton as director on this project, but at least it will have an interesting design and concept, as seen in his previous films. And most appropriately, he'll have a field day with the dark humor.
