No, I did not say that because he plays a cop on TV. (BTW, I hate L&O and never watch it. The connection never crossed my mind.)
I also did not know that the Beadle is always chubby, and I question the use of the word 'always.' Who says it has to be that way for the movie. Isn't the role of Sweeney always played by someone known for their singing abilities? And yet we have an actor whose singing abilities are unknown in the lead.....and isn't the show "always" performed with a big pit and big cast?
Having only listened carefully to the revival cast recording, I did not realize that the Beadle has to be a tenor, particulalry aa Alex uses his falsetto for all the high notes. I'm assuming Jesse has a falsetto voice that he could use as well.
Lastly, I think Jesse has the chops to be very sinister. Not that the
Rent movie was his best work or anything, but in the brief second where he's shown singing "Dies irae, dies ira" (sp?) during "La Vie Boheme", he looks pretty creepy.
On the road of life, do not pause for suicidal chipmunks who freeze in your headlights, seeking death by your tires...
