CRISPIN GLOVER FOR TOBY! CRISPIN GLOVER FOR TOBY! CRISPIN GLOVER FOR TOBY!
Cruel, take a breath. Glover is not even a year younger than Depp. There is no way he will be Tobias.
And you all know that Jamie Bell is no longer a teen, right?

He is, in fact, a year younger than Depp.
Either way, who cares? Crispin can do anything. He is a prince amongst men.

jaime bell is just 20. and he still looks quite young.
What we're forgetting is that, in Logan's script, Toby is played by a child.
And with Burton's past experience with Freddie Highmore, I can assure you the boy with, at the very least, have a screen test for the role.
Here's my choices... based on Johnny Depp in the lead...
Mrs. Lovett - Either Meryl Streep or Toni Collette (depending on if they want an "older" Mrs. Lovett or not)
Beggar Woman - AN UNKNOWN, SO THE PLOT ISN'T GIVEN AWAY. She should look like nothing more than an "extra" in the early scenes.
Johanna - Also an unknown... but cast her faithfully to the story as a 16 year old (so the actress shouldn't be more than 20 years old at the very most). And she should have a beautiful soprano voice... at least for a film. She doesn't need to be able to fill a theatre with it... just sound georgous on a recording. No more "mousey" Emmy Rossum voices!! I want a rich and full controlled tone. And they're out there!
Anthony --- I keep picturing Orlando Bloom, but that's due to the Pirates movies, no doubt.
The Judge --- Jack Nicholson. Yes, please.
The Beadle --- Robby Coltrane. Let's have a "From Hell" reunion.
Tobias --- Unknown. Cast him YOUNG. Should look 14 or 15 on screen.
Pirelli - Geoffrey Rush. Keep it all in the family.

b12b, I'm 17, but I look 12-15 on screen. I REALLY want to play Toby. I am praying every day for open auditions!
Oh, I'd love to see Kristin in another movie, it would make me smile...but do recall, this is TIM BURTON. I really don't think dark, creepy Tim Burton would cast the energetic and enthusiastic, hyper little Kristin in any movie that he's putting his name on. No insult to Kristin, of course, she's in my top three favorite actresses...but I really don't think she and Tim Burton would make a good team XD
I am sticking with Jeremy Irons for the Judge

Yes, siree, I do like Jeremy Irons for judge, even though I've only seen him in "The Merchant of Venice" (two movies if you count "The Lion King" :P).
Oh, and Meryll (spelling?) Streep as Mrs. Lovett would be dandy.
I like Jeremy Irons as the Judge, and I expect that if Freddy Highmore (the kid from Finding Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) can carry a tune, he could be Tobias. I agree that the Beggar Woman should be unknown, but how about using a name, but making her uncredited and making her up so she is unrecognizable (think Glenn Close in Hook)?
Of the many names suggested for Mrs. Lovett, I like Toni Collette.
What do people think about Beverly D'Angelo as Mrs. Lovett?
She's not a big enough name for a movie version. I doubt Toni Collette is a big enough name either. Yes, Depp is the draw, but we are still talking about a 70 million film version of a Sondheim MUSICAL about a singing-throat-slashing-barber. I think the studio will push for some names.

I highly agree that the only reason Toni Collette might not be considered for the role is because although she is a magnificent actress, she has never been a major draw for a film (even In Her Shoes relied more on Cameron Diaz and Shirley McLaine). I assume the producers will want someone with a more bankable name.
I'd actually prefer Geoffrey Rush as the Judge.

I am still expecting to see Victor Garber as Judge Turpin. I can also see it happening because:
a) he has the voice, for the Judge's limited singing
b) a shout-out to Sweeney fans
c) a fairly credible name with shows like Alias and his new one this season, where he is basically the lead
d) he would do it in a heartbeat
I also completely agree with the Beggar Woman being an unknown. With that said, I have no doubt in my mind it should be Diana from the revival.

For Dick Tracy, they wanted Sondheim to write the songs and score, but only did the songs. Elfman wrote the score. Also, Elfman wrote some underscore for Chicago and didn't mess with any of Kander&Ebb's songs.
So even if Elfman did anything on it, it wouldn't disrupt the Sondheim material.
My picks would be:
Sweeney: Depp
Lovett: Meryl Streep (if they go for older), Kate Winslet (if they go for around the same age).
Beggar Woman: Helena Bonham Carter (come on, you know Burton will cast his girlfriend)
Anthony: I agree with those who've said Orlando Bloom. (If he can carry a tune.)
Johanna: For some reason...I keep thinking of Alexis Bledel. But who knows if the girl can sing. She just has that pure face and can pass for very young.
Toby: Freddie Highmore
The Judge: I agree with best12...Jack Nicholson.
The Beadle: Jack Black...there I said it.
Pirelli: Steve Buscemi...if Pirelli doesn't have to sing.
I'm not really happy with the choice of Toby being a child. The whole point of the character that he is a little boy trapped into a grown man's body and although he is "mentally confused" he sees and knows all. In fact, he is the most sane person in the whole bunch. Did anyone not get John Doyle's interpretation of it?
So...Toby has to be played by someone older. Neil Patrick Harris, Manoel, Justin Timberlake even.

It's not Doyle's interpretation. Toby's always been played by someone older.
I know...but Toby was the focus of the story even when not really in the scene he reacted to everything that went on.
Anywho...I was thinking...and I know that this isn't going to happen but I would love to see Megan Hilty as Johanna. Ahh!!! She'd be perfect!!!

I agree with b12b that the beggar woman should be played by an unknown actress. That twist at the end of the movie is critical and a well-known actress will have audiences putting two-and-two together much easier.

No, she wouldn't be. In the Logan script, Johanna is supposed to be around 15 or 16 years old, and Hilty is young but not that young.
Jim Carey for Pirelli. The movie he and Tim Burton were supposed to make this coming year fell through, which is why the movie got fast-tracked. So he's available and has a relationship with Burton already. And he attended performances of Sweeney last year at the Arden in Philadelphia.
I bet he does it.
I have a very strong feeling that Jim Carey will end up being cast as Pirelli. I can see that.
Ugh...I'm not too happy with this script. I feel like it's cutting out huge elements out of the story line by making roles younger. Making Johanna 15 or 16? Very gross being that the judge wants to marry her. I really hope they get amazing people to do this. This is the most complex music in a show that I have ever heard and they have to get amazing people for it or it will suck.
Can't us theater people just have something to ourselves without it becoming a major motion picture?

I don't think you understand this. These are how the characters are originally supposed to be. Stage productions have cast the show older than they're supposed to be but Johanna IS supposed to be 14. If you pay attention to the show you'll know that Sweeney was sent away when Johanna was a newborn and he returned 14 years later. So Johanna is supposed to be 14-15. It's supposed to be gross that the judge wants to marry her...he's a pedophile.
