I love Ewan but does he have the vocal chops for Anthony? I can't imagine him doing "Johanna" justice...
P.S.--in response to Michael Bennett's post, I am all about cutting/rewriting things as necessary to make it "film-worthy." It is an EXTREMELY theatrical piece, and such alterations would be necessary. As long as they are true to the spirit of the source material, and don't cut anything MAJOR, I think it's fine. Besides, we already have a film of the stage production (with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn). We don't need another one.
Jeremy Irons as the Judge.
'nuff said.
That would be great.
And what about Adam Garcia for Anthony?
*bumped* so I can hopefully get responses to my suggestion of Jeremy Irons for the Judge....
Barbra, Meryl, Emma, Kate Winslet, Julie Walters could be Mrs. Lovett.
The studio wants a b/o name to go with Depp. Although a good actor he is NOT a guarantee at the b/o. This is a period British musical.
Even though Depp is in his early 40s, he looks younger. Does this mean they will make him look older and ugly? Or if they leave him alone, will they go for a younger Mrs. Lovett?
There's always Madonna and her faux British accent. :)

hayley joel osmond for toby.
That's (Hayley Joel Osmet) who my sister suggested. I also suggested Shia LeBoeuf, although I don't know if either can sing.
So my casting thus far is limited to:
Jeremy Irons = Judge
Adam Garcia = Anthony
Anne Hathaway = Johanna
Maybe Jesse L Martin for the Beadle? Provided the powers that be are ok with non-period casting?
"Jeremy Irons as the Judge.
'nuff said."
Count me in, that would be great!!!
Maybe Jesse L Martin for the Beadle?
Not a snowball's chance in hell.
Uh, yeah about Jesse Martin as the Beadle..
That is one of the stragest ideas I've ever heard. Are you just suggesting that because he plays a cop on TV?
The Beadle is always played by the same type of guy, even in the new revival. The Beadle is chubby, and has to be very sinister.
Not to mention the beadle is a screaming tenor. Jesse is not.
I can't believe I forgot to mention that, lol. Jesse had trouble singing RAZZLE DAZZLE. No chance in hell he could sing the Beadle.
The more I think about it, the more I begin to realize how perfect Toni Collette is for Lovett...
We all know she can sing, and she could for sure act the hell out of this role. She is closer to age with Depp (she's 35,) and she has the ability to pull off the dark grungy look Burton is sure to be going for... My vote is for Collette.
If not her, I guess Ullman would suffice, but I dnk. Something just irks me about her. I didn't like her in the "Once Upon a Mattress" movie, and I just don't see her having the ability to be a realistic love interest for Johnny Depp.
Well you have to remember it's a one-sided love. Lovett loves Sweeney, but he does not love her back. So usually Lovett and Sweeney never look like realistic love interests.
I understand that, but visually, the audience should be able to at least picture them together. If they don't think Sweeney and Lovett COULD realistically be together, than it doesn't make sense. And with Ullman.. I just can't see it.
No, I did not say that because he plays a cop on TV. (BTW, I hate L&O and never watch it. The connection never crossed my mind.)
I also did not know that the Beadle is always chubby, and I question the use of the word 'always.' Who says it has to be that way for the movie. Isn't the role of Sweeney always played by someone known for their singing abilities? And yet we have an actor whose singing abilities are unknown in the lead.....and isn't the show "always" performed with a big pit and big cast?
Having only listened carefully to the revival cast recording, I did not realize that the Beadle has to be a tenor, particulalry aa Alex uses his falsetto for all the high notes. I'm assuming Jesse has a falsetto voice that he could use as well.
Lastly, I think Jesse has the chops to be very sinister. Not that the Rent movie was his best work or anything, but in the brief second where he's shown singing "Dies irae, dies ira" (sp?) during "La Vie Boheme", he looks pretty creepy.

I think Ben Kingsley would be an awesome judge.
What about Kate Blanchett or Kate Winslet for Mrs. Lovett?
Circusliz, I suggest you listen to the OBCR. The Beadle is a tenor, there is no way around it.
Beadle and Pirelli are the tenors of the show.
And Alex is a tenor, in regular voice. In natural voice Jesse is a baritone.
So many great suggestions out there
I'd be happy with Merryl, Toni, and especially Patti :)
Color me crazy, but the idea just popped into my head as one of her songs came on, but what about Anny Lennox? I'm unsure of her acting talents... but would she has the quirck-factor and the accent down :)
Just an idea that popped into my head and I didn't fully think out, but a thought nonetheless

i like the idea of Meryl Streep as Mrs. Lovett- she would play the role wonderfully!
but has their been a new article or something stating that this project is moving forward? last i heard was that no one knew it was... i just got back from europe, so im a little behind...

Though, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton weren't on the IMDB page last I checked.
Anyhoo, I still like the idea of Nicole Kidman playing Mrs. Lovett.
I am starting to warm up to the idea of a movie though im not sold yet. I defintily will see it though. I think if they cast mckellen or lee as turpin they should keep the judges song in the movie it could be creepily well done on screen. Cyndi Lauper as Lovett she has talent and could ge tpeople to come if you think about it the movie could sell well cuz of depp.
I felt like Cyndi would be a viable replacement on Broadway before I saw the show itself, and I think it would still be an interesting twist in the film or broadway.
Following up on my Annie Lennox idea, I YouTubed some of her videos and she is amazing theatrical so I think she'd be a very interesting choice.
p.s If you watch "No More I Love Yous" she definately has the original Angela-Lovett hair.
