Definitely the best musical of the season (I have seen all of the nominated shows). Seeing Piazza again this Saturday. Can't wait!

I am in love with this show, and I haven't even seen it. The music is absolutely amazing.
This IS the best musical of the year. I'm hoping a miracle happens to let it win the top prize. Saw it for the second time today and it was even better than the first. "Fable" was exceptional today. Everything about this show is perfection. And, yes, I cried during and after "fable" and it escalated during the curtain calls. And as if seeing it wasn't enough, I listened to the ocr like three times.
i really have to see Piazza. ive yet to hear anything truly bad about it and i love matt morrison so its a win win eh? lol.
You can't possibly lose, scoundrel. And if you're a student, you really can't lose. Go see it now!
I saw it today. It's a wonderful show, and the music is absolutely beautiful. I had a few slight issues with the story, but I wouldn't mind if it won best musical (although I don't think it will).
I have to admit I don't like Sunday in the Park With George's music much either. And it's almost entirely because of the synthesizers. I'm a classical purist, and that's part of why I LOVE Piazza. It's just so old fashioned and romantic and beautiful. If it won Best Musical, I would be absolutely thrilled, but I would also be flabbergasted.
Jeez
If only we were all voting
PIAZZA would win hands down!
Why is there so much political stuff and not enough
"I am voting for the BEST Musical"
I know: the almighty Dollar
Well let's send out good vibes to
all things PIAZZA
Was Passion the last "artsy" musical to win the top prize?
If so, it's a shame. It's been too long.
I'm seeing Piazza again next Wednesday. Bringing the mother and the brother. I can't wait!

Are you saying you would like it better if it were re-orchestrated or played on the piano? It sounds like you have orchestration issues, which are different than score issues.
the voice in the overture
is that Clark or O'Hara
no credit on the CD
Whatever, the synth fits. And it's not like the entire show is done on synthesizer. There is none in the first act if I recall. I think the show is utterly beautiful.
That's Kelli O'Hara in the Overture.

Not to mention, the synthesizer issue is more one having to do with the cast album and/or the OBC production (if you saw it live) than one with what Sondheim/Lapine actually wrote and created. It's not fair to discount the entire show because you didn't like how ONE production (albeit the original Broadway production) was orchestrated.
I personally would not call Passion ARTSy..define please. but remember Piazza could be a suprise..last year Ave Q was. which i personally found to be dreadful..but thats my opinion as i know everyone else loves it.
so crox your fingers...for lots of "lights" on Tony Night.
(OT) Margo- I know it's not very fair, but the only way I've experienced SITPWG is through the original production's CD and DVD. I'm not discounting the entire show (I said the music in my original post). It is mostly an orchestration issue, and I wouldn't be surprised if I liked it a lot more without the synths. But I haven't had the opportunity to find out. I would be very open to going to a good production of it to find out (doesn't seem like it's produced very often, though). I think it's a tremendously interesting show that I would like on stage, but just listening to it just doesn't work for me.
So....Piazza....I'm curious why they picked Statues and Stories for the Tonys. I guess because it features both Margaret and Clara, which makes sense, but it's kind of exposition-y. I'm not sure what a better choice would have been, though.
I want
<---Best Supporting, I think.
I also think Matt deserves it too.
Well, Matt Morrison will also be singing "Passegiatta" at the Tonys, so that way all three nominated actors will get a chance to sing. I think "Statues and Stories" will be just fine. Of course, I would love to see any one of the ladies' solo numbers, but it wouldn't transfer too well on TV. The opening number is quite exciting, so maybe that's what they're going for.

come on shir..dont yell.everyone is entitled to what they like hon. the score strikes different chords for everyone..if everyone liked the same thing then every theater might be running..phantom ..think of that
i think you are right they chose the number to feature the leads but i think to entice the audience with the story..
I'm hoping for Piazza upsets in the musical and supporting actor and actress categories. While Clark was good and deserving of the Tony, it was actually Morrison and O'Hara who blew me away. It is my favorite musical of the year.
Also..I'll cry if Piazza does not take lighting and set design awards.

It's interesting that many people don't realize how subtle and nuanced Clarks performance is. The things she goes through and deals with and how she deals with them are why she is said to get the performance of the year. I loved Kelli and was taken by her performance. Matt, not so much. I didn't think he was bad, he was ok. I think Tony nom worthy, not win. His acting was good enough, but his singing was not. He doesn't have the range for the show really. And I don't know how anyone worth their salt could possibly write an article saying that he should be singing opera.
agreed..the nuance's and the strikingly painful moments she goes throught are enormous and she plays everyone of them with total committment.
