haha yes it does
So the Phantom is in drag? GASP! Or wearing FUBU? PIMP!!!!
But, yeah! It is going to take every ounce of energy I have not to bust out in song. But, you better believe I will be crying at the end and giving it a standing ovation at the end.
"Also, people think that others will notice that his voice isn't up to par with other Phantoms, but you have to think that a lot of the people that will see this movie, have never seen the musical and will have no prior knowledge of past Phantoms to compare Gerard and Emmy too. I think we are so used to what is on the stage and other singers that have portrayed these characters, that we refuse to accept people who would not work on the stage. Does that make sense? "
Yes, spider, that does make sense. There are people out there who have never seen any version of the show, touring cast or otherwise. Likewise, they may have never heard the OLCR. For some the Phantom they remember best may be the Lon Chaney or Claude Rains versions.
As for people who HAVE heard the original cast and others after that... you may be right in some cases. I am one who saw MC and SB on Broadway. I've also seen six other Phantoms in productions in Vienna Austria, London (twice) New York, and Washington DC. I never heard a "bad" Phantom. Some I liked more than others -- the last Phantom I saw was Matthew Cammelle in London, and he was Excellent. However, I kept an open mind about the film Phantom, especially when I heard his singing experience was somewhat limited. When I finally heard the highlights I was very pleasantly surprised, and liked what I heard of Gerard Butler's singing. There is room for improvement, but the basics are there, and I think he handles the singing very well.
"that's true kec, sometimes the best teacher isn't always the best singer.
keeping that in mind the darker sounding Phantom makes more sense with the tone. he's a tortured soul, who's gone through much pain in his life.
a new approach was needed, it's been nearly twenty years since the show was originally produced. change is good sometimes. that said, i can't wait to see this on the big screen"
Exactly, Marquise. A new approach was definitely needed. I also am anxiously awaiting the coming of this film. The next 14 days won't go by fast enough!

Yeah, I'm bumping this thread - the search engine is my friend! (But try typing "Phantom soundtrack" into the Subject search and see how many pages you have to wade through!)
Okay, don't judge, but this is my first time listening to the s-s-soundtrack. I haven't had time. Quick thoughts - I'm on track 6 of the 2CD edition - so it's the title song.
Immediate reaction when I heard Gerard - I honestly made a bit of a noise that cats make when being strangled. Ggssyyyeeegg. I REALLY wanted to like him, but my god! Is he the phantom of the opera or phantom of light 80s rock??
Really liking Emmy so far. The one thing I actually didn't like about the musical was that the Christines were too vibrato, too operatic (yeah, they're opera singers, but it's just my personal taste). Here, Emmy SOUNDS like a young talent chorus girl, and I think it suits her part well.
Patrick's alright so far.
Still cringing over Gerard's part in the title song. PLEASE tell me it gets better. I really want to like him.
I don't know if I like the dialogue parts on the CD. I'm glad I have it for posterity, but it sort of ruins the flow for me, if that makes any sense.
Oh yeah, anyone else notice Patrick and Emmy's modern American accents? What gives?
ETA: Okay, just finished listening to I Remember/... ...Not feeling Gerard's growl when Christine takes off his mask. Didn't anyone tell him to spit his phlegm out BEFORE the take? *sigh* I still really want to like him.

..but the thing is that Christine isn't supposed to sound like a "young talent chorus girl" She's supposed to sound like a girl with a phenomenal singing voice that is enough of a threat to Carlotta.
