Lesley Manville and Annette Bening
Updated On: 8/3/11 at 09:45 AM
Well, I'd buy a full price tickets to see the two of the in anything, but right now I'm picturing Annette as Diane McBride and Lesley as Mrs. McBride in Guare's Marco Polo Sings a Solo.
Next: Kathleen Chalfant and Eileen Atkins?
Now you're talking, AC! And, while I have you, here's hoping you enjoy your birthday celebration at the Marquis! I'll be center row k in less than two weeks btw.
I'd buy a full price ticket to see Chalfant and Atkins play checkers. But I'd much rather see Eileen as Cora to Kathleen's Arry in Morning's at Seven. Although each could no doubt ace any of Osborne's four sisters.
btw it's vile and heinous that Manville didn't get even an oscar nomination last year for Another Year.
next up: Katie Finneran and Gabriel Byrne
It's my second straight birthday I'll be spending with Bernadette! Last year, I got to see her on my actual birthday (August 22) in my favorite musical of all time, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (it was my fourth time seeing her and Stritch). This year it will be a week later, but I'll be seeing her in my second favorite musical--and, as I mentioned on the other thread, the first time I'm seeing a full production. Do let me know what you think when you see it next week!
btw it's vile and heinous that Manville didn't get even an oscar nomination last year for Another Year.
I couldn't agree more. She gave the best performance I saw all last year, in the best film of the year. Simultaneously endearing and annoying, hilarious and heartbreaking--not the kind of performance any actor can just give. I felt the same outrage when Sally Hawkins was snubbed for her astounding performance in Leigh's HAPPY-GO-LUCKY.
To the matter at hand: ten years ago I would have said Finneran as Chrissy and Byrne as Al in David Rabe's In the Boom Boom Room. Today, I'm going to say Mother Courage and The Cook in Mother Courage and Her Children.
Next two: Amy Morton and John Hawkes?
Hawkes as Shannon to Morton's Hannah (although she'd probably nail Maxine as well) in Night of the Iguana.
Karen Olivo and Lin-Manuel Miranda
Olivo as Titania and Miranda as Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
David Hyde Pierce and Christine Baranski
Pierce as Sidney and Baranski as Helga in Deathtrap
Jane Horrocks and Campbell Scott

If jane could ditch the british accent i could see her and scott doing a more comedic spin on the kennedys, very comedic in fact. With horrocks as jackie and scott as rfk.
Judy Davis and sherie rene scott?
Thanks for getting us up and running again, Random!
I've got four ideas:
Davis as June to Scott's Childie in Killing of Sister George.
Davis as Nancy to Scott's Sarah in Seascape.
Davis as Thelma to Scott's Jessie in 'night, Mother.
Davis as Toby to Scott's Evie - or maybe the other way around - in The Gingerbread Lady.
Maybe these could run in rep.

Game On, Random!
"L'amour, L'amour!"
A new musical version of The Women.
In much expanded roles:
Vicky as Nancy Blake (think Ann Sheridan's narrator version in The Opposite Sex)
Patti as Dolly Dupuyster
Bernadette as Mrs. Morehead
and starring
Kelli O'Hara as Mary
Orfeh as Crystal
Julia Murney as Sylvia
Katie Finneran as Edith
Jane Krakowski, Laura Benanti, Karen Olivo or Christina Hendricks as Miriam (I just can't decide)
Michelle Federer as Peggy
and (in boxes)
Christine Baranski as the Countess de Lave
Reba McEntire as Lucy

In all fairness henrik wouldn't hendricks, be more fun as crystal than miriam given as ,not to be unkind to orfeh, must be very attractive. Plus then you get the lovely tv star vs the musical star thing going on with her and o'hara.
I'm thinking (in a real casting switch up for this show but a fun one) Hawke as an old franklin shepard, and Norton as an older charlie. They'd have to have young counterparts but besides that...
I certainly thought of Christina as Crystal, Random, but I think Miriam would be a more interesting role for her, and also that Crystal might be a more interesting - if challenging - role for Orfeh. I might think Orfeh is hotter than you do perhaps but I also don't think Crystal has to be "attractive" in the stop traffic sense, just, with the help of theater magic, a mankiller, which I think Orfeh could pull off.
But I agree the musical comedy star versus tv star thing would resonate well with the rivalry dynamic in the play (taking this perhaps too far, Stephen then becomes per that paradigm loyal/disloyal ticket buying "audience")
I guess I fell for the idea of a knock down drag out cat fight between Murney and Hendricks as well.
Comparing Crystal to Miriam, I don't think Crawford was a particularly beautiful woman - on the other hand, Goddard (brilliant as the oriingal Miriam) was one of the most alluring women in the movies ever - and I like the idea of Hendricks as Miriam.
To me Orfeh is one of those women who can look amazing or very worn out. Although she might be too short for the role (I thought of Benanti as well but she seems like she might be too tall) she was the most interesting choice I could come up with it, although I have the feeling there must be a definitive choice who is eluding me. Scarlet Johansen maybe?
btw, I like the idea of Norton as Becket and Hawke as Henry II, which seems very ripe for revival IMO.
Your turn.

Yes but crawford had something orfeh dosn't youth. In short for this hendricks is the young sensual new girl at the macys counter. Orfeh is lucky to have the job at belks. though she could sing the **** out of the part allowing for some fun music where hendricks could not. ten years ago i could have bought it but hey, if they can make angela lansbury look sixy and bernadette fourty, who knows.... Orfeh could work.
Martha Plimpton and Megan Mullally, and if you really want a challenge benanti?
OK, you win, I'm wrong, I just thought she'd be the best bitch of them all to tell you the truth. Although, I can't understand how Benanti as Crystal could be a problem - agewise at least - when she only played Gypsy, and pretty damned well, 3 years ago.
not to mention, Orfeh is 44. Crawford was then 34.
By 1939 versus current and screen versus stage standards, I'd say it's a draw on the youth front.
But, in any event, as I said, I surrender.

Oh no benanti would be a fun crystal because frankly benanti as many people around here acknowledge looks much younger and can play younger and have people believe it without casting around to make her look that way (example of casting around while not as good an example, peters in annie get your gun.) And i agree orfeh would be a fun bitch, only trouble is finding the right piece.... By the way your thing about stephen you hit the nail on the head my friend. On the bitch train while not full on bitch after hearing her strongest suit she would have been a fun amneris.
